A list of puns related to "Social Novel"
I have not read Gaskell's book but i'm watching the adaptation and the romance in it is oh so angsty and thrilling. Just thought I would recommend it for anyone looking for a good romance series to binge. It's available on dailymotion. It's not pure romance but romance is a big part of it for both the show and the book. Has anyone else watched a great adaptation of their favourite romance book or book with romance? ( Didn't know the distinction of romance book vs book with romance till I joined this sub)
.............. Book recommendation..............
Tired of every book/movie/tvshow starring some badass man who gets everything he wants in life, including the chicks. Would love to see a book or TV show where a guy is still trying to make a decent life for himself but struggles to connect with anyone.
I've recently started a job that has a lot of down time so I've started through a ton of books I own but haven't read. A lot of them are YA novels because most are basic stories that I can stop and start depending on how busy it gets. However, I've recently noticed that a running trope seems to be social workers who are bad at their jobs. I've now read no less than 5 books where the main character interacts with a social worker who either writes them off as "bad" or social workers who just give bad advice in general. I know this happens a lot on other media like TV shows and movies but it seems to be a recurring thing in these types of books.
Okay, so I mentioned this earlier, but I was thinking about writing a novel exploring social learning, surviving embarrassment, and making friends, but I'm autistic and my understanding of social communication, especially non-verbal communication, is limited, and I'm not really sure what kinds of scenarios to create for character or what kinds of challenges she should overcome.
After all, I remember some of the miscommunication situations I had when I was a child, but not all of them. I really should have kept a journal, but I didn't know what was happening or that I would eventually want to write a book about it.
Any suggestions?
Hello everyone,
I am a student who is about to write my first master thesis. I still don't have a concrete topic, but what I would like to write about are social media and internet-related novels. I was pretty hooked up and amazed by the TV show Black Mirror and books such as Dave Eggars's The Circle, Joshua Cohen's Book Of Numbers, and some more academic books such as Luciano Floridi's The Fourth Revolution and Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves To Death.
Of course, I should mention David Foster Wallace and his incorrigible essay on TV which kind of started my own obsession with this topic. What I would like to ask you is to suggest to me another book that has dystopian elements when social media and the internet are mentioned. One might argue this might be a tricky topic since the books are relatively new but I have to be honest saying that I really don't have the motivation to write anything other than this.
Thank you all in advance!
I have 3 space audible tokens and I'm looking for horror stories, but every single list I read about modern horror seems to be about sexism, racism, capitalism etc. Real life drama instead of monsters and spooky stuff. Is that still a thing or am I out of luck?
Need more of these, Iβve read the classics Brave New World, 1984, Fahrenheit 451. If it helps, I know The Plague by Camus isnβt dystopian but man thatβs one of the last books I couldnβt put down. Looking for that feeling again. Thank you in advance for any recommendations!
Almost Christmas
I'm having trouble remembering the name of a book, can someone help me? 3 levels of Earth, China has taken over the planet and there are 3 layers on the planet with social structure being higher with altitude. Name of the book is in a foreign language and I can never remember it. I started it and I lost the book but I loved the read
In a lot of romance ln's that I've seen, especially those in a high school setting tend to focus a lot on popularity, and social status, which I feel like takes the focus away from the actual relationship and ends up in the characters personalities being their social status. Not to mention that it typically ends up in having to hear random people's reactions to the fmc and mc's relationship every other page. Just looking for something that's more focused on the main characters, and their relationship.
In the past alcohol or drugs were how I relaxed in social situations. Now I'm sober and struggling. Almost a year off meth and weed, bit over a year off alcohol. Didn't keep very many friends at all once I entered recovery and have had to have several talks about unwelcome advances from people who I have befriended in the past. (despite making my intentions clear in each situation in the beginning, that I only sought friendship)
Most of the time I am fine with being by myself. I would even say I'm an introvert. But I get urges to socialise, and struggle when my 'second thoughts' trip up my words. I didn't have them when I was drinking and when I read this passage it seemed like a perfect description of how I often feel like I'm uptight by default these days.
"Ye got that little bitty bit inside oβ you that holds on, right? The bitty bit that watches the rest oβ ye. βTis the First Sight and Second Thoughts ye have, and βtis a wee gift anβ a big curse to ye. You see and hear what others canna, the world opens up its secrets to ye, but yeβre always like the person at the party with the wee drink in the corner who canna join in. Thereβs a little bitty bit inside ye that willna melt and flow. " (the wee free men by sir Terry Pratchett)
I get hung up on wondering what the other person is thinking and what I should do then I might start thinking about how I've gone silent and boom. Potentially promising conversation over because I'm in my head debating what to do or if I should abandon the situation because they don't actually want talk to me.
I'm trying to increase my friend circle. I don't like feeling like I'm taking myself out of the running for friendships before they start and when I can't relax during a conversation I think it's because I want it too much, the connection/feeling of belonging. Yes I had a distant and neglectful borderline abusive mother, I'm making efforts towards building my self worth so I'm less desperate for approval but it's slow going and/or I'm impatient. Trying to cover all my bases. I'm terrified of romantic relationships for various reasons. Talking purely about making platonic friends here. I'm bad at small talk when I know I'm doing it just for something to say. I don't like people small talking at me if I feel like they're doing it for that reason but mostly when I already feel vulnerable- I hate to be humored, feels too much like being patronized.

... keep reading on reddit β‘Hi y'all! Frequent commenter here. I talk a lot about awesome horror novels here in passing, but I just finished "Touch of Jen" by Beth Morgan and this book is going to really stick with me in a crazy way.
The blurb describes Remy and Alicia, two mid-20-somethings who work hourly service jobs. To pass time they both obsess over Jen, an old coworker of Remy's, who mirrors all those Instagram wannabe-model types. Jen is, to them, the ideal girl. Rich, with rich friends, who spend all their time doing yoga, surfing, sharing mantras from corny self help books- you all know the type.
But Remy and Alicia's hobby of following and critiquing Jen begin quickly bordering obsession, especially within the eerie, mentally and emotionally disturbed Alicia. They've even worked Jen into their sexual roleplay.
After seeing Jen while out and about, the duo get themselves invited to a beach trip with Jen, her partner Horus, and they're group of friends. Shit gets weird.
Without going into the actual spoilers, much of the eerieness and creepiness derives from Remy and Alicia in the first 4/5 of the novel. The way the dialogue is written, the blunt and ambivalent attitudes of Remy and Alicia, every interaction and every scene has a slight unsettling nature to it.
When we start to get to know Alicia more, we are creeped out and not sure whether to be concerned for her or to be scared of her. Remy underestimates her and her capabilities.
But just when you get into the dreamy, surreal manner in which the characters and dialogue are written, a bit of odd and supernatural tidbits start sprinkling themselves into the novel. I got through 4/5 of the novel, having read some creepy parts but still wondering "How is this horror?" And then something happens like halfway through that flips the entire novel on its head, and that's even before the horror and The Weirdness occurs.
Let me tell you, fellow modern horror lovers, that shit indeed hits the fan! If anyone's read the novel and wants to discuss the spoilers and details I'd love to do so in some spoiler comments I can block out. The little tidbits of supernatural elements absolutely explode towards the end of the novel and propel the reading into such an insane ending which really had me tearing through the last 100 pages to reach the satisfyingly eerie conclusion.
I know a lot of people have also been seeking modern horror authors who aren't Stephen King and this title has π― earned a spot on my Goodreads shelf of the

EDIT: Wow tons of replies, thanks so much! I'll be going through all these and checking them out, much appreciated
This is specifically for those of us who can afford Kindle Unlimited and little else, lol
What are your favorite post-apocalyptic novels that are heavy on building realistic colonies, tribes, or full-fledged civilizations with their own unique cultures, norms, and rituals?
Action and gunplay are great, too - but I really want to lose myself in a world unlike our own, where life has been fundamentally altered by a virus, zombie invasion, or even alien invasion could be interesting, too.
Itβs not on Kindle Unlimited, but my favorite example of those would be The Passage by Justin Cronin. Great book written by a master writer.
I've noticed that for a series like The Witcher, the author has a social media page, the video game has a social media page and the tv series has a social media page but the novel series itself does not have a page of its own.
I understand that some authors might just prefer to keep everything related to their novel on their own personal page but after doing some searching I haven't found any book series that has its own individual social media page.
Is there a legal reason as to why no one does this? Does it increase the risk of someone stealing your content?
It may just be that it is uncommon for a novel to have its own individual social media page but I just wanted to ask here anyway to see if anyone knew why this is the case.
And that is exciting. Itβs so strange that despite being one of the most popular factions in the setting that orks have only very recently (like since 8th) actually gotten any novella/novel love. I guess it took the right kind of writer to be able to make orks more than the depiction of being dumb hooligans while not throwing out what makes orks orks (while I love war of the beasts orks they donβt even feel like the same species which I get is the point)
Hello!
I am a part of a research team at the UC San Diego Design Lab looking for people to interview for a study regarding facilitating discussion on news articles to promote positive conversation. If you are interested in signing up for a brief interview (β€ 1 hour), please fill out this form. We would walk you through one of our prototype designs and ask your opinion on it. The interview would be conducted via Zoom, would require no preparation, and can be completely anonymous if you wish. Thanks!
