I'm nearing late game fights and I'm really struggling in pretty much every encounter. My party comp is Flik with lightning and fire rune, viktor with killer and earth rune, george, rina with blue gate, rage and nymph rune and eilie with cyclone and earth rune. Rina seems to be the only one actually dealing good damage while everyone else is hitting for 150-200 range. It's pretty hard to fight some of these bosses and I'm wondering what's a better setup I can get going
I feel like Suikoden III isn't talked about very much. It isn't viewed as negatively as S4, but that almost makes it more obscure -- S4 has more name recognition as the "worst" entry. I don't think I've ever seen anyone name S3 as their favorite Suikoden. Most people would go with S2, and those who think that S2 is overrated would probably go with S1. (EDIT: Or maybe S5.)
My personal favorite (and one of my all-time favorite games) is also S2. For a long time, I didn't play S3 since it sounded like an unsuccessful effort to recreate the Suikoden magic in 3D. But after finally going through it, I came to appreciate it, particularly the way in which I felt that it distinguished itself from its predecessors while still exploring Suikoden themes. That is what I'd like to talk about here.
Every Suikoden game is about war, but I feel that each of the first three games finds its own distinct angle from which to examine war and conflict:
The first Suikoden looks at war through the lens of loyalty. All of the central relationships in this game are between lords and vassals, or leaders and followers if you prefer. The central question of the game is whether, and when, it is justified for a follower to 'betray' the leader. Different lord/vassal pairs answer this question in different ways. Tir, obviously, chooses to turn his back on his father as well as Barbarossa (perhaps with good reason, but still, that is what he does). But Teo chooses to remain loyal until the bitter end -- and so does Gremio, ironically, considering how his own master reneged on his loyalty. Even a relatively minor side character like Pahn struggles with loyalty, being torn between Teo and Tir.
The second Suikoden focuses on leadership and particularly the role of choice in it. Some people (Luca Blight) are just evil by nature. But >!Jowy!< isn't evil -- he feels sincere compassion for the people who have suffered, and wants to end the war more than anything. But he believes that the war can only be ended through the means he has chosen, and by committing to those means he does more and more evil, until finally he has just as much blood on his hands as the people he hated. On the other hand, >!Riou!< isn't some kind of brilliant leader by nature -- he is just a kind, thoughtful boy who always tried to protect the people around him, and as a result, people were drawn to him and eventually made him into the inspirational figure that they wanted and needed. Likew
Itβs not really a love team but how I wish Kasumi and Tir would end up together. Imagine their child born and raised as a ninja while bearing the Soul Eater Rune. So much power.
It's not a bad game by any stretch. For me it feels a little off brand, though. Like, Konami had another property kicking around they didn't know what to do with, so they had it repurposed. I've never finished it, either.
I guess what I'm saying is that it just doesn't quite feel like Suikoden. Says me, at least. Your mileage might vary.
Still better than 4. I feel so bad for 4. 4 tries so hard.
Opinions?
About to go fight the Beast Rune
Is it worth the money to get PS3 just to play suikoden 1-5?
Hello, fellow Suikoden fans. As you all know, legend Dan Crenshaw has provided the ideal order in which to the chapters, as follows:
Hugo 1
Chris 1
Geddoe 1
Chris 2
Hugo 2
Geddoe 2
Geddoe 3
Hugo 3
Chris 3
Thomas 1
Thomas 2
Chapter 4
Chapter 5
My question is, will I miss anything if I do Geddoe's 2-3 after Geddoe 1 and before Chris and Hugo's Chapter 2's? I figured it wouldn't matter since Geddoe's story gets completely disconnected from the other two after Karaya Village, but I wanted to make sure just in case. Thanks and have a good day.
Will I ever be able to not include nanami in my party? she's starting to annoy me... she always forces her way into my party and she's always the first one to complain when things get complicated
I started playing today and I find it kind of intimidating already.
New Battle system that uses pairs (and not quite direct control) where order matters instead of system from 1 and 2
And then the skill system where not only are they equipables, they can be leveled up as well

Just looking at all this has me feeling a little overwhelmed and intimidated
Did anyone else feel this way when they first played the game? It seems like a lot of customization, but its all thrown at you at once.
Hi all, I've just finished my latest run of Suikoden 1 & 2 and now about to continue with Suikoden 3. One of the missing aspect about this game is I think they never released any canon name for the Flame Champion. Back when I was a kid I used "Hero" as his name. Now I would like to know what do you think is a good lore friendly name for him?
Bonus question: does anyone have a PCSX2 save file that contains Suikoden 2 data?

Huge fan of 1+2, only played through 3 once on emulator. Tried to emulate 5 a bunch of times, but didn't run too well. Finally my father in law has gifted me his old ps2 and it runs nicely. Gonna start a playthrough tonight.
Fantastic game. I'll try to keep things brief for each aspect of the game, but I could write a book about it. I played Suikoden 1 as well, and currently about to go into 3, but 2 really shined brightly for me.
COMBAT: Loved it. Loved the front row and back row system and how each character had a weapon that was either short, mid, or long ranged, offered a lot of variety in combat. I thought the magic system was unique and I enjoyed that too where you have a certain number of times you can cast certain levels of spells. I also really liked how snappy things were when 2 party members targeted different enemies. I will say I disliked how mages typically had short ranged weapons, but since they were mages you'd typically want them in the back, right? I guess it makes sense, but you'd be missing a member to attack during random battles and trying to conserve your MP when auto-ing through them. Luc has an attack spell that I could use as often as I want, but since "auto" makes everyone just normal attack, he doesn't use it if I select auto. It'd been cool in that sense to let people select what "auto" does for each party member in a menu option somewhere. I personally liked how they did equipment and items in 1 better (except for the party item bag, fantastic addition), but how they did it here works. I especially love how you just sharpen a weapon instead of buying a new one. Eliminates the hassle of "oh did I already give them the best weapon? What weapon do they have on?"
TACTICAL COMBAT: I'll be honest, I hated it. I felt like it was a lot of RNG (randomness) and the ATK and DEF stats of the units didn't actually matter. Maybe I was missing something? I dunno. I just felt like there were a lot of times a unit should not have done well, and other times I feel like they should have done well. Like if I had an ATK stat of 11, and my target has a DEF of 4, why did I lose people or have a stalemate? I did like that you could leave things to Apple which really helped a lot in beginnings of battles as tactical bouts usually start off slow. I also hated the permadeath and it didn't make any sense. If a character dies in a regular battle, they can come back, but a tactical one? Nope, they die completely unless they have plot armor like Flik or Viktor. I really felt shafted and lost 2 people cause I suck at tactical games.
STORY: Amazing. Make this into a fictional war novel and it'd sell like hotcakes for Sunday morning brunch. Full of friendship and betrayal. Luc
... keep reading on reddit β‘I wanna do a speedrun for suikoden 2, partially to get the clive events and partially cause I just wanna see how I'd compare to some of the other speedruns. I am doing all 108 stars without glitches. I usually use double beats and fury runes, since you can't really get those on a normal run since they both are locked behind grinding.
I basically want some tips on characters to use and stuff like that since every party I've had so far has kind been dumbly thrown together if I'm honest, but since I brute forced it. I was okay
Tldr ; Speedrunning tips for suikoden 2 please
So I digitally bought 4 on my PS3 through PSN and beat it. I physically own Tactics.
I have a USB PS2 memory card adaptor (which I used to transfer data from my digital versions of Suikoden 1 and 2 so I can play it on Suikoden 3)
The problem is that the Suikoden 4 PSN version seems to place all their saves in a folder called Saved Data Utility (PS2) rather than the Memory Card Utility folder.
So as far as I know, I can't touch that saved data.
So my question is, does anyone know if I can transfer my data?
And if not, as someone who wants to 100% Suikoden Tactics, are my only options to download a save online that has the Cleared Data and 108 stars?
If so, does Tactics make any mention of the unique army name and ship name I chose in 4? Or is it just the hero's name from 4 that'll be mentioned?
Hey everybody,
Iβm looking for anyone looking/willing to sell their Suikoden 5? I know itβs a cult classic and donβt blame anyone for hoarding theirs. Been watching gameplays and craving to play it myself. Beat 1 - 4 multiple times so want a new twist of this amazing franchise. Thanks everybody.
Sorry for a bit long title & I will admit it that I fell in love with Suikoden series thanks to Suikoden tactics & yes 3 of my favorite games is & still is final fantasy tactics,Suikoden tactics & Record of agarest war.
& sooner or later I want to get even more into Suikoden series & see if I love any of them or not if that makes sense & Suikoden tactics was asking me if I ever do want to transfer data so I had to ask from your opinions & from your experiences thanks.
& to end it here or at least for now no I'm not seeking approvals & I'm mainly asking ahead of time from both veteran Suikoden fans & new fans like me if I should hold off suikoden tactics & play other suikoden games 1st or not since suikoden tactics is my very 1st suikoden game & suikoden tactics is my only suikoden game so far & so far at the moment?
Any thoughts on having a Suikoden game for mobile devices similar to Fire Emblem Heroes, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and others? I think, if done right, it could be an awesome venture if given a good story and proper narrative.
Title. I had it in my backlog since a while ago due to seeing it here several times as one of the greats.
I finished yesterday, and while it was a good game, I wouldn't rank it on my personal top. The battle system was nice, I had never seen a game that integrated 108 playable characters, and the story is nice as well. But at the same time, nothing was "surprising" or out of the norm. I tend to put lots of weight on the story for my rankings, but still.
It wasn't a bad game by any means, and I'm glad I played it. I ranked it 8/10 (based on my personal scale, where 8 is my average). So yeah, good, not amazing.
I'm now curious to know why others recommend it so much so I'm able to have another perspective now. Many thanks! :)
Next I'm waiting for Ys IX on Switch, and in the meantime I'm thinking of replaying Zelda BotW or Skyrim, which is surprising coming from me as I hate replays. :D Haven't decided yet.
I'm wondering if I missed a cutscene by mistake at the end. Seemingly the story was heading towards confrontation with Jowy. I saw a cutscene where he bid farewell to Pilika and Jillia, and that's the last I saw of him. Then I met Leon Silverburg and confronted a beast rune monster. Then the castle fell down and the game ended with my victory. My new empire is called Gremio. I'm sure Tir was surprised, but not as much as I was when he vanished from my team.
My thoughts on the game.
This series (which I've played only two games of so far) has a penchant for including conveniences other RPGs offer and making them inconvenient to access. Fast travel, but the person that has teleport can't use it when she's on my party. Map, but it doesn't show any place names and you can't look at it in its entirety outside of a library. Party switching needs to be done from an NPC. You can access out of party character inventories, but only from another NPC. At least you can run at will this time.
The game has many characters, but I rarely use too many of them because the most plot relevant ones are often forced in at important events so they need to be kept equipped and sharpened, and in the case of Viktor, groomed. To make matters worse those tend to be short ranged characters. This is something I hope they stop doing if I ever play the third game.
The story is very compelling. Seeing the beginnings of Jowy, Riou, and Nanami at the start of the game, and this family broken apart as they are pulled to different sides of a conflict due to ideological conflicts that are both responses to their betrayal by Highland. In theory. Because that story is so sporadic that it was one scene every twenty hours of gameplay for me. It doesn't take up much of the game.
Jowy has his own view of how to improve the world and what can be sacrificed in the way. However the other side of that conflict is Nanami screaming about how we should all be friends and Riou is silent. When I can choose his dialogue options, it is often between ellipses and something to the effect of "because I must". He has no agency in this story, only doing what other people tell him to. All choices are either delay or compliance. He also has no compelling answer to anything Jowy says. This is a very one-sided, three person conflict. In the end Riou is chosen leader of a new nation that's even bigger than Highland had been. This is exactly what Jowy was fighting for. Why were we fighting?
Luca Blight was a forgett
... keep reading on reddit β‘Hey folks, while I've been putting together these Suikoden miniatures it has occurred to me that a fair number of people here might be interested in trying out a game or having a couple of Suikoden minis for display, not everyone has the time/money/interest in building out multiple armies.
To that end, if I were to work with some folks in the community to put together paper miniatures using in game/game inspired Suikoden sprites; including them with the free rules along with instructions on how to print them and mount them to bases... would that interest you?
For those unfamiliar with paper/flat miniatures, here's an example of some very good quality ones from a company called "Wofun":

Well, here we are, Suikoden 2.
First of all glad you guys enjoyed these posts from my Suikoden 1 entries. That game was extremely short and there were only 3 posts so this game there will be more.
Prefacing this to say my mental health hasnβt been great lately so hopefully that doesnβt influence my opinion of Suikoden 2. I have very high expectations of this game, many even saying itβs the best JRPG and things of that nature. We will have to see.
Also, my first day was quite short.
With that being said, letβs begin
Story:
Well, we have a pretty gripping story early on. First of all huge upgrade in presentation quality. Opening cinematic is awesome! Main takeaway from the opening cinematic is βthis guy looks like a dickβ. I went with Riou as the name, because I canβt stand self inserting me into the game. Had to look up his name
I remember the city state being mentioned in Suikoden 1 briefly, but not much about them. Seems like they are up to no good here?
HOLY CRAP VIKTOR? AND FLIK? They arenβt dead... how perplexing? Needless to say I am happy to see them, given how Viktor was my favorite from S1. But is this story before or after Suikoden 1? Right now it looks like after because Viktor mentions heβs getting old. But still, what in the world has happened to this world? Viktor and Flik seem to have found some kind of mercenary army or something to that degree. Thereβs some kind of conspiracy going on with the city state. What happened to Leopart and the new empire? Who is this Luca dickhead guy? Children army too? This game is already starting off as a much more mature game then S1.
I enjoyed the little tutorial section, the place is pretty cozy. Side note, not a fan of the pretty lady having some super perverted dialogue βooooh come back in a couple yearsβ or whatever. Little cringe, anyways moving on.
So surprise viktor and Flik are cool guys and let me and my childhood friend who I still canβt remember the name of kinda just chill. Despite their generosity, we still escape.
So far the story is a little all over the place. Now we team up with these traveling performers. One of them uses their βmagicβ well call it to help us get past the guards. We make it to our home town of βRyoubuβ (name sounds familiar). Surprise, we are criminals so everyone hates us. We reunite with a very pleasant young lady who I already forget the name of but sheβs full of character and is our sister I believe. But, sadly all 3 of us get captu
Good morning everyone. Iβm writing this as I just woke up and again on my phone so thereβs going to be some typos so just bare with me π
Day 2 I logged in another 5-6 hours I want to say. I will preface Day 2 by saying that I enjoyed the first part of my playthrough more than I did today and Iβll explain why, but I am still enjoying the game.
First of all, how bout them character designs?! I mentioned it in my day 1 post, but there are some great designs here. I feel like a lot of my playthrough today was spent recruiting characters which Iβm not sure how to feel about. Iβll be honest a lot of these characters have some really specific and kinda vague ways to recruit them. I had to look up a guide sadly on how to recruit the antique guy, as well as the chef. With the chef I mean cmon, why lock it behind dialogue?
Now a character I recruited today that I really enjoy is Mina. Mina doesnβt seem all that great, but she throws a mean left hook. Feel free to correct me if sheβs good, but eh sheβs cute :)
Story Progression - I made it to the point where I got a jet boat after freeing the medicine man. Now my grievances with this part of the game is that it was EXTREMELY unclear what I had to do to progress the story. There was a scene where our army got our asses kicked and then they mentioned finding a way to beat the poison, but as far as I could tell after that it was fair game. I spent hours walking around the different towns like Antei Rikon and Teien and just couldnβt figure it out. Sadly, I had to use a guide. Because of this it felt like the plot has kinda slowed to a crawl after building the base camp, because it feels like so much of it is spent loitering around recruiting people.
the rapids - I donβt need to explain why I couldnβt figure this part out right? I had encountered the βmaelstromβ or whatever but not the rapids so I couldnβt progress this part.
Character deaths - There were two deaths in todayβs playthrough. One was Gregios , the other was Pahn. Gregios death the after math was pretty emotional, but Iβm not really a fan of the scenario in which he died. It was also heavily foreshadowed, with Gregio reflecting on how Tir didnβt really need him anymore. Now Pahn I am now aware that I could have avoided. I havenβt really been using Pahn, but he got his shit kicked in by Teo. It wasnβt even close, the guy got one shot. I have since found out you can actually win that fight, but if Iβm being honest I kinda feel it is mo

Well, here it is. Day 3 of my blind Suikoden playthrough and apparently the final one. Iβll be honest, I didnβt expect this game to be THAT short, I believe my final playtime clocked in at 18 hours or so. Iβll give my thoughts on what happened during this play session, as well as the game as a whole in this part. As usual fair warning there will be typos as Iβm on my iPhone.
Story:
The story today started off with assaulting Teo after we retrieved the fire rods that Odessa had left us. I enjoyed the little flamethrower animations they threw in on the battle screen. Teo was easily crushed, and then Tir and him had a duel to the death. Now, I will say that while I think this scenario was a very strong setup, I think it was ultimately let down by the fact that Tir is a silent protagonist. Getting a bit ahead of myself here, but a lot of my complains with Suikoden 1βs story can be traced back to Tir being silent. I also was curious as to if Teo was under the control of a dark rune, because he seemed to be acting irrational. He wasnβt though, which I found odd as most of the other generals were under the control of one. Regardless a pretty good scene, Tir has now lost pretty much everyone except Cleo at this point.
Then.... Vampires!?! Donβt get me wrong I love Part 1 and all but whereβd this come from π? I digress, I actually enjoyed the random vampire section. It kinda reminds me that this is in fact a fantasy world, and it kinda of reminds me of something that youβd see in a classic FF or castlevania game. We learn a little bit about the history of the world here, and it was actually pretty sad seeing young Ted. Again, I would have resonated more with these scenes if I had known more about Ted and Tirs relationship, but it is still sad seeing Ted off on his 300 year journey. We also learn about Viktors past, but I honestly wish we had gotten to see his home town or a flashback or something. Just hearing Viktor say βI had to watch my family eat themselvesβ felt a bit.. grotesque but also awkward to me.
Creepy Wife stealing vampire guy is slayed by the talking sword. Youβll have to forgive me if I got the sequences out of order btw Iβm going off just memory but I believe the next part was the fetch quest for the dragons den. There was a glimpse of the king, and he lets Futch go? Puzzling, I thought he was supposed to be a colossal dickhead? Hmmmmm....
Then itβs the final stretch pretty much, there was a couple of epic battles, we recruited
... keep reading on reddit β‘I just wanna give major props to anyone who was able to win Pahnβs duel vs Teo in only a few tries. Iβve been grinding for about 4 hours and Iβm still losing the fight but barely. This is easily one of the hardest fights Iβve had to do in a JRPG in a while.
Hello all, first time playing through the Suikoden series as I have heard many good things regarding the series. I started with the first Suikoden and it is of my favorite games I have played in Quarantine. I was really excited to start up Suikoden 2, right after the first one. However, I am on chapter 6 right after Kiba and Klaus are recruited and I just cannot get into it. So far, the only characters I actually care about even a little bit is MC, the returning Suikoden 1 characters, and maybe Nanami and Jowy. Everyone that I have met so far just does not seem very developed or worthy of any plot significance. In Suikoden 1 I really cared for Pahn, Cleo, Camille, MC, Gremio, Ted, Milia, and everyone else. They all seemed fleshed out and developed. Also, the turn based combat minigame that replaced the RPS system is just not fun playing and that is coming from a huge FFT and FE fan. The story also has not hooked me in anyway yet and Luca seems to be a very badly written character so far. Does it get better. I loved the first game, but this game is making me reconsider continuing playing the series. Is there a specific spot in the story I can skip to where it really gets going? Thanks for everyone's help.
You guys were very supportive of my post asking whatβs the best way to play these games. I can tell by the amount of support and eagerness the community showed about having a new member that these games are quite beloved. So needless to say I am going into this series with pretty high expectations.
I think itβd be fun if I just said some of my thoughts about the game as I go along. So this will be my day 1 entry.
I played the game for about 4 hours yesterday and have a lot of positive things to say about it. To give you an idea of where I left off I just started recruiting people for my castle (which I named Tazmilly btw).
One more thing I am typing this on my phone so forgive any weird words or spelling issues.
The pacing - the game is very quick moving but I actually like that a lot about the game.
The story - a surprisingly real and concise wartime story so far. I like that this game has illustrated the many different realities of war, while not coming off as preachy. It has some very strong writing. My biggest gripe so far with the story was how quickly Odessa was killed off, mostly because she seemed like such an important character and we barely knew her. Itβs also a bit of a stretch to make Tir a leader of a resistance, especially giving his background and his inevitable conflict with his father.
Scenario writing - Iβve enjoyed a lot of the scenarios the main party has been through so far. It isnβt as adventurous or Whimsical as something like final fantasy but itβs created some very tense situations for the main characters already.
Characters - the characters in this game are incredibly diverse and likeable so far. Something that really stands out to me about them is their portraits. These are some of my favorite character portraits Iβve ever seen, I love the 90s look and they all are incredibly distinct designs. While Iβm not the biggest fan of having a mostly silent protagonist, I think itβs working for this game because of the interesting cast around you. So far my favorite character is Viktor, and it WAS Odessa (π)
The music - the music has been incredible so far. Very good use of themes, especially during moments of tension. Town theme and overworld themes are great as well.
The combat - a pretty simple but effective combat system. Iβll be frank, itβs been easy as hell so far. The Zombie dragon was easily the most dangerous enemy so far. I enjoy the tow system for what it is, but Runes seem pretty over power
