Hi! Guess the title explains my question. I know from my book that purines are salvaged in reactions with PRPP catalyzed by phosphoribosyl transferases. Is this also the case for pyrimidines?

We had a urinary crystal "scare" and our vet is recommending we switch to a low purine food. Anyone have any recommendations or advice?
When I was a kid we had a dalmatian get bladder stones and ultimately die due to them not being treated right. Fortunately, my dog doesn't quite have stones yet, just some "sandy residue" per the ultrasound we just had done. So I understand the risk/issues at play here, just looking for a food rec.
I had my first gout attack 5 years ago, after I entered ketosis for the first time. I've spent countless hours researching the triggers of gout because I do not want to take medication.
I've come to the point where I eat purine-containing foods without limit. Instead, I've cut out oxalate-containing foods, such as almonds, spinach, and chocolate. This tends to work, as I get flare-ups about once a year, but interestingly their severity has decreased over time.

Has anyone else experimented with a low oxalate, high purine diet for preventing flare-ups?
I have read here about the fantastic results people have had taking allopurinol and lowering their serum uric acid levels well within the normal range.
Several of them have then gone on to say "now I don't have to worry about what I eat anymore".
Is that true?
Assuming they continue to take allopurinol shouldn't they continue on a purine-restricted diet and follow the other gout-related dietary guidelines in order to help prevent gout flares from re-occurring?
I've noticed a gout-diabetes connection (I've had gout, I wouldn't recommend it). And digging into it, I think we may have another reason for people to go on a low carb diet (see below):

Hi everyone. 36 yo Female who is producing, at this point, one stone per year. After my 3rd kidney stone in 2020 resulted in needing to have it removed surgically, my urologist ordered a 24 hour urine analysis to see what was going on. Looks like I have hyperuricosuria and hypocitraturia. I am not on any medications, so it was determined I just don't make enough citrate due to genetic reasons. He prescribed a potassium citrate supplement, reminded me to keep up my fluids, and advised me to avoid foods high in purine. Well...I am also pretty overweight and if Google is to be believed, a lot of my "healthy" foods for weight loss are now off the table I guess. I am a little confused about what to avoid as it seems to be all over the place online. Oatmeal? Fish and shellfish? Nuts? Avocados? These are supposed to be superfoods and now I can't have them? Is anyone else on a low purine diet that could point me to some legit resources that you use? I just want to be sure I get this right. Thanks!

I just stumbled across this and felt it might interest those who like to do deep dives into the subject of purines. I did a search of the forum (always an adventure on Reddit) and didn't see the author's name in any posts, so I figured it was worth posting. It's a graduate student's thesis about reducing purines by washing food, but it also has a summary of a lot of aspects of purines and gout.

The book gives a source for the table of purine content, which is great because so many lists are unsourced. The information comes from Food Composition and Nutrition Tables, Sixth Edition 6th Edition, by Seigfried W. Souci. It's a textbook that costs $188. I'm going to see if I can find a copy in a library.
(Side note: you can see from the table on page 10 that beef sirloin is a lot lower in purines than white-meat chicken. I know beef seems to be a trigger for some people, but the widespread suggestion to eat chicken instead of beef isn't supported by this data.)
For the life of me, I couldnβt remember which nucleotides are classified as purines and pyrimidines. Hereβs a silly cute mnemonic I thought of for purines(Adenine and Guanine): βAriana Grande is the purest.β

For context the life in my planet uses GNA (glycol nucleic acid) Edit: I mean specifically substitutes for A-T/U and G-C
Quickly just curious what you guys generally think? They seem to have large overlaps in symptoms, the strangest one that I noticed was that with purine metabolism disorders you can have a reaction to aspirin, same as MCAS. Seems like the purine metabolism explains how MCAS reactions can be stored in body tissues for long periods.
I'm currently waiting on my uric acid test results, have had symptoms that fit with MCAS my whole life off and on. I'm a bit fascinated as I look into it by the overlap. Have any of you guys done a uric acid test?

My SO and I fell in love with a dog in our local shelter. She is just the kindest dog i have ever seen. She is a rescue from crete and unfortunately caught leishmaniasis there. We are thinking about adopting her but I want to be completely prepared for him.
Due to her illnesss she needs a diet thats low in purine. I have tried to find as much information as I can but it's kind of overwhelming... So I thought I'd ask here.
Does anyone have experiences in low purine diets? Do you recommend buying food or cooking at home ? How hard is it to keep up with it?

While I was searching for the amounts of purines/uric acid in a certain food I found these images. I loaded them into a album for others who might be interested.
The serving size for each of these foods seems to be 100g or 3.5 oz
