hello! i have been working on a master plan for a giant bucket-list trip for my partner and i. we were supposed to go at some point in 2021 as a pseudo-honeymoon but obviously COVID nixed that idea β and now iβve had so much more time to plan (for better or worse).

some general notes about us:
- i took a few years of japanese in middle/high school (USA) and can fully read hiragana + katakana. also retained a small library of important kanji, and a passable understanding of basic getting-around / asking-basic-questions level japanese. i plan on hitting the books for a bit to freshen up a few months prior to the trip as my partner has zero japanese and iβll be the point person should we need anything.
- we love long trips and have been on a few together. month-and-a-half in france / month in UK + spain etc. weβve both also lived abroad previously (china for me, spain + UK for him) so being in an unfamiliar environment for a long time is our happy place. we also are pretty good problem solvers and have navigated our way out of some fairly sticky situations with zero issue.
- we own a design firm together (iβm an architect, heβs an interior designer) and we have the latitude to basically disappear for a while with some pre-planning. this also sort of informs the places weβre planning on going and things we want to see β some people may find pieces of our itinerary strange as they donβt seem to be common travel destinations. very much into architecture (brutalist / metabolist / modernist / minimalist β and completely fascinated by japanese temple architecture) / fashion / designed spaces β and willing to go a long way out of the way just for a photo or a ten-minute sit-and-stare in a lobby somewhere.
- we are likely going to βintelligently wanderβ when weβre in the cities. what we usually do is pick an attraction / neighborhood / museum etc. to go see and then plan a day around it β leaving room for wandering / finding interesting things along the way. since this itinerary is so far out, my questions are more related to big-picture logistics,

The reasons I invested:

Trip Report - Shikoku (Tokushima and Kochi Prefectures)
Hello, I have been really enjoying reading and commenting on posts in this group. I am a resident of Japan who gets out of Tokyo for nature outings any chance that I get.
I wanted to share a brief trip report from my recent trip to Shikoku Island - known in the international travel community with its pilgrimage route covering 88 buddhist temples. The pilgrimage route, the history and the whole culture surrounding it is fascinating and deserves all the attention that it gets. However, during my recent visit to Shikoku (it was my second time - the first visit was to Cape Ashizuri at the southernmost tip of Shikoku) - I noticed that some of the other wonders of Shikoku get little bit overlooked due to the popularity of the pilgrimage route. As a result, I wanted to list some small town stops here for your consideration if you plan a trip to Tokushima and Kochi prefectures of Shikoku. These towns can make a great two days stop if you are walking the pilgrimage route or can be a destination on their own if you like small town vibe with access to good range of sites and eateries. P.S. I am not affiliated with any tourism association or any hotels/hostels, just a personal blogger.
Hiwasa - Tokushima Prefecture
Easily accessible by train from Tokushima (served by an airport) - Hiwasa town hosts Temple # 23 - Yakuoji along the pilgrimage route. It is a small town by the ocean where I observed some movement towards a more active tourism also appealing to a younger crowd. There were couple of hostels opened by young Japanese who moved into the town from big cities of Japan. Both hostels had their own pub or cafe section which attracted not only visitors but also locals in the evening. The town is also home to a sea turtle museum. There were good range of eateries. I unfortunately only spent one night here but I definitely want to return for more. It is also the gateway to famous Minamiawa Sunline Route (that I walked the next day) which will take you to Minami town in less than 4 hours (on foot) following the Pacific Ocean and great views all through the way. It is a vehicle route but the traffic level is usually very low.

I've now been meaning to do this writeup for... basically three years. Finally took a pandemic to get around to it. Hopefully this will offer some good content for others -- Shikoku is SUCH a rewarding place to visit and this was an amazing road trip.
The Shikoku pilgrimage has a couple of good blogs written about it from a walking perspective in English, but I havenβt seen much about the experience of driving it in English. A friend and I decided to take about two weeks and give it a shot in the last week of March 2018. We rented a teensy kei (yellow plate) truck with an itty-bitty pop-up camper on the back and set off from Kobe.

Some background:

I was living in Japan and had a Japanese driverβs license at the time. I also had phone service through Docomo and rarely encountered any kind of issues with service. We definitely downloaded Shikokuβs Google Maps before setting off, but it was pretty rare that we were in an area with super weak signal. If youβre planning to use a portable wifi or tourist sim card, you might want to consider getting a rental car that has a satellite navigation system included.

I speak decent Japanese. There's sporadic English signage on the main roads, but looking for the parking lots and things definitely required more Japanese.

I didnβt go through with buying the ohenro hat/staff/jacket/name cards or any of the other equipment - just filled out a bazillion standard goshuin accordion-fold books. My friend bought one of the special Shikoku pilgrimage books for the stamps. We prayed at each of the temples but didnβt do any kind of sutras.

I was under 25 at the time, and most rental camper companies I found prohibited me from renting based on age. The company I rented from was the only place that I could find that would rent to me in the area. The company has closed due to COVID and Iβm not surprised... they forgot our sleeping bags, operated out of a parking lot in one of the marinas outside of Kobe rather than having an actual office, and had other hiccups.
