A list of puns related to "Skipping Rope Rhyme"
Chinese/Asian jump rope (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_jump_rope) was very popular among girls in Korea when I was young, it was called go-mu-jul (literally, rubber ropes). We used black rubber ropes and I still remember some chants. Those I remember have totally non-sensical lyrics in retrospect; the lyrics actually have a bit mysterious vibe.
I learned that some women older than me remember the same lyrics, so this was transmitted along generations, from girls to girls. One example:
African people have a good heart / so nice, so nice, they bought me a cake
Got sick after eating the cake, went to the doctor / a pumpkin-like lady calls me
Oh, oh, cucumber massage / Sing, sing, "single love you"
Why Africans (because I believe that most black people in Korea back then were American GIs), why cake, why cucumber massage, and why the absurd English sentence "Single love you" π
This fascinates me. This must not go further back than the Korean War, because it was only the time of the Korean War when Koreans were exposed en masse to American GIs, black people, and English language.
Wikipedia told me that skipping rope rhymes have similar elements across the world: non-sensical lyrics, the lack of moral lessons, child-to-child transmission, and female topics
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skipping-rope_rhyme
>Chants are intended to structure the game and are secondary, explaining the nonsense or irrational lyrics. These chants are unusual inasmuch as they were transmitted from child to child usually without an underlying reason, as opposed to nursery rhymes which were transmitted from adult to child and often contained a moral. Chants may contain girlish references to boyfriends or marriage
Sadly I heard that these children's games and chants are vanishing from younger generations' memories as children in Korea are sent to Hak-wons (private academies) after school from earlier ages (you know, the crazy "education fever"), have less and less leisure time, have longer screen time, and do not play in playgrounds anymore.
Any memories/thoughts?
How much does a Traditional Thai Jump Rope weigh? I have one that I've bought recently nd I'm gonna keep it anyway cus the quality and look of it seems good, it weighs 420 grams (0.92 lbs), it also has wooden handles instead of plastic ones aswell. Anyone who has one, u mind telling me how much it weighs? (This question is for the ropes that don't have extra removable weight in the handles)
Hi folks, I am living on the 6th floor apartment in a building. Will that be a issue to my neighbour on the 5th floor, if I practice regular skipping for excercise between the given timings? Got a new skipping rope but bit cautious whether I should do it in my apartment or go to a park?
Would like to hear from you. Thank you.
Br,
Edit: Thank you all for the variety of suggestions.
I was wondering if there were any space to perform jumpropes/skipping at the IMA? It's a form of cardio I really really enjoy but I haven't come across any spaces where I can practice it. Any advice?
Any help is appreciated
Not last night but the night before, 24 robbers came knocking at my door ...
Down by the ocean, down by the sea, Johnny broke a bottle and he blamed it on me ...
Cindarella, dressed in yellow, went upstairs to kiss her fella ...
[Boy's name] and [girl's name] sittin' in a tree, K - I - S - S - I - N - G ...
Blue bells, cockle shells, eemie imie over ...
In came the doctor, in came the nurse, in came the lady with the alligator purse ...
My mommy told me, if I was good, that she would buy me a rubber dolly ...
When I was growing up in the sixties, all the neighborhood girls used to play jump rope obsessively. I wasn't very good at it, though I had a rope attached to the garage door handle so I could practice with my neighbor before we got tested on the playground. She was far less clumsy than me.
Part of the game was to chant rhymes like these while jumping or turning the rope. Most rhymes told you to do various things (turn around, touch the ground, go "in" or "out", etc.) If you "missed" (that is, tripped over the rope), you had to go out and take over for one of the rope turners. Boys were vigorously excluded from these games, because (obviously) they had cooties.
It seems to me kids growing up now have a very much different life than we had back then. Better in many ways, but in some ways poorer. If you could be a kid at any point in history, what would you choose?
Hi all, so basically I am looking for a JR/Skipping workout.
I'm 28 years old, 5'11" in height and weigh about 12 stone. I was wondering what would be the best approach.
Should I add in running or should it be purely skipping/jump rope? How many times a week should the workout include? How long should I skip for each day? Should I increase this amount each day or week? If so by how much?
My aim is to lose weight. I would love to lose a stone or stone and a half if I could. My diet is sorted, I just need a practical routine/workout. I think a good workout plan would enable me to see proper results.
I have jumped rope/skipped before, but still very much a beginner.
Thanks, in advance.
My family was never particularly religious. Sure, we had a few rituals here and there but nothing too overbearing. Except when it came to her. Perhaps a small-town mystery or a scary story to keep kids in line come bedtime, the girl with the skipping rope had been a part of our hometown lore for over fifty years.
The rules were simple. After the sun went down, we were not to open the door if we heard a girl skipping rope outside. She would pretend to be lost and ask for her parents but under no circumstances were we to help her. If we ignored her cries for help long enough, she would leave us alone. If you grow up with something, you come to accept it as gospel truth, no matter how implausible it may be. To me, she was nothing more than Santaβs evil cousin who would visit us every couple of years.
I was around twelve when I had my first encounter with her. Almost at the cusp of my teenage years, I had decided to subvert my parentsβ authority and watch late night TV. I had heard from extremely reliable sources at school that they would play reruns of all my favorite shows at 12 A.M. Besides, it was a Friday night, and I didnβt have to get up early.
My parents had tucked me in and were out in the kitchen wrapping up dinner. I waited patiently, staring at the light at the threshold of my door. The dishwasher started running and soon enough the lights turned off. Tip-toeing my way across the living room, I made myself comfortable in front of the TV. I had to increase the volume just enough to not arouse suspicion.
It was around 2 A.M. when I heard it.
Clank
I froze. I thought I had been busted, dad must have opened his door and found me.
Clank
I turned around but he wasnβt there.
Clank
Soon enough, I heard hushed knocks on the door. I knew enough not to open it; mom had drilled that into me. Yet something about the sound drew me to it. I just had to see her. I struggled but eventually decided to look out the window to see who this girl was.
I was pulling the curtains when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I was about to scream but a hand was on my mouth.
βWhat the hell are you doing? Shut up and donβt move.β
It was my dad. He had heard the TV and spotted me next to the door. He slowly pulled me back and carried me to my room, but not before I was able to see her. I couldnβt make out much; her black hair was covering her face and her eyes were pointed at the ground. She was dressed in white but was covered completely in mud and dirt. She just sto
... keep reading on reddit β‘I introduced myself to calisthenics throught Hampton content few month ago and love it.
Lately my youtube propose a lot of jump skipping videos, it's seem interesting and very effective.
So what do you think about it ?
Do you do it, like a complement to calisthenics training ?
Thanks mates
I've always used the cheap plastic ropes. And without looking too closely when I see pros train they seem to be using the same
However when I search for ropes on amazon the most popular ropes are 'speed ropes' with alluminum and 'ball bearings' whatever they are. Is all of this just a gimmick or are they actually better? What are the amateurs and pros using
Finally - could someone just recommend a rope, my old plastick one is tangling up too much
I go on walks regularly and occasionally cycle, but I really want to return to skipping rope, which I was kinda okay at. I'm talking 1 hour grind every day.
Hello, First of all sorry for my bad English but I will try my best.
A year ago I crashed with my Motorcycle. and fractured ankle. I don't think that's the main problem cause it hurt's only on top of the foot and little bit inside if I touch it, Second day I had swelling around the top and left side [not ankle] I think the Arch pain but better ask. the Fracture happened on the right foot where the pain is.
I was jumping on a gym puzzle mat. with Ultra boost adidas boot's.
It's not like I can't stand the pain but it's annoying so I just wanted to ask if it's normal. Only have the pain 4 day's it's getting little bit better but still annoying so if you had/have anything like this please give me some feedback. Everything help's.
Do a skip rope rhyme about Sans And Papyrus
