Vascular smooth muscle cell

Do both ↑ cGMP and ↑ cAMP cause vascular smooth muscle cell relaxation thus vasodilation? I am wondering that bc nitrates cause vasodilation by increasing cGMP while beta-2 adrenergic receptors cause vasodilation by increasing cAMP.

TIA!!

Cat fine needle aspirate taken from intestinal mass showed smooth muscle tumor cells?? Anyone have more info on this for research? THANK YOU ALLπŸ’™

OG Post here

Finally received the results of the fine needle aspirate done for an intestinal mass on my kitty!

After an ultrasound, the large mass (5cm) seen on xray was actually on my boys small intestine! Ofcourse myself & the vet go into worst case scenario thinking it's most likely lymphoma or a carcinoma. The ultrasound did not see any inflammation on any lymph nodes so the vet was saying 60/40 it was either a carcinoma v lymphoma. We did a biopsy regardless & it indicated neither cells describing the two above cancers.

Instead it was something my dr described as super rare with very little info on it. The oncologyist believes it is smooth muscle tumor & recommends surgery for removal and maybe chemo after that.

I'm so happy that we have options to treat my best friend. Even if it only gives him a year it's much more time together than the month estimates we were given before. The best news I've received in ages, even in such a terrible situation πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ’™

Is there any test that can detect aposis of smooth muscle cells in the penile tissue? Apart from my penis and balls being completely numb, the skin on my penis has also lost tons of elasticity and kind looks and feels like leather or rubber.

If smooth muscle cells release renin as a result of lowered blood pressure, how does thickening afferent arteriole walls cause less activation of these cells?

I was watching a video that stated this to be the case, but Isn't blood pressure inversely proportional to the diameter of an artery? By that token, shouldn't thickened arterioles lead to increased blood pressure, and therefore less renin secretion? Thanks a bunch to anyone who responds!

"Corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cell dysfunction and phenotype transformation are related to erectile dysfunction in prostatitis rats with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome" RESEARCH

Background

The relationship between chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) and erectile dysfunction (ED) has been shown in many studies. However, the specific mechanism remains unclear. This study was to investigate the corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cell function and phenotype transformation in Experimental autoimmune prostatitis (EAP) rats.

Methods

EAP was induced in rats by using prostate protein supplemented with immuneadjuvant extraction, and the max-ICP and MAP were measured. IHC and Masson staining were done to assess inflammatory infiltration and collagen deposition in the corpus cavernosum, respectively. Subsequently, normal rat and EAP rat CCSMCs were purified by tissue block implantation and differential adherence method. The oxidative stress, smooth muscle phenotype transformation, cell cycle and intracellular calcium ion transport were also evaluated.

Results

The ratio of max ICP/MAP in EAP rats significantly reduced, and the TNF-Ξ± content and collagen deposition in the corpus cavernosum markedly increased as compared to healthy rats. High-purity rat CCSMCs were obtained. Oxidative stress was evident and the cGMP content decreased in the EAP rat CCSMCs. The expression of Cav1.2, IP3R1 and RyR2 increased, but the SERCA2 expression decreased in EAP rat CCSMCs, which was accompanied by increased intracellular calcium. Increased expression of OPN, collagen and KCa3.1, decreased Calponin expression and increased proportion of cells in the S phase were also observed in the EAP rat CCSMCs.

Conclusion

CP causes oxidative stress and imbalance of intracellular calcium in CCSMCs and promotes CCSMCs transformation from contractile to synthetic state, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of ED.

Accelerated cerebral vascular injury in diabetes is associated with vascular smooth muscle cell dysfunction. - March 2020

Abstract

Individuals with diabetes are more susceptible to cerebral vascular aging. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well elucidated. The present study examined whether the myogenic response of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) is impaired in diabetic rats due to high glucose (HG)-induced cerebral vascular smooth muscle cell (CVSMC) dysfunction, and whether this is associated with ATP depletion and changes in mitochondrial dynamics and membrane potential. The diameters of the MCA of diabetic rats increased to 135.3 ± 11.3% when perfusion pressure was increased from 40 to 180Β mmHg, while it fell to 85.1 ± 3.1% in non-diabetic controls. The production of ROS and mitochondrial-derived superoxide were enhanced in cerebral arteries of diabetic rats. Levels of mitochondrial superoxide were significantly elevated in HG-treated primary CVSMCs, which was associated with decreased ATP production, mitochondrial respiration, and membrane potential. The expression of OPA1 was reduced, and MFF was elevated in HG-treated CVSMCs in association with fragmented mitochondria. Moreover, HG-treated CVSMCs displayed lower contractile and proliferation capabilities. These results demonstrate that imbalanced mitochondrial dynamics (increased fission and decreased fusion) and membrane depolarization contribute to ATP depletion in HG-treated CVSMCs, which promotes CVSMC dysfunction and may play an essential role in exacerbating the impaired myogenic respo
