Radiation oncology?

Hey guys, me again. I have a question that I'm hoping someone might be able to answer.

I moved to a new city about 3 weeks after my orchiectomy so I am meeting my new oncologist for the first time on Friday. His office had me do some bloodwork last week and then called me this morning to let me know that they have scheduled me to meet a radiation oncologist as well. I'm wondering if this is normal or if it's because of the blood test results? I won't know the results until Friday. I've seen a lot of people here talking about chemo but I've barely seen radiation therapy mentioned at all. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Independence of QA & dosimetry for Radiation Oncology Systems

What do you think about this "Statement of Support" that the vendors of QA systems sent to many departments a few months ago?:

https://www.bhpa.eu/sites/default/files/2019-08/20190729%20Independent_QA_Scan_signed.pdf

They wanted support to press AAPM, ASTRO, ESTRO, IAEA etc to endorse a recommendation saying that QA and dosimetry systems must be independent from the treatment machine manufacturer. I don't know if they had any success.

In my opinion it is of course necessary to have some independent system available, although it is not necessary that all the QA is performed with it. For example it could be acceptable to use a system integrated in the treatment machine and developed by the same manufacturer for daily machine QA or for invivo dosimetry as long as it uses detectors or sensors different from the ones controllng the linac during the treatment delivery, and check the accuracy of this system probably on a monthly basis with an independent system.

They mention the importance of interoperability and independent standards but this contrasts with the little interest of most manufacturers of QA systems to provide interoperability among them: is it possible to export data from a device of manufacturer "A" to a software of manufacturer "B"? I think they are more interested in having "captive customers" (like the linac+OIS manufacturers, by the way). In the past industry made important efforts to develop standards (DICOM), now I feel we are in the opposite trend. Change my mind.

WEBINAR- Secondary dose verification - Speaker: Dr. Sotiri Stathakis, he is a professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiology University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio.

The new recommendations for independent dose verification of radiation treatment plans have created new challenges for physicists. How can we address these new challenges?

Dr. Sotiri Stathakis will will discuss what is required and recommended. He will use VERIQA as an example to explain which solutions provide the most benefit without burdening physicists' workflows.

Moreover, what can we learn from the additional data?

  • AAPM TG219 overview
  • Properties of a 3D dose verification software
  • Acceptance and commissioning of the software
  • Preliminary data at Mays Cancer Center by VERIQA

Is it possible to do radiation oncology as a DO student?

I've looked at the NRMP data, and it is not very friendly towards DO students. However I have an extensive background in oncology research and really loved rotating with a radiation oncologist. Should I even dream of this specialty?

[Residency] Radiation Oncology vs Nuclear Medicine?

I'm an IMG, recently graduated, and I got a scholarship offer from my med school to do either a radiation oncology or nuclear medicine residency in a nearby country (as neither of these specialties are available where I live). While I am excited to have been chosen for such an opportunity, I don't know a lot about either specialty. I've been researching them online, but I still thought it was worth asking what you all think? What do you think are the pros and cons of these two specialties?

Radiation Oncology RN’s, I have questions!

Hey all!

I am a RN in neuroscience (certified, 4 years experience) who has an interview for a position in a radiation oncology practice. I am curious about your experience in the area, and some information about the main nursing duties and responsibilities that are involved. I am both hopeful and unsure if this will be a good fit for me, but interested in the potential change!

Thanks for your time and help:)
