Very informative discussion.
ABSTRACT
Background: Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a clinical condition characterized by an excessive bacterial growth in the small intestine. Clinical symptoms might be non-specific (dyspepsia, bloating or abdominal discomfort). Nevertheless, SIBO can cause severe malabsorption, serious malnutrition, immune reactions, and deficiency syndromes. This retrospective case report introduces six patients with positive lactulose hydrogen SIBO breath tests. The patients chose between different therapeutic options and willingly consented to a nutritional intervention, based on a zero carbohydrate, zero fibre, carnivore diet, extended over two to six weeks of time. The rationale for this dietary approach was based on the idea that opportunistic, carbohydrate favouring bacteria and methanogens proliferate in the small intestines if the natural barriers in the digestive tract have been weakened due to stress, illness, medication, etc. A zero carbohydrate, carnivore diet, consisting of animal fats and protein, could essentially eliminate these carbohydrate favouring bacteria through starvation while still providing plenty of both calories and nutrients.
Methods: six patients from our functional medicine clinic followed a strict zero carb, zero fiber, carnivore diet for 2-6 weeks. A lactulose breath test was performed immediately before and after the dietary change as well as extensive medical testing.
Results: five patients that followed the carnivore diet for four weeks or longer tested negative for SIBO, and the one patient that only endured the diet for two weeks had a near complete eradication of her hydrogen elevation. Methane values were generally low both before and after the dietary treatment, but there was a significant decrease in patients 3 and 5.
Conclusions: The carbohydrate, zero fibre, carnivore diet shows great potential for being a readily available, cost-effective, and equally effective alternative treatment for SIBO. According to our observations it also results in better satisfaction after meals, decreases cravings for sweets and generate weight-loss in patients where it is needed.

I love when studies come out proving me right :)

Many of you already knew this based on your own personal experiences. It's nice to have the science to back it up though.
Probiotics comes up a lot here. This is the first study linking their use to SIBO and to brain fog and bloating, the things many take them to get RID of.

I have seen SIBO mentioned over at r/SebDerm, I had not heard of it before.
Just wondering if anyone has had a diagnosis of SIBO. After months of loose stools with a little fresh blood on it and lots of tests and medications, that is what our vet found. Unfortunately not the root cause, but something we know can be treated with antibiotics.
Digging though the very limited literature I see small case studies. Posting here because Iβm wondering if there are any cases out in the wild.
Hello!
I just realized that all the digestive issues I've been dealing with lately are connected to having too low stomach acid that also caused me SIBO... I'm 99% sure at this point. I'm taking a bunch of apple cider vinegar capsule before my meals now to increase stomach acid and feels like a relief. But I still want to eliminate the bacteria grown on the wrong place so I can have my digestive system working as intended a lot sooner.
However I didn't find any article regarding how long I have to fast to do it, they recommend IF which I'm already doing and it's not enough, they recommend 3-7 days of bone broth fast or carnivore too but I believe extended fasting would be more sustainable to me (and probably more effective too).
Does it mean I would have to fast for 3-7 days to have good result? The longest fast I did was 48 hours multiple times, I think I can do 72 hours too but I'm not sure if I can go any longer or if it's even safe to me because I may have some malnutrition because of this issue and also corona just reached my neighbourhood.
Any advice is appreciated.
Hi everyone, this is my 1st post! I joined recently. Thanks for all your info. Iβve benefited from feeling like thereβs support out there.
Iβve had rosacea for about 4 years now and had luck self treating with a strict skincare routine, but this past year it got worse. I visited a derm who told me to stop all my skincare, put me on doxy then oracea, metro, and mirvaso (now rhofade cause of insurance but not really helping). Doxy worked but was too strong for my stomach even if I ate a full meal. Had to stop it. My skin doesnβt get better and Iβm getting desperate.
My therapist and PCP say they think I should test for SIBO, but my derm said thereβs not enough evidence to support rosacea can be caused by SIBO. So Iβm leaning towards laser. However Iβll try anything at this point. Has anyone gone through this process before?
TLDR: Anyone test for SIBO and had luck treating rosacea that way?
Anyone else researched these?
I did some reading and after hearing about the hydrogen burps someone told me mine smelled like. I read that fermentation in the intestines/hydrogen burps could be why I have major issues with eating carbs. I noticed in cutting out carbs I feel way better.
I'm going to mention these 3 things to my Dr. While I get heartburn from many foods not just carbs, I seem to be having intestinal issues - gas, takes a long time to digest anything. It's worth a mention.
Might be worth some reading /talking to your doctor if you feel these might be your issue also.
hello everyone!
just before the whole healthcare system shut down over here (except for life-threatening and covid cases) i got diagnosed with SIBO. i probably have had it my entire life since i have always been very skinny (currently 56kg with 187cm) and had iron defficiency several time and i also have osteoprosis currently at the age of 25.
i took antibiotics ( Rifaximin ) to treat SIBO as well as probiotics however my condition still persists. the only thing changed is that my stool is 9/10 times hard, dry and is in little pieces despite adequate water intake.
i am wondering what could cause this condition. i was thinking maybe diverticules in the small intestine but i really have no idea. the only things i know is that i have probably had this my entire life and its not going away with medication.
I thought this might be helpful. It makes sense to me.

Why does SIBO cause a decrease in vitamins A, D, E, B12 and increase folate and Vit K?
I know gut flora makes Vit K, but what about folate?
Found this in the Zanki deck, but it's not in FA.
Basically, I've been dealing with SIBO for the better part of two years. It causes me to be in a significant amount a pain, I'm tired all the time and I can barely eat anything without making myself feel worse. I've seen two gastroenterologists and neither of them knew what to do... not that they admitted it, they just prescribed stuff to treat some of the symptoms but never actually treated the root cause. I'm really fedup and I'd like to stop wasting my time when it comes to treating my SIBO.
I've googled and googled but haven't been able to find any legit person who knows what they're doing. If anyone has had any success with eradicating it, please let me know who helped you. Heck, I'll even go to Toronto to see someone if I have to.
P.S. For anyone about to suggest la banquise, I tried it, it didn't work
