A list of puns related to "Sappho"
I'm writing a short fiction piece that references famous romantic or erotic poets. I won't explain the plot, but the theme is the Greek muse Erato, whose domain was mostly lyric/'erotic' poetry. So far I've found this list of poets I'm planning on referencing:
Most of these poets did not primarily create erotic or romantic work, but they've all written various erotic or romantic poems. For example, I'm planning on highlighting Shakespeare's Sonnet 20, Sappho's Fragment 16, and Dickinson's For Each Ecstatic Instant.
What I'm looking for is 3-5 poets to fill the gap between Sappho and Rumi, so roughly 650 B.C.E. to 1200 C.E. I'd especially like to highlight poets who aren't from English-speaking countries, even better if they aren't from Europe at all, since most of my list right now highlights white, English-speaking poets. They must have written at least one poem with romantic or erotic themes, and it must be available in translation for me to read.
Please do not suggest poets who lived and worked past 1600 C.E. or before 650 B.C.E., unless you have some particularly good ideas who are not white/English speakers. Other than that, feel free to give me all of your favorite poets and their work! I'd also just love to branch out and read some great poetry that might not otherwise cross my radar, even if I don't end up using it :)
I'll also be posting this on r/poetry and r/AskHistorians. If anyone has good ideas for other subreddits to ask I'd love to hear them. Also, if this isn't a good place for this post let me know!
Thanks so much!
Hi! I'm - despite my name - a closeted lesbian and can't be publicly out, but I really want to get a poem of Sappho's tattooed in greek. I studied modern greek for a while due to having greek ancestry, but I am in no way good, only know basic phrases so I don't trust my own linguistic skills here, especially when the poem I want is in old greek.
So, to my question, does anyone have a clue if this is somewhat correctly written:
ΞΞ½α½±ΟΞ΅ΟΞΈΞ±α½· ΟΞΉΞ½α½± ΟΞ±ΞΌΞΉ ΞΊΞ±α½Ά α½ΟΟΞ΅ΟΞΏΞ½ αΌΞΌΞΌα½³ΟΞ½.
I have not yet found a translation that really encapsulates the meaning of the original and I am also not a native english speaker and do not want tattoos in english. The greek version should be close to the original, if I understood it correctly; it is supposed to be something akin to "Men will remember us even in the future/thereafter" but like ... More deep sense of the word future.

I had a dream that I was listening to a new wlw pop culture podcast called βGood Morning, Sappho,β and Taylor recorded the opening theme song, which was a cover of βGood Morning Starshineβ from HAIR but singing the word Sappho, obviously. Just things that apparently live rent free in the attic of my Lover-house-mind ππ»ββοΈ
Whatβs the weirdest/best dream youβve had about our dear Blondie?
I wonder how much there are music (preferrably in Ancient Greek) of works of poets of Ancient Greece made into album? Would be delighted if shared under this.
So, should I confess to her? But then again I don't wanna ruin our friendship, but I also wanna take and shoot my shot LIKE JENNY I WANNA RUIN OUR FRIENDSHIP, WE SHOULD BE LOVERS INSTEAD but she's so straight, and she's also somebody I care too much about, and I know for a fact I'm never moving on and will sure get my heart broken and even if I get into another relationship, I can't possibly give my heart to another person, cause it's already been taken and she doesn't even know it
Hopefully this is the right place, I'm looking for a proper translation of Sappho's poetry that possibly comes with info on what we know about her. There's a bi girl I like and she loves ancient Greece but sadly knows nothing about Sappho so I want to fix that.
When it comes to your family "knowing" about your relationship?
Either your family doesn't know OR they won't acknowledge your relationship. Sure you may be in your 30s, but times are tough now and independence may not be possible. Maybe you fear being disowned or losing inheritance. Maybe you fear homelessness or loss of capital. Maybe they will just try to "passive aggressive" you out of your relationship or constantly try to get you to date "more appropriate _____ individual." How does this fare with your being older?
I'm the former (religious individual dating a non-religious individual), if he comes up in conversation with family, he is just another "friend." I am curious as to whether this is true for anyone else and how y'all handle it!
I mean, like, was there every a named woman she wrote about? I know she wrote about women in general, but was there every anyone specific? All I can find on any source is shit about how it's "debated" if she really liked women. (Ik this is generally a meme only subreddit and i can take this down if you want, I just couldn't find a straight answer anywhere)
weave!
so I can look at my dress
and find I've made it
so that you,
against my skin
are as much myself
as my lungs
and
soft
like ashes.
everyone loves in riddles:
I give you to my hands
and they turn yours into feet
it's the only way to dance;
in patterns
that come in steps
to rhythms shared by
two
who ache just for a melody.
i know a thousand ways to ignite
one more yet to burn
and one more yet to turn
carbon fiber into wool
dreams into minds
and
myself into you.
weave!
until you forget your hands
weave!
and never find them again.
but oh sweet mother,
I cannot weave no more
I have tied my fingers to knots
and my heart to a chain
I have tried way too long
to not leave it in shame
so I wear you instead
and then I carry you to bed
and if no one ever looks too close
It will be a perfect thing
where no one ever came to admit
how I ought to
unravel the fabric
and try to forgive myself for it.
weave!
weave!
weave!
for I need a new dress
and your image is fibre to be made.
I'm in a group chat with a bunch of straight people and 3 queer folks (including myself). We're all long time friends, and after living together for some time, the other two queer folks entered into a relationship last year (yay!). They're now comfortable enough in the relationship to let the friend group know, and have been dropping subtle hints to see how people would react.
None of the straights have picked up on it. They make roommate jokes, one of the two's nickname in the chat is currently "Secret Girlfriend" and I have even linked them to this very subreddit. We're taking bets on how long it takes them.
None of us have high hopes.
TLDR: roommates became Roommates and none of our straight friends have figured it out.
Hi guys! Hope dnd goes well Sunday!
