A list of puns related to "Rational Varieties"
>We may go through life without suspecting their existence; but apply the requisite stimulus, and at a touch they are there in all their completeness, definite types of mentality which probably somewhere have their field of application and adaptation. No account of the universe in its totality can be final which leaves these other forms of consciousness quite disregarded. How to regard them is the question โ for they are so discontinuous with ordinary consciousness. Yet they may determine attitudes though they cannot furnish formulas, and open a region though they fail to give a map. At any rate, they forbid a premature closing of our accounts with reality.
>
>William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902)
I think that dismissing altered states of consciousness entirely is equally irrational as treating these experiences as objectively real. The subject is much more complex as was noted by William James, 'father of American psychology', over a hundred years ago. In another lecture published in this book, James reflects:
>The whole drift of my education goes to persuade me that the world of our present consciousness is only one out of many worlds of consciousness that exist, and that those other worlds must contain experiences which have a meaning for our life also...
What meaning may altered states, such as the psychedelic experience, possess for our lives? The spectacular renaissance in psychedelic research over the past ten years has clarified this issue greatly. The fact that studies have concluded that psychedelic experience improves the quality of life in patients with terminal cancer is now well known (and has been replicated numerously), however further inquiry into precisely why this is the case is required.
William James proposed four characteristics of religious experience which I feel may shed light on the therapeutic value of the phenomenology of psychedelic experience:
I wan't a place where reasonable discussion can occur, and the focus is on being civil and understanding other people's points. Ideally a place where controversial views aren't frowned upon, and posts are judged based on how well they present their view, and acknowledge opposing views, not just opinion.
Irrespective of the results of Sunday's game, I firmly believe we managed to pull off a spectacularly successful tank season this year.
I'm not really sure what else you could expect from a tank season, assuming rational expectations.
Three years ago, I discovered the concept of FIRE which opened my eyes to the possibility of financial independence. While I was not naรฏve to the basics of personal finance, there were clearly opportunities for improvement and so I decided to apply myself to making changes. At the end of 2019, I started a tradition of completing an annual summary write-up which I found to be a useful tool for reflection and planning. In recognition of this yearโs financial milestone, this write-up will combine the usual annual summary with additional detail about the journey to get to this point.

In a typical faschion for the sub, the comments are a parade of transphobia and hatred against Elliot Page for no real reason besides him being a trans man:
Productions pandering to trans folks don't generate all that much revenue
[According to this article (Dec 1, 2020) there are no plans to recast Vayna in Umbrella Academy and no plans to change the gender of the character to male. So Elliot Page will be playing the same female character. According to that article the queer community pushed back on the recasting of the role because they say transgender people can play both queer and CIS roles. Looking forward to the hilarious shitstorm on Twitter when people are pissed off that she's still playing a female character on the show next season. People are going to be mad that she's playing a female character after she transitioned but they also don't want the role recasted to get a female actor. Choose one. My first post to Reddit was what I called a Cultural Due Diligence, an attempt to demystify the tactics of shills and the psychology of financial terrorists in order to help Apes through a rocky period in our history. I was inspired to write that post, along with the original Wargame Theory, by the excellence of Apes, as well as the need to shift Ape consciousness from the manipulations of the OG sub into a diamond-handed cohort that could stand against all the worldโs media, shills, scammers, and financial institutions.
Almost a year on and weโre doing pretty good, wouldnโt you say?

Our community is seven times larger than it was, and Apes have forged their own investment thesis through the dedication of our wrinklebrained DD researchers and authors. If you missed everything and everyone that led us here, check out my guide to the first seven months of DD that forged our diamond hands. We wouldnโt be here without them.
Lately, however, Iโve witnessed events that inspired me to once again offer a Cultural Due Diligence, this time a comprehensive look at the psychology of scams. Back in the spring we discovered COINTELPRO, which gave us a method for recognizing and battling bad actors and their attacks on our community. However, the terms they gave us - shills, FUD, forum sliding, etc. โ have become a little long in the tooth and/or corrupted over time. Scammers never stop adapting and co-opting our culture to their criminal ends, and so we must keep evolving and adapting our defenses as well.
By the end of this post, you will have a PhD in scam detection and defense.

This post is scam-agnostic, meaning itโs not targeted at any of the scams currently being run against Apes. This is a distillation of information fro

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Tonight's debate on Fanatiq's panel has actually made me feel so doomed on the state of this pandemic, how it will play out and how it could have ended so long ago. These were just some of the reasons why.
When Destiny challenged gootecks to answer the question regarding whether drink driving should be illegal, both gootecks and Geisha were completely unable to engage with the question. When pushed on it, the most common answer was that drink driving was already illegal so this was not analogous, followed by handwaving about how 'it's just different'. The stark hypocrisy of the two positions is so obvious that it hurts.
I'm sure that many people have heard of Hanlon's razor [1] but this instance seems to far gone for me to be able afford the charitability of their potential ignorance.
At a point during the panel, gootecks claimed that by using DuckDuckGo you can return wildly different results compared to what you would return via a Google search. Destiny spoke about how this isn't as true as he implies it to be.
At one point in my life, I spent a period of time obsessing over what search engine and browser I was using. Due to this, I learned a decent amount about how DuckDuckGo works and how it compares to Google. The biggest variation between the two is actually how the results are sourced. It is well known that Google will advertise within their results, as does DuckDuckGo [2]. Where they differ: the sources. The main thing is that it doesn't source from Google itself. However, it does source from 400 other sources, including but not limited to Bing, crowdsourced sites like Wikipedia, and their own crawler DuckDuckBot [3]. All of this is to say that in totality, DuckDuckGo is not providing the user with the hidden archives of the internet, just the internet with a little less tracking.
Another point that was a cause for concern was when gootecks spoke about how he understands the position of pro-vaxxers but he doesn't subscribe to it because he sees beyond just one perspective. This is the same level of justification used by religion, 'you can't understand it because you don't know'. Make no bones about it, the anti-vax movement is pseudo-religious in nature. A steadfast inability to critique your own positions and introspect upon them. This is worrying specifically because of the fact that someone who is like this will never be moved by anything because they can always default back to calling you

๐ What is Pyrrho DeFI looking to do?
Pyrrho DeFi is a project that seeks to reduce fraud in decentralized finance by vetting decentralized finance (DeFi) projects, encouraging transparency, and offering an online space for DeFi developers, users, and investors to discuss projects without the psychological manipulation of online tribal communities that use the pejorative term โfudโ (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) to attack anyone who expresses skepticism about a particular project. Pyrrho Defi intends to encourage better assessments of DeFi projects by providing accurate information and a forum for rational discourse. It will do this by creating a searchable list of vetted DeFi projects, providing services to developers whose project needs improvement to meet listing requirements, the use of โPyrrhoDropsโ airdrops to diversify PYO holderโs wallets with vetted projects and implementing an innovative social platform that is regulated through micropayments of Pyrrho Token. The social platform will use a reward/penalty system which allows users to earn PYO for providing quality content, goods or services.

Like most film fans I enjoy reading a lot of reviews not just for finding a worthwhile movie to watch but also to gain some insight and look into different perspectives on films that I find interesting. I especially like reading reviews of films from the past to see how assessments back then measure up to how the film is viewed right now and to see if similar assessments of the directors of those films and predictions regarding their careers have aged well. We all know about how certain movies like The Thing or Blade Runner were poorly received during their time only to become highly influential movies within their genre later on but itโs even more fascinating to read exactly why these movies were panned and what lead to their reassessment. So with that in mind, I would like to talk about 5 reviews that I found very fun to read with the benefit of hindsight.
Andrew Sarris is considered a titan in film criticism. Credited with popularising the auteur theory in the United States, Sarris wrote the highly influential book The American Cinema: Directors and Directions 1929โ1968 in which he assessed various films and directors of the sound era up to that point. One of the most fascinating parts of his book is this excerpt on Francis Ford Coppola.
>Francis Ford Coppola is probably the first reasonably talented and sensibly adaptable directorial talent to emerge from a University curriculum in film-making. Youโre A Big Boy Now seemed remarkably eclectic even under the circumstances. If the direction of Nichols on The Graduate has an edge on Coppolaโs for Big Boy, it is that Nichols borrows only from good movies whereas Coppola occasionally borrows from bad ones. Curiously, Coppola seems infinitely more merciful to his grotesques than does-anything-for-an-effect Nichols. Coppola may be heard from more decisively in the future.
To give you some context, Mike Nichols had just come off two back-to-back critical and commercial megahits in Whoโs Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and The Graduate both of which combined had 20 Oscar nominations and 6 wins including one best director win for Mike Nichols. While on the other hand the films Coppola had made at that point werenโt particularly successful critically or commercially and

I don't know how much my significantly lowered expectations or the fact that I got it for a mere $4 during the recent Steam holiday sale play into it, but I absolutely adored this title. It may just be the post-game glow, but this game did a lot of things right in my experience. So much so that I'd place is among Dragon Age - Origins and Mass Effect 2 as my favorite BioWare RPGs. I even enjoyed it more than I did Witcher 3, somehow, and I loved that game. I just don't recall feeling this enamored with it when all was said and done (I still haven't had a chance to play through the expansions though). Those are some big shoes to fill, so let me get into it...
###[WARNING: LONG POST]
Firstly, full disclosure: I'm a somewhat sensitive person who can be swayed through more aesthetic, less concrete things. Good to be aware of that, I guess, but I often find myself liking things that many others did not because it happened to strike a particular nerve within me. It's sometimes hard to place exactly what a piece of media touched, but it often manifests in me preferring games like Dragon Age 2 over ones like Dragon Age Inquisition despite all of it's technical shortcomings in comparison.
I say this because I know Andromeda probably won't hit the same notes with some people, and that's totally fine. Things as seemingly simple as stirring music, beautiful vistas, compelling themes, etc., can seduce me to fall in love with a game, and Andromeda was not exception in these categories. And of course, the characters, Mass Effect โ and BioWare games in general โ are built foremost on characters, and Andromeda was certainly no slouch in this respect. From the grandpa-krogan Drack to the mysterious yet open book Jaal, Andromeda had loads of well written, well developed characters. I'm not going to pretend that the writing was perfect, but again, it struck a chord with me. Take what you will from that.
Most of this will probably end up focusing on the characters though, so I'll set aside that discussion for later. One last acknowledgement: I really appreciated the sense of novelty and exploration this game had to offer. I'm one of those people who legitimately enjoys just roaming the procedurally generated planets of No Man's Sky and scanning things, and this game has shades of that experience as well. It's a lot more directed, obviously, but it manages to toe the line pretty well between large, unexplored open worlds and a

If you feel this way, you should know that you are not alone and most of us in this community can relate to your pain. This can be supported by numerous recent posts and comments of their losing positions from fellow TLRY members.
Losses are widespread but the question comes down to what or who is to blame for this loss?
We could say that it is hedge funds and other institutional traders who utilize a variety of techniques and short selling strategies to manipulate TLRY stock lower. That does make sense and there are numerous DD posts in this Sub along with many others on other stocks as well that show this. After all, per the recent earnings releases of the top Banks on Wall Street, a large proportion of their record breaking profits comes from "Trading Operations."

https://www.reddit.com/r/TLRY/comments/qwspc5/barclays_downgrade_in_more_detail/
We could also argue that the stock is down due to Tilray's own company share dilution. Ever since the merger of TLRY and APHA, CEO Irwin Simon's been on a roll. From buying convertible bonds of an American MSO to buying liquor and beer companies. This money has to come from somewhere right?
https://mjbizdaily.com/canadian-marijuana-company-tilray-acquires-colorados-breckenridge-distillery/
I want to emphasize that Tilray is not mindlessly diluting it's shares as a few people here were suggesting. Per the fine print, the company will only dilute its shares in an event of an Acquisition or to fight off a hostile takeover event (eg. Philip Morris taking advantage of TLRY's low price and goes full savage).
The concept behind this dilution strategy is that because the acquired companies bring in extra cash flows, then it should justify a higher valuation of TLRY stock thus balancing out the extra shares in the market place. This is actually supported if valuation analysis utilizes the valuati

Religion is often one of the most misunderstood things -often mistakenly seen as a pursuit for God, religion is not a theoretical unselfish endeavor, as it is a- colliding of selfish wishes, fear and community.
Many countries have and are currently seeing a rapid change in demographics(eg Nepal -Christianity went from 1%-10% within 2010-2020 ,South Korea Christianity went from 1%-30% within 3 decades ,Africa christianity went from 1% to 50% within a century -wiping out the indigenous religions)- while many for time immemorial seem to be in a stage of steady continuity - unchanged by outside forces ( Afghanistan has seen a negligible change despite foreign occupation and domination for more than 2 decades, Poland despite the communist regime has seen Church attendance and religiosity stay more or less the same throughout its domination, Even russia for that matter did not see a decline in religiosity even during the period of the Soviet Republic).
India too is seeing a rapidly changing population with large numbers adopting christianity, sponsored in part by the excessive funding coming in through the FCRA($2-3 billion every year). Arunachal Pradesh has gone from 1%-30% within 3 decades 1981-2011, Kanyakumari district has gone to close to 50% within a few decades. Similarly other states such as Andhra Pradesh have gone to 20%(although currently not accounted for by census data, Tamil Nadu has gone to 10%
While the factors that lead to religious change and causing religious change are often more clearly understood - a partitioned society and society in flux, monetary power to convince, physical and political power to coerce, and a radical clergy and link to society to enforce, the factors that strengthen continuity are often slightly less well understood.
Looking at the countries that have maintained a continuity in religion despite odds we can come up with certain factors that can be used to enhance continuity.
1)Linking of religion with identity - not with political party but with identity- despite religion not being a

Iโd consider myself in the group of users that have greatly enjoyed it despite some issues. Thereโs been, however, a lot of vocal anger about where Season 2 got things wrong. Like four of you may know me from popping around here, most of ya probably don't, but I write threads that are way too long sometimes despite my nobody status, because I love to write.
I want to write a retrospective of the Season and offer up a counterpoint to the anger to discuss where CoW actually exceeds, and to be clear, where it really needs improvement. Itโs my hope to start constructive discussion, but I do have my own opinions in there too! To be as clear as possible, itโs my favorite game-mode, and some of the comparisons to DV are disingenuous for what the mode is.
One last big disclaimer: I talk too much, so this is quite the long post. Get ready!
>Dark Visions versus CoW.
The current Dark Visions meta prioritizes damage above all else. An occasional fight might require immunity to one or more statuses, and a rare one-off might have a few hits of non-elemental damage, but in general, DV has crystallized into a formula; nullify all damage and cram as many damage dealers as humanly possible to cap damage.
As a result of this, entire roles have died compared to when we got a regular schedule of trials that challenged us in a completely different way. Since nothing can actually damage your party to preserve score, tanks are all interchangeable based on niche utility, supports are elemental clones that only offer damage amplification, and whatโs a healer? Why would I need mitigations, or MP, or, wellโฆ anything? So Bliss, you may ask; why are you talking about Dark Visions so much if this is a Clash of Wills post? The thing is, Clash of Wills was clearly designed to be what Dark Visions is NOT. More on this below but among the wide variety of feedback suggestions, thereโs been a bit of a vocal crowd saying that Clash of Wills should be easy to one-shot like Dark-Visions, which I think would be the death knell for Clash.
>Clash of Wills - Design Philosophy
From itโs very pitch in an update video, Clash of Wills has made clear what it aims to be. But let me be clear: observing a product prior to its release and forming expectations from how it's advertised, and then holding the corporation accountable for the standard that THEY set when it's clearly not met, doesn't equate to toxicity. Now does that mean that others can't have fun with this game? No. Does that mean that 2042 is completely unforgivable and an affront on society? Also no. Nevertheless, it doesn't get the company off the hook simply because a minority of customers enjoy the product with its flaws, nor does it give said company the grounds to hyper-focus on a handful of legitimately deranged viewpoints and pretend that that's the collective community viewpoint.
Corporations have increasingly gotten reliant with this scapegoating tactic in recent years, more so than any other point in the past from my recollection. If a bad game, movie, or TV series is released, you'll absolutely never see a large corporation apologize, or management own up to mishandling a product (and I'm more than welcome to be proven wrong). It's always "the customer is wrong, the userbase is toxic, the consumer doesn't know what they're talking about" wrapped in a barrage of propaganda designed to emotionally manipulate the public such that they find no fault with the corporation in question.
This has been the running theme in America in a variety of ways, but it's especially been growing more apparent in recent history. Our relationship with corporate industries has been an abusive one for the last century where the consumer is always wrong and can't be justifiably upset or rationally explain why a product is deceptively marketed.
"We know more than you, your judgement isn't to be trusted, and anyone who leverages criticism against our product is a rabid fanatic who doesn't understand what they buy."
Don't fall for the propaganda or internalize it. If you were marketed a product and it failed the expectations that were set, you have a right to complain until it's fixed. Because if you DON'T complain, the standard is set that a corporation doesn't have to give a shit about quality at all because they'll make their mone

What we eat is a huge part of who we are, who weโve been, and what we experience as we encounter the new. In my 90 years, I have done my best to experience first hand the many, many ways that each denizen of the Forgotten Realms decides to break bread.
This is by no means a rule book, as if I am some sort of dictator of what is, and isnโt proper for a member of a race to do in the kitchen. Rather, it is a collection of observances in regards to commonalities and trends among members of the same race. While my own experience is obviously limited, and there are plenty of individuals I have yet to dine with and learn about, I would like to offer up what I have learned so far.
-Adelbert Boffin, Halfling Culinarian
First things first, as a disclaimer of all Culinary Ethnography entries, letโs set some caveats. Who are Elves? Am I including Half-Elves? Drow? All those of Elven lineage? All those of Elven parentage back to the Fae themselves? While I would like to eventually include more varied looks at the similarities and differences between all of these groups, for the purposes of this analysis, I will be looking at those Elves that live in, or near the Faewild in particular. As always, this is a look at some of the major trends I have seen occur. It is not a rulebook that one must follow to be a โproper Elfโ in the kitchen. Food is as much culture as it is history, geography, necessity, community, and personal freedom. With that out of the way, letโs give this culture a respectful look.
Living off the Land
To truly understand the cuisine of the Elves, it is important to first understand where their sustenance is derived from. While this maxim is true of all races, it holds even greater weight with Elves. Food culture is derived from the culmination of necessity and environment and the environment that most Elves live in is one of true bounty, allowing for a more โparticularโ palate. After all, it is much easier to only eat things that taste good, when starvation is not on the line. Not many races can claim the same abundance, leading to a rather unique culinary culture.
The first subject of note is that Elves do not take part in animal husbandry. From Dwarves, to Humans, to Orcs, you can see some sort of animal that is a mainstay in their diet in some form or another. As always, this is co

A bit of background on me, Iโm an amateour historian and am currently taking a bachelor in Religious Studies and hope to specialise in Islamic History as itโs something that really fascinates me, I started playing Paradox games when Sword of Islam came out to CK2, which drew me to try it and have loved them ever since.
two disclaimers 1) Iโll โproposeโ some gameplay changes but am not good at mechanics design and especially game balancing, so take them as more of a thought training experiment on the subject. Iโd love feedback and criticism if anyone has any. 2) I have so far mainly focused on early Islam, and on Ismaili Shiโism, which will become clear in these sections being more well fleshed out than the rest.
Iโd like to start out with a few Proโs and Conโs with the current system of religion in CK3:
Pros:
Cons:
It really does, I swear!
Author's Note:
Welcome back, everybody! This chapter ended up being over 9000 words long, so it's getting split up into two updates. Part 2 will be posted on Monday at the usual time.

Eighty minutes until the teleportation spell was ready.
Rob paced back and forth across an empty street on the outskirts of Elven territory. Ornโtol and Zamira were facing away from him, keeping their watchful eyes on Broadwaterโs empty streets. They didn't actually need to be on the lookout, as the Blightโs entry attempts were always heralded by a hideous sound that could be heard from one end of Deserter territory to another, but his pacing was making them nervous. Rob was aware of the effect it was having on them, but found that he couldnโt stop even if he wanted to. Sensory overload was pulling his limbs along like a puppeteer tugging at strings. The half-healed nerves in his arm were tingling, the Corruption within was burning, the sun was beating down on his face, and the anticipation of how the next few hours would play out was wreaking havoc on his mental state.
Something was going to happen. Something always happened.
The Blight tended to make entry attempts just a little away from the Deserters โ presumably to give its spawn time to mature โ but that left a wide area to cover, and it was unlikely that Robโs trio would be the first to defend against new incursions. His group was formed for the purpose of responding to entry attempts as they came, which is why it consisted of himself, Zamira, and Ornโtol, three of the highest-Dexterity members in the Deserters. Group B consisted of Keira, Taleya, and a Ranger named Harkin, who were situated on the opposite end of Deserter territory. Both of their groups were positioned to cover as much ground as possible. It was a strategy they'd implemented three days ago, and so far, it had worked like a charm. At least one group was always able to respond to an entry attempt in short order.
But โin short orderโ wasnโt โimmediatelyโ. Odds were that either some of the Rangers or some of the Fiends would be closer to any given entry attempt, and they couldnโt afford to wait for reinforcements. Not when leaving the Blightspawn to their own devices could result in unchecked mutating and multiplying. As a consequence, Rob had barely arrived in time to prevent casualties from occurring on two occasions now, and that was with his new boost in Dexterity. The way those situations could have played out were weighing on his

I am a female, and I was 23 at the time of this story. These events took place in 2010, and I finally thought it was time to share the story of the horrifying events I went through with the demon in the basement.
At the time, I had been on the lookout for a new place to live, as my roommate had a cat, and I could no longer deal with my allergies. When I moved in with her, I was living in a dingy motel room, so having a roommate in a proper house was a serious upgrade. I thought the cat wouldnโt be too much of an issue, but it was not to be. Being an animal lover, I could never even think about suggesting to someone to get rid of a beloved pet, so I opted to move out instead.
I had been searching for a new place for a couple of weeks when I came across an ad on Craigslist describing a room for rent on a waterfront property. It was surprisingly affordable, and I was very intrigued. There were no photos on the add but the address was pretty close by.
So, I took a drive over to the place to take a look and the property was beautiful. It definitely looked lived-in and well maintained. So I called the number on the ad later that afternoon to make an enquiry. This is when I first came across crazy Patty. At first, she seemed extremely friendly on the phone, we laughed and joked and got along very well. She said she would be delighted to meet me and to come around anytime to view the property and the room for rent.
So I made an appointment for the next day. I pulled up in the driveway and was greeted by Patty waving warmly at me from the front porch. She was a middle-aged women, in her 40โs, she had a kind of hippie-ish clothing style, she wore thick glasses and had long, frizzy brown hair. She was shorter than me by a couple of inches and she spoke in a kind of nasally, baby voice.
Now before I continue, I would like to give a little background on the women of my family. We are all gifted in the spiritual realm. The gift can be traced back to my great, great grandmother, who could read tea leaves. She was extremely gifted and did readings for her entire life, until one day when she finished her teaโฆand read her sonโs death.
Needless to say, she never read tea leaves again. Since then, the women on my mothers side have inherited some kind of special gift. Whether it is clairvoyance, clairsentience, or something of that nature. Funnily enough, no one since my great, great grandmother has had the ability to read tea leaves.
I was lucky, or unlucky, e

Here's are a couple of examples:
"4th gen vocals aren't as great as 3rd gen because I remember that one time Jongho couldn't hit B5 with ease, as told to me by my neighbour who is 11 years old and is a part her school choir. Don't get me wrong, I love ateez music, but Jongho should probably work on his vocals to impress me :/"
"All 4th gen music sounds the same. This can be attributed to how talentless self-producing groups are. My 2nd gen stan self is used to having big-name producers make their songs, which are miles ahead and don't sound so noisy all the time. I don't care for self-production. Disclaimer alert: I love bang chan's personality tho he's so great!!!"
