tl;dr: what's the best way for a driven and accomplished developer with limited "free time" to gain a foothold into the world of distributed systems?

I just got rejected, for the second time in a year, from my "dream job". This was at a tiny stealth mode startup, doing incredibly interesting and cutting edge distributed systems work. My former manager joined there as their first engineering hire. He vouched and advocated for me, but that hasn't been enough to meet their hiring bar. Most current employees are extremely accomplished and have top level Apache projects to their name, so this isn't really a big surprise.

I'll get over the short term sting of rejection eventually, but this episode did uncover an uncomfortable truth that I'm only now grappling with. The space I want to be in (distributed systems) is not one where I've invested my time thus far. And I'm not sure how to course correct now.

Earlier in my career, I seemed to think that simply working hard and doing an awesome job would be enough to generally keep open any door I might want to go through. So that's how I proceeded: focusing on making a big impact at each place I worked. Every time I left a job, my colleagues and manager(s) tried to move mountains to get me to stay (often by asking me to "invent my own role").

However, I can see now that this perspective was naive and misguided. It took me a while to move into "pure tech", which is probably a minimum prerequisite to doing this sort of thing. I had a round of interviews late last year at many of the big FAANG places, and also a few different database companies. Everything went well, for the most part, but I was rejected in each case for one reason or another, save one (wherein the interviews went "perfectly", but they still went with someone more experienced).

At this point, I don't know how to recover and get myself on track to gain the necessary experience to break in. I'm working full time in the data analytics space, which is still interesting and challenging in its own way. I also have a family with young children, tons of house projects that I've neglected for years, etc. By the end of the day, I'm burned out enough that even if I miraculously found some time, I wouldn't really have the mental energy to work on something.

Hey folks. I probably answered my own question but this week my touch screen won't reorient when rotating, touch isn't working and it's slow to switfch between EVF and Monitor.

I have removed my SD card, cleaned the eye sensor and tried a few lenses with no luck. The next step is a factor reset but I am thinking that it is a hardware issue related to the ribbon cables on the monitor. I haven't physically damaged the rotation hardware in any way that I can tell. Maybe the ribbon cable is loose? Does anyone think a firmware reset has any chance of solving this?

EDIT: Did a factory reset and the problem persists...now I'll have to reset all my custom settings on top of dealing with the broken screen. (yay!)

This has been a bug for years now, it so bloody annoying. Please fix it.

Hey folks. In thrill of the fight, the game menu tends to in part appear outside my guardian, making it unpractical to tap there with my virtual boxing gloves ... I notice the game doesn't seem to respond to the position of the menus in the home menu of the VR, which I know how to change. I guess this kind of problem could happen in other games too. Any idea on how to fix? My space is about a x meters wide by 4 meters long btw if that can help.

Hi All, I am using a Mi Sphere and would like to reorient the starting angle of my 360 video. I dont do Pro work so I would like to find a free tool for the job.

My current Workflow is as follows:

1. Download Video .MP4 file in double fisheye format directly from microsd card to a Windows PC

2. I use a Mi Sphere Windows App to convert the video to equirectangular format. Unfortunately, I cant find options to reorient the angle.

I downloaded the free version DaVinci Resolve 17 but found that the PanoMap option is not available in the free version.

I only plan to post on Facebook but I cant seem to do it there during posting either.

Would appreciate any recommnedations. Thanks!
