Down In Front and Tallboys - what do you do, melee'ers?

As a tank that is working through levels with friendly fire, Down In Front is a requirement these days. As a tank, when specials like Tallboys appear, it's my job to hold their attention while everyone else shoots the fuck out of them.

But some days, things go sideways. I'm talking multiple crushers entering a doorway I'm holding simultaneously, stuff like that.

So when do you decide to stand up? Friendly fire hurts, but it hurts less than a direct hit from some ridden. Is it worth it to take a few pings to reach that glorious arm socket or face?

Ibis Ripley / Tallboy / Blur Tr

Here starts a more legitimate search for my new rig. I own a 2019 SC Carbon Chameleon and LOVE that thing. My aim is to get a rig that can handle ALL of my Pittsburgh riding when I want to push the pace over super rooty and chattery rides which my hardtail doesn’t handle quite as well. I am also 235 lbs and look forward to the squishier experience of a full-sus again.

My considerations are the Tallboy, Ibis Ripley, and the recently found Blur Tr. I want a bike that is distinct enough from the Chameleon, but which can still climb well while able to handle gnarly stuff. The new β€œdowncountry” category resonates. I care most about fitness and getting faster.

Are TallBoys A Scam? Honest Question!

If two 4% 12 oz beers are equal to one 8% 24oz and therefore a 5% 12oz white claw and a 5% 24oz whiteclaw is equal then anytime we buy a tall boy or bigger can then its just useless liquid with same abv.

The research stated that one friend could drink two 4% beers at 12oz cans and the other friend drank one 8% 24oz beer both would have essentially the same alcohol content in their bodies. Therefore the 24oz tall boy drinker if he cares at all would save money and enjoy more ABV for the buck or whatever by enjoying a single 12oz can since there is no change.

Some are saying this is a troll or something but its not. Ive just been getting tall boys my whole life and ppl sometimes do as well and it turns out it may be just a facade. And smart marketing to where we think we are getting like two beers in one with a tall boy but it isnt true. This post was just me asking for answers and figuring out if maybe the scientists were mistaken or tall boy drinkers are truly getting jipped out of our beer lol

Is it too late to redeem 18-19 Parkhurst Tallboy Puzzles?

I apologize if this is a dumb question as I am relatively new to the e-pack game. I've been buying some 18-19 Parkhurst for giggles lately and have completed a few of the Tallboy puzzles. I think if they removed the Tallboy's ability to shuffle halfway across the map at light speed he wouldn't be as annoying to fight

Just really what the title says.

The fact that once he's shot he functionally teleports to the nearest player's location, and then slows down once he's there, feels like a cheap mechanic.

I'd be perfectly fine if they removed that ability from the game and amped up his health to compensate.

I think tallboys could be balanced by increasing their weakspot damage multiplier

Before we start, this is for nightmare - all mutations are manageable on veteran and recruit (although the 6-10 that spawn with a horde and spawning right behind you is kinda whack)

I think it's fair that tallboy family shouldn't be stumbled to death and they should serve as a tanky wrecking ball that punishes players who aren't hitting the weakspot. The stumble nerfs (to us) and buffs (to them) are entirely fair imo.

The damage they do is fair, the health they have is fair, but the resource sink into killing them seems unfair, especially on early levels where we're even weaker.

BUT, if players are able to accurately hit tallboy family weakspots, you shouldn't have to unload multiple mags into the weakspot to kill it. It's normally hard enough to hit a charging one. Also the devs stated they want it to be a team effort to kill it - in this case it would be as you'd need someone to pull aggro and the rest shoot the weakspot.

I think reeker family and stinger family have fine weakspot breakpoints, but tallboy family should definitely be in line with it. It makes sense that they should be beefy as fuck to disrupt uncoordinated teams. It doesn't make sense to do everything right and still be punished. If it's just one tallboy variant, it's not really an issue but if it's several, then it becomes very hard.

Obviously the increased spawning is an issue and them spawning 10 meters behind you is also an issue but once that's fleshed out, they're still pretty OP in the early levels and just two can end your nightmare run in the early stages.

It feels like a fine line of balance if we're able to deal massive damage to them and they can deal massive damage to us. I'll take chaos warriors from vermintide 2 as an example - they can straight up one shot you if you don't dodge and you can't block their one shot mechanic (the overhead swing) BUT you can also one shot them with the right weapons. They can also only be dealt damage in the head unless you have armor piercing, it feels quite rewarding to be able to one shot them in that case, especially if multiple spawn. Obviously tallboy variants don't need to be one shotting us and we don't need to be one shotting them, but still, a weakspot buff seems to be the answer to some sort of balance.

Help Fighting Tallboys/Crushers/Bruisers as melee

Question’s in the title. I main melee and have been trying the axe build to be a tall boy delete button. Are there any tips for how to fight them without getting grabbed or hit? I seem to always take a hit on approach no mater what I have tried.

Edit: Lots of responses i’ll tldr some of the puts for anyone finding this.

Crushers Run to their right side (So go left of them as you face them) to try to dodge the grab with a sprint.

Turn and run at a 90 to them, or sprint directly away to try to bait out their charge and hit them after they miss (maybe listen for an audio que)

Mean drunk probably not advisable, sprinting is too important for fighting a tall boy in the open it seems.

Devs, please change the color of the β€œreticle” for tallboy characters.

The giant circle where the tallboy throws the attack is green. And also the grass is green. This often makes it extremely difficult to see where that hit is going to land. Brighten up the color, change the color, or PLEASE make it a little more obvious. Whiffing a tallboy attack can sometimes be the difference of life or death as a ridden.

Stumble seems off for Tallboys/Crushers/Bruisers

I made a similar post about this recently but decided to try and showcase this in a video this time so here goes. Please let me know if I'm missing something here - but I don't think it should take 15 rapid swings with a green bat to free a teammate from a crusher? And this is with Heavy Hitter equipped. I mean sure the card was bugged before but it seems redundant now.

We're also running +80% melee damage in the clip. I've replicated this twice now against crushers as they're the easiest to hit this much. Tallboys and Bruisers are a bit trickier to showcase but seem to be a similar story. For Tallboys I managed to stumble one after 9 weak spot hits + 3 body shots with the same cards (can share that clip as well if anyone wants). The effect of this is that you as a melee went from being a counter to these special infected to now them being a counter to you.

My gut tells me there's something here that isn't working quite as intended. I've read people saying that if you make the calculation that it should take somewhere around 3 swings now and that this is fine as perma-stunning Tallboys the way it was pre-patch wasn't how it was intended. If this was the case then fair enough, but if you jump into a nightmare game and try to stun the Tallboys/Bruisers/Crushers it just doesn't seem to be working as it should.

It may very well be that this is not only tied to melee. Perhaps the Crusher/Tallboy/Bruiser variations of special infected are just a bit bugged all together when it comes to stumble at the moment. It just becomes particularly noticeable as a melee character who used to have the job of stunning these enemies.

I also get that it may seem that melee players have been overreacting if you only read the patch notes, but this together with the recently fixed trauma damage bug is what really has made playing as melee in Nightmare a vastly different experience after the patch - never mind the nerfs to some of the cards. Those all seem rather OK to me.

If TRS just tweak the stumble here along with fixing the specials spawning issue I'll be a happy fish again! :)

Tallboy balancing idea

A post I saw talked about the lack of weakness for the Bruser, in comparison to the other mutants. Such as when it's coming right at you in a corridor. Its damn hard to not take a few good hits before mag dumping on it long enough to bring it down; Most of the time, without having a good shot at the weak point. A solution to this that popped in my head, though I feel like might be a bit impractical, would be to include a smaller weak point on one of the knee of the brusers to get the chance to stumble it instead of just having to eat the first hit when it gets a running start.

Tallboys need a Nerf

I'm sure their spawnrates are probably in line with the rest of the mutations, but they are SO HARD TO KILL.
according to https://statty.net , they have about twice as much health as reekers (sure, they are suicide bombers, but my point still stands), while being 2.5 to 6 times harder to stumble, having a smaller hitbox, and a smaller weak spot(when at the arm) that moves around more and gets protected to the player being rushed
On the offensive side, They either do area damage or make a DISABLING GRAB, they walk as fast as a player can run and rush even faster.

While other mutations can be dealt with by a single player unloading a magazine, or stunlocking them with a shotgun, players get accustomed to abandon everything they are doing to focus fire on what is basically the Miniboss of the game, many times having to spend consumables when a single tallboy shows accompanied. God forbid if the Game Director rolls a 20 on his dice and spawns 3 tallboys around the corner, that is usually a death sentence on a party that doesnt use have 2 grenades at the ready.
By the visual design, i think that tallboys are supposed to be a fast damage dealer, but they also take the role of tank, dodge tank and disabler.
Like i'm fine with how difficult the game is, but i'm tired of only worrying about this kind of infected, i think they overshadow the others. To the point of always thinking about putting something in my build that counters tallboys.

Tallboy sizing advice

Hello all, I have the option to buy a new Tallboy (for a discounted price also) but in the XL size.

I am 179 cm, so based on the chart I am an β€œL” size. XL starts at 185 cm.

Does anyone have an experience with the sizing? Is it too much of a difference and I should get an another bike, or is it doable?

Mutations are big walking bullet sponges, but Tallboy and Crusher are just OP as hell

Those motherfuckers can survive 4 full rifle clips of damage and still keep on going after us. In fact, Crusher is able to withstand 16 shells of direct hits into weakspot with +50% weakspot damage.

Bug that annoys the heck out of me but isn't being mentioned as much - Tallboys zipping across maps

I can't tell you how many times my team has spotted a Tallboy way across the map, we've begun shooting it thinking we have plenty of time to kill it before it reaches us, only to have its animation freeze while it glides along the map at 100 miles per hour and reaches us before we can dump the requisite 1,000 bullets into it. It's not fun, it just seems extremely glitched.

I don't know what exactly they "fixed" in this patch, but they certainly didn't fix this.

Can anyone stumble Tallboy variants on Veteran anymore?

Reekers and Stinger variants are plenty easy to stumble of course, but Tallboy variants always just die first. If a Crusher grabs one of us and the other 3 of us are unloading on it, it always dies before it lets go. I even tried blasting it with my shotgun build swapping between a blue Tac14 and a blue Belgian, both with blue stumble bullets on. Just wondering why they bother with the stumble health with them if it never happens. On Veteran.

Need help choosing between YT Izzo Core 2 & Santa Cruz Tallboy.

Local shop: supports Santa Cruz. YT is Direct-To-Consumer so not sure on support. But I'm moving in 6 months or so and no idea what the new area will support but since SC is more popular I'd say thats more likely what shops are familiar with.

Riding Style: Mix of aggressive XC and standard trail. Not much climbing where I'm at now but where I'm moving in 1 year there will be lots of climbing required. Descending I hit small features nothing too crazy but smallish jumps. I prefer to ride on the conservative side while still pushing myself as to not get hurt - downhill stability and control is important because of that so it doesn't have to be enduro fast.

Honestly I see a lot of love for the Tallboy - and see more recent love for the YT Izzo - but I have no idea what their customer service is like. Can't test the Izzo but the videos online seems like it's a bike right up my alley - but if owning it will be a pain due to bad customer service or difficulty finding parts I would opt for the Tallboy...though the 4lb difference is tempting me for the Izzo... Both of the models I'm looking at are same price range at $3300 ish
