Essential Romanian Literature

If you were learning English and coming to the US, I might suggest that you read *The Old Man and the Sea* by Ernest Hemingway or *Tom Sawyer* by Mark Twain or *The Great Gatsby* by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

What suggestions do you have for someone learning Romanian? Beginner literature is good, but I'm also looking for some hard literature to aspire to, something that really captures an important element of a zeitgeist or something. I don't know anything about Romanian or Moldovan literature, to be honest; what movements are there? Who are the great writers?

Any recommendations for more recent literature on Romanian (political) history during the Interwar period? (English/German)

Most available books are monographs published between the 1920s and 1970s by Romanian authors later translated into English, which all echo a strong state-approved communist version of history and aren't all that useful as secondary literature. I know there are several anthologies dealing with (eastern) european countries and the collapse of their political systems (mostly), but unsure which have decent material on Romania in particular.

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Gymnastics History Flashback: Zmeskal/Boginskaya feud

Before 1996 the US media was pretty relentless in painting Svetlana Boginskaya as a villain even before the 1991 World Championships. At the 1990 Goodwill Games the American media did not take kindly to the Soviet Galiaving of Tatiana Lysenko to put Boginskaya into the all around after she fell of bars in the team compulsories. Shortly there after ABC's entire coverage of the 1990 World Cup Final is about how Boginskaya was old and washed up and losing to her teammate Natalia Kalinina in the Goodwill Games must mean she should go to the old folks home at the advanced old woman age of 17 years old.

As an aside that 1990 World Cup Final includes the gloriously bizarre statement by Bart Conner that the Romanian team did badly at the Goodwill Games, a competition they didn't send a team. He and Kathy Johnson-Clarke also describe the Goodwill Games incident incorrectly which is bizarre because they were both there. The claim is that the fall on bars lead to her loss in the all around. Boginskaya took silver in the all around. It was Zmeskal who had a bars fall in the all around and finished low far outside of the medals.

So entering into the 1991 World Championships the US media was primed for certain narratives about Boginskaya and we have this glorious article from the Chicago Tribune:

-----

Soviet Star, Zmeskal in Snubbing Controversy

September 16, 1991

INDIANAPOLIS β€” It was impossible to know everything that was on Svetlana Boguinskaia`s mind-disapppointment [sic], bitterness, retaliation-when the Soviet gymnast snubbed Kim Zmeskal of the U.S. during an awards ceremony at the World Gymnastics Championships Sunday afternoon.

Whatever it was and whether Zmeskal started it with a similar snub Saturday night, only the principals know. And they were saying little. ''The night before, Kim did not shake my hand,'' Boguinskaia said when encountered near the arena, four hours after Sunday`s competition. Zmeskal was reluctant to talk about the incident, which happened in the awards for floor exercise, in which Zmeskal was third and Boguinskaia seventh. It was seen by nearly all 12,790 people in the Hoosier Dome, which immediately echoed with whistles and boos.

I've researched the afterlife for nearly 10 years. I am convinced that Reptilian beings are REAL and that the tunnel of light that people see when they die is a trap.

Introduction

For the last 10 years, I have been researching the nature of our reality, who or what controls our society from the shadows, and more importantly what actually happens when the physical body dies and the soul leaves the body. Do we go to heaven? Do we go to hell? Do we just cease to exist? Is there a God that takes care of us? Once you begin to realize what's actually going on and how deep the rabbit hole really goes, you will never see the world in the same way so buckle up and get ready, this is not going to be easy to swallow for most people. The whole point of this post is not to frighten you, but to present you the conclusions that I've come to in regards to what actually happens when our physical bodies die after having done what feels like endless research from every angle possible.

I have thoroughly investigated near death experiences, out-of-body experiences, astral projection experiences, past life regression hypnosis sessions, remote viewing data, gnosticism, ancient texts and more. All these different ways/methodologies of researching lead to the same conclusions and because of that, I am now convinced that Earth is a prison planet and a massive farm used by various parasitic entities who are using us and have been using us as energetic food for what appears to be a very long time. I will share plenty of evidence from different sources and perspectives to make you understand how I connected all these dots and why I came to these conclusions. I promise you that the deeper you research this stuff the more you will begin to realize that this is extremely real, important, and it's possibly affecting every single one of us. All I'm asking you is to keep an open mind and to analyze the evidence yourself. This is the result of years and years of painstakingly researching, connecting dots, and thinking outside the box. What you're about to read is just a summarization of my research.

Canadian Duployan Systems - also (BONUS!) Multilingual Duployans for your library, pars secunda! (Latin, Italian, Danish, Arabic, Armenian, German, Romanian, French, and English)

Over the course of my (very thorough) research, I have come to realise that no country has provided more, and more varied, systems of Duployan shorthand than has the Dominion of Canada. Having been born in that country and raised there partially, I am beaming with pride. (Many of the links in this write-up have never been seen before so please do click on them!)

Starting in the east of the country, in British Columbia, so much ink has been spilled about Le Jeune's Wawa method (for English, Latin, and Chinook Wawa) including his own account of its invention that I won't go into much detail except to reiterate two facts: 1) It provides perhaps the best introduction into the wild and woolly world of DuployΓ© for a total beginner (as Le Jeune intended), and 2) It was the original impetus for getting Duployan steno put into Unicode so that it may be written directly by computer. This is a big fucking deal.

Moving on to central Canada, Toronto (Leafs suck!), the city of my birth and current residence (thank you omicron) to be exact, where Harold J. Russell in 1954 developed and published 7 Lessons to Shorthand. This is a good example of a "modern" shorthand every bit as good as those developed in MontrΓ©al (to the east), and hoo, boy, the story there is complicated. Of course, MontrΓ©al is a bilingual city with a strong French influence (guess where DuployΓ© was from), it's Canada's business-and-financial capital, and if there's anything that fosters the rapid growth of tachygraphy, it's a confluence of business, finance, and law.

Firstly, there is the method of Joseph Amable Manseau. In the 19th century, he devised a straightforward adaptation of the French DuployΓ© intΓ©grale to English, with few briefs. Manseau was a linguist and aimed to create an easily-learned Anglo-French phonetic alphabet for essentially the same reason as we use the IPA to-day (but restricted to English and French): to record faithfully, on paper, the sounds made by the mouth in speech, just as Edison was researching this same idea on phonographic records.

Then, there is Albert Navarre's take, which isn't a Canadian mode of DuployΓ© at all. It was imported into the Province of QuΓ©bec from France (and is a straight-up clone of AbbΓ© DuployΓ©'s elementary methodβ€”not even a very good one). **This is a probl

On the Great Zionist Food Heist: what the Israeli cuisine is, what it isn't, and what it should be

If I had to pick one topic in the I/P conflict that I'm obsessed with, it's the Israeli cuisine, and the heated opposition to it from the Arab world. It's not very hard to find examples of what I'm talking about. From frequent discussions on Palestinian subreddits, to op-eds in The Washington Post, public Twitter-storms, like the one after Rachel Ray dared to call various Arab foods "Israeli food", that James Zogby described as a "cultural genocide". Even borderline-international incidents, like the infamous Hummus War between Israel and Lebanon. Hell, look up literally anything that mentions Israeli food online, and go to the comment section. You'll see at least one comment, getting incredibly upset over the use of that term.

This by itself isn't particularly interesting in the context of the I/P conflict. What's interesting is, that unlike most other issues in the conflict, the Arab position is driven not by legitimate ideological differences with the Israeli position, but by a misunderstanding of that position. How the Israelis view the "Israeli cuisine", what that cuisine contains, and what they claim about it.

It seems that the moment someone does understand the issue, he has a far greater trouble expressing the problem he has with Israeli cuisine, and what Israelis should or shouldn't do about it. Even Reem Kassis, the author of the aforementioned Washington Post op-ed, and the most nationalist cookbook I've read, sounds far more nuanced in the Zoom roundtable on the same topic, just a few months later. She's far more willing to accept the idea of an Israeli cuisine, calls the Israeli adoption of hummus and falafel is now in the legitimate realm of "cultural diffusion", and the main the she wants is "credit", and for Israelis to start using the phrase "Palestinian cuisine". This, mind you, is from a woman that wrote th

I found the journal of a scientist who worked in The United People's Institute of Science. He has been privy to some disturbing research.

II β€” III β€” IV β€” V β€” VI

November 5th 1987

The coffee here tastes like gutter water and I caught a nasty breed of bedbugs on the train β€” but I have arrived. Tomorrow is my first day at the institute.

I have never been an organized man and the excitement of the sudden move did not help. There is a variety of objects that I had forgotten to pack; one of them being my journal. The terms of employment at the institute forbid the keeping of any unauthorized written record, but that ban surely doesn’t extend to private literature. I have no intention of ever publishing anything in this journal. My only aim is self-reflection so that I can wholeheartedly commit the rest of my mind to the research I have been summoned for.

I have few illusions about privacy in my line of work. My luggage and body were thoroughly searched on arrival and surely the institute has spooks that will search through my room on a regular basis, but I think I have found a spot that even the most curious of KGB agents wouldn’t stumble upon. Here’s to hoping that my hypotheses about the intelligence of the institute’s muscle are correct.

There isn’t much to write about the initial impression of the locale. I may have spent three days on a train to get here, but all places under the Union’s sphere of influence are the same β€” cement, factories and an underlying sense of dread. The people here just use a harder form of liquor to cope with reality than back home.

When I arrived at the hotel I saw one of my future coworkers in the lobby. The man had dropped a couple kilos and his hair had turned grey, but I recognized him immediately: Dr. Markarov, Romanian biologist specializing in tissue regeneration. I had met him a couple years prior at a conference β€” friendly fellow, great sense of humor.

The man that sat in the lobby of the Rusalka tonight, however, didn’t seem to be in the mood for jokes. As soon as he noticed me he looked away. The whole time that I was dealing with the front de

Anyone here up to chat?

ΠŸΡ€ΠΈΠ²Π΅Ρ‚! (:

A little bit of info - I'm a 20 y/o girl and I really love the Russian language. I've had a lot of back and forths with it. I picked it up and put it down several times and every time it manages to draw me back in.

It's the only language that has done that and the one that seems most achievable to me.

I realised that part of the reason why I lost interest was because I didn't really have a reason to use it everyday as I do english. As much as I love it, it's hard to hold onto when I'm not getting any practice.

That brings me to my question. Would anyone here want to chat?

I don't want it to come across as just a study exercise, I'm genuinely interested in forming friendships and learning more about the country and the person. A chill conversation!

Things to note - I am pretty much a beginner. I told myself to wait until I had more of a stable ground but I know myself well enough to say that if I treated this with the: "oh, I'll do it later" mindset, I will most likely repeat the same vicious cycle over and over again. So I hope you can be patient with me!

I am pretty anxious. I know actually speaking the language is really important but I am a ball of anxiety when it comes to talking to people I've never interracted with before, let alone in a language I don't really use. So texting is the route here 100%

Edit: I wasn't sure if this was the right subreddit for this but it's the only one I could think of. If there's a better place for this then, please, let me know!

Edit 2: Someone pointed out to me that putting some interests here is a good idea!

I'm really into games (Dark Souls, Bloodborne, tf2, hollow knight, don't starve, etc) and movies. I listen to pretty much all sorts of music and am always looking for new songs.

I love creepy stuff. Horror movies, documentaries and unsettling videos/args. I binge channels like Nexpo, Nick Crowley, Mamamax and SoG.

I have a soft spot for Eldritch horror in particular. Last book I read was The King in Yellow and I loved it. (I recommend it as well)

I'm a cat person and I am currently in college studying American literature and history. I also speak Romanian (native).

Really don't know how to feel about all of this :(

Hello, everyone! I really need some serious advice.

So, a little backstory: I am a 33 years old transgender woman, I was born in a small Romanian mountain village to a teen mom (14 years old) & a dad 10 years older than my mom (24 years old). My mom has always resented and despised me for ruining her "reputation" and that it was because of me that she was "forced" to marry and stay with my abusive dad (he was an alcoholic and used to beat both my mom and me) - because back then divorce *especially in rural Romania* was very looked down upon. I had an absolutely awful childhood, starting to have suicidal thoughts at the age of 8. My maternal grandparents disowned my mom immediately after she got pregnant and my paternal grandparents absolutely hated me for being a "sissy", "feminine boy", "cry baby", etc., so I literally had nowhere to escape to as a kid. I got beaten, bullied, made fun of by basically everyone around: other village kids, other villagers, my parents, my grandparents, my school teachers / classmates. I was forced to start helping my parents around the house since the age of 7, forced to start helping them around the farm (basically adult work) since the age of 10 (I was in 5th grade) and got my first "official" paid job at the age of 13. So I had to grow up very fast. I only ever had girl friends growing up (which intensified the bullying / harassment I was receiving). When my girl friends entered puberty, I was so jealous and I wanted to experience the same things so bad... but obviously that didn't happen (this was the first time I ever felt strong gender dysphoria). At 14 I moved to my maternal aunt's house in the nearby city to attend high school. Through all of my high school years I worked part time during the school year (Monday - Sunday) and full time during the summer to support myself 'cause my aunt was a vile woman that didn't even give me food for free. If my parents would forget to pay her my "monthly rent" for one day she would force me to sleep outside until she got her money, and so many more horrifying things. I never complained to my parents about all of this 'cause at least while staying there I wasn't getting beaten (though I was getting verbally abused). I tried to commit suicide at the age of 16 by swallowing a bunch of pills but fortunately (back then I used to think "unfortunately" though) I woke up in the hospital. The nurses were so insensitive to me & when I got home it was the first and only time I eve
