A list of puns related to "Snobbery"
Lane would call Gwen Stefani terrible, Fleetwood Mac a guilty pleasure while Lane dresses up as Avril lavigne
and I never understood Rory and Lorelai listening to a band as awful as the Bangles while shaming anyone who listened to the top 40
Was definitely more noticeable a few years ago for me (West Midlands). Curious to see whether anyone else has suffered the same prejudices and whereabouts you are in the country....and Merry Christmas!
I was raised in a household where roast chicken was served with apple sauce. I still have this combination to this day and have had multiple people over my life react like I shot someone when I tell them I eat this. I say let people have the sauce-roast combos they like, itβs 2021 end the snobbery.
I am talking about the phenomenon of Brits who, when encountering alternative (especially American) spelling, slang, phrasing or pronunciation, collapse into melodramatic folds over the "corruption" of the "Queen's English".
Firstly,. how much of a pathetic individual do you have to be to take your every cue from a family of inbred narcissists with a metal hat for anything in life. Just because the Queen talks a certain way, it's not the only correct way.
Secondly, language has always evolved. If you said "mate, I'm grabbing a tikka down Ruby five-ish. You got a quid for the meter? I'm out of cash" to an English person from 1720, they'd look at you as strangely as if you said "Y'all meeting at the park for the 4th? I'm fixing some cornbread". Yet both of those phrases are semantically correct, in that they effectively communicate the intended meaning to the intended audience.
Thirdly, spelling wasn't always so rigid. The colour/color debate is tame compared to the spelling variations you see in earlier manuscripts.
Fourthly, The reason I criticise this is because it is symptomatic of a wider issue, which is the godforsaken smugness of Brits, especially the English, online. Stop being so performatively quirky. Stop with your pseudo-apologetic "I'm terribly sorry, but I simply can't stand when people spell it "aluminum". Stop pretending the UK is the default to which all other cultures must strive to replicate.
ICOC family member told church friends the church I attend. βHAH that place is full of so called Christians who are anything but.β
I had to bite my tongue SO HARD. Wanna know what other Christians think about your cultβ¦I mean church?
What are some good words that prime people for openness and understanding? The sequence matters too doesnβt it. Should I pepper in some references to other peopleβs creations? We want to love each other indirectly because love in its purest form is aggressive and unrestrained, something not suited for the civilized. We buffer this by asking only pieces of the person. We want their essence. The body is just a conduit and only reminds us of our mortality. The more confusing the better. Because you canβt really kill something that doesnβt have a form. Itβs even better because as far as we can tell, we are the only ones privy to this sphere. We are one and the proof is just this.
If you're a knife steel nerd, and you enjoy testing/experiencing/sharpening different steels, that is a legitimate aspect of the hobby. IMHO a "steel snob" is someone who says "I liked that knife until I saw it was S30V" yet would fan boy over a knife because it has some new blade steel.
In my time cycling I have come across lots of judgy opinions online about other cyclists choices, and Iβm finding it hard to cut through the crap to understand which ones are just snobbery and which contain useful wisdom.
Which have you come across that have baffled you?
Some of mine are:
Donβt wear bumbags : this is a confusing one for me, surely a combo handbag and bikebag that sits low on your body is a good thing?
Making fun of hybrid and gravel bikes : in my (limited) experience both are really handy if you need one bike to cover light trails/commuting/medium distance road cycles so what is the beef? What am I missing? Likewise gravels seem to handle the above but better but still get made fun of.
Not wearing a proper cycling jersey = bad / wearing a βdentistβ or Fred jersey = bad : So what is good for a leisure cyclist who wants to cover 1/2 day trips without getting too sweaty? Why are some jerseys okay but others hilarious?
In my time researching composting, permaculture, vermicomposting, etc, Iβve found a lot of different and at times intensely contradictory information. While I try to keep an open mind for a lot of this stuff due to how different and unique and different each situation/context is, I find myself encountering a very specific type of what looks like βeco-snobberyβ, and Iβm wondering if anyone else has thoughts about it.
Primarily, Iβm talking about the word βcontaminationβ, and how itβs tossed around a little too liberally and without much context or definition. Iβm tired of reading blogs or articles that tell people they will βcontaminateβ their compost, garden, or plants, if they toss a shredded cereal box into their pile, or that you CAN compost dryer lint but ONLY if you use a specific biodegradable detergent AND only wear natural fibre clothing, otherwise youβre dumping micro plastics into the soil and killing the earth! Want to toss a used napkin in the pile? Better hope it doesnβt have a smidge of oil on it, or itβll CONTAMINATE it!! Accidentally scraped a chicken bone into your kitchen bucket? Some garlic? Citrus peel?! OH NO DUMP IT ALL OUT ITS CONTAMINATED!! Bloody exhausting!!
Even as a seasoned gardener, itβs difficult to sort the facts from fiction, I canβt imagine trying to get into composting or vermiculture as a newbie and seeing βcontamination!!!β at every turn, it would be absolutely overwhelming!
Thinking about today's awesome Jan's Stolen Barn- A Pepino Investigation π΅οΈββοΈ pinned post from Q I got to wondering...
What's UP with suddenly needing to own horses, anyway?
I mean, Alec grew up delivering papers and doing lawn work as a teen on Long Island; Hillary did gymnastics and dance in Boston.
Why suddenly needing to own and operate a "rescue horse farm?"
A deep love of Horses/"Horsing" doesn't seem to be a part of either of their pasts.
I think it's partly the Brick "I Love Lamp" phenomenon of Hillary (or Alec) just looking around at things in their eyeline and deciding they want them AND...
I think it's part obnoxious social climbing and wanting to fit in with the Hamptons upper class, mega-elite set.
Ditto the Tennis "lessons."
Alec is deep into the U.S. Open and this is another attempt of his to run with the millionaire-billionaire celebrity big dogs. Those sad "tennis camp" pix were for HIM, not those kids.
You will never see these kids playing Pop Warner football π or T-Ball or Little League baseball βΎ.
That would be way too "Long Island" and "common."
Which is too bad, b/c these sports are so fun and most children are desperate to participate in them! Esp little boys!
Those kids don't even play soccer!
Also, I see Hillary doing a LOT of Equestrian training over there. HER. NOT HER KIDS.
So, it's something new for her to distract herself with and show herself off doing. Like her dancing was. Show off, show off, look at meeeeee...
What do her kids do during Mommy's riding lessons and practice sessions? Are they even there?
I high-key think Alec had this great idea for a charity scam that would also help him get in with the East Coast Elite Horsey Crowd and BAM! the "Baldwincito Horse Farm" was born.
Variation on that for their "Tennis Camp" experience.
These kids aren't allowed to have real outside interests and pursuits of their own, just ones that benefit Mommy and Daddy or play into the image they want to maintain.
If it doesn't involve sitting at her computer and clicking buttons to order shit on Amazon, as per their activities and hobbies, unless Hillary gets something out of it, too, she just can't be bothered.
All that travelling back and forth and I never see them taking the children to or picking them up from dance lessons, swim practices, tae kwon do, karate, art, music, other sports...NOTHING.
It's all about H & A, as usual.
I'm a neuro PhD and just curious if math also has this awful phenomenon of ascribing undue quality to work published in certain journals. I would think not since math is more rigorous (so undue hype is probably less of a problem) but I'm curious!
The older I get the more snobby I get, I canβt help it. Is the UK becoming more of a riff-raff laden hole, or is it just me?
420 upvotes and we'll stop right there π
My entire music library is in iTunes, and it is functional and convenient for me. I recently discovered I can have lossless music in iTunes (I have files as high as 2,995 kbps), and between that and turning off options like 'Sound Enhancer' and 'Sound Check', I don't really see why using iTunes would be any worse than using any other player as far as sound quality is concerned. Is there something I'm missing? Does the same file sound worse played in iTunes versus Foobar and VLC? Or can I continue using iTunes, knowing I'm getting the best sound quality I can from my library?
For those who have went to a less prestigious school for undergrad and then went to an Ivy, Oxbridge, or another really prestigious university for grad school, have you ever heard or personally encountered snobbery from undergrads (or anyone else there)? Have you ever been made to feel like you didn't belong?
I'm mainly talking about the attitude that is like: "You wouldn't have gotten in here for undergrad" coming from the impression that graduate degrees are typically less competitive (though not necessarily easier!) to get in than many undergrad programs at the Ivies for example.
I really can't think of a good title for this so we're just going to call it as it is: me being snobbish because I want something new to complain about.
We're going to talk about psychedelic rock with Enhypen, emo with TXT, and why I want to slap whoever named the 0X1=LOVESONG remix "emocore", a.k.a the most redundant descriptor of genre I've read in K-Pop. I know it's a little early to make this post now and not when the full remix is released with TXT's comeback, but if I end up looking like a clown I'll take it in stride.
(And, this isn't a critique of the groups themselves/the members. Just being clear. I don't really know anything about Enhypen or care to, but I'm a casual MOA. Not that I need to be to have an opinion, but just keep in mind I'm not saying that insert-group is stupid and needs to be cooked in an air-fryer over music.)
Genre is simultaneously a very easy concept to understand, and also very complicated. It's not just a certain sound or a lyrical theme, it's a specific combination of sonic and lyrical characteristics frequently paired together that make up a genre.
Enhypen can throw a drum beat under echoing synths, and it doesn't make the song psychedelic rock. (A label I saw Engenes using.) Lower guitar notes don't make a song emo. (A label I see TXT using that I'm praying will turn out to be true.)
Firstly let's talk about Intro: The Invitation. I remember that on Twitter and here on Reddit, I saw a decent amount of people saying "Enhypen are the first K-Pop group to do psychedelic rock!" And that's just blatantly untrue. The song is, no two ways about it, dreampop. This isn't me "gate-keeping" psychedelic rock because Enhypen are more than welcome to do the first psychedelic rock K-Pop song if they'd like, this is just pointing out that Intro: Invitation isn't the song for that. It's almost the textbook definition of dreampop. There is not a damn guitar in there that is prominent to the ears.
And I cannot figure out why we can't just call it dreampop. Dreampop is a kind of alternative rock and it's psychedelic. Intro: Invitation hits every single characteristic of that genre right out of the definition. I guess it just doesn't sound as edgy or cool or unique as saying "the first group to do psychedelic rock", because other groups such as TXT and LOONA have done dreampop? There's a weird obsession of being able to say your favourite group is "the first group to ___" and I suppose that's where it comes from. Also,
... keep reading on reddit β‘Iβm not here to call any individuals out but whatβs the deal with tele snobbery? My socials are awash with people making judgements about people that watch LoveIsland. As if the very act of watching the show makes you some sort of cretin.
Itβs TV. Itβs escapism. Itβs predictive formula with human interest. Why is my watching it any reflection of my standing as a human? I donβt need to aspire to be a contestant to find it compelling.

This question arose after reading a post about opinions on the work of Rupi Kaur. Some see her work (and others like her) as a threat to poetry that often has many nuanced layers, as seen in the works of classical (and long-buried) poets.
They conclude the following of such modern poets is due to their works being consumer-friendly in an age where deep engagement with text is not as prevalent, with society instead opting for less depth; quick, superficial engagement that is mistaken for being 'deep'.
What are your thoughts?
Is society's seeming aversion to deep engagement a threat to much-valued poetry of past decades and centuries?
Hi,
So my friend is or at least *was* from a middle class, arguably lower UMC background (his dad was a doctor). He's now been working in retail half a year in a deprived neighbourhood and in that time has heard a lot of people refer to the middle class and UMC as 'posh' 'snobs' or even just 'rich'. He takes offence to the notion his family didn't earn their wealth and feels this is displaced resentment at the government for cutting opportunities for class mobility. He thinks terms like Bourgeois are obnoxious. He also has some negative stereotypes about working class 'culture' who he has stereotyped somewhat as lumpenproleteriat; a lot of this is insecurity from people not always liking nerdy hobbies to be fair.
The main problem for your purposes, he is a liberal socdem recently interested in politics, but doesn't think about economics much and mainly just dunks on social conservatives and Republicans (we're not even American lol)
He has come to like the term 'reverse' snobbery to refer to poor people judging people for being better off and using their hard-earned wealth to support their family's education, careers, and to generally also maintain middle class status. His moral reasoning is basically the blank slate, that "I don't judge them for being poor so why do they judge me for being financially comfortable?"
So his solace currently is this displaced resentment at the middle class which should be aimed at mainly the government and then the corporations. I feel like this is half true and we both agree the big problem is the uber rich like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk...but he is ignoring class privilege in the political sense imo. Like progressive taxation and other class interests. I also think he is oblivious to the actual cost of living right now, since he doesn't rent or pay any bills; he has before but not in this country. I think he does not understand that class mobility is itself a privilege and it was neoliberals (who may be socially liberal) who voted to cut services implicitly by reducing taxes.
I'm a bit frustrated, as liberalism is being championed by someone who doesn't actually understand socialism but champions the socdem approach which the GOP call socialist. I tried to explain labour theory of value vs. socialist organisation to both my friends the other day and just got blank stares. I am not sure they even know how neoliberalism works; we didn't even cover marginal utility or supply side economics. This eludes me when they
... keep reading on reddit β‘A few weeks ago, there were lots of people on here condemning seniors for shopping around not wanting AZ and how they should go to the back of the line if they do that. Well, now people are actually getting to appointments and walking away without a shot when they find out it is Moderna. So, vaccine snobbery comes at all ages and across all groups.
Moderna is a good vaccine, please don't waste an appointment, taking the time away from others would be thrilled to receive it.
