OP posts a racist meme PoliticalCompassMemes to FragileWhiteRedditor. Subreddit finds out OP also likes to box people into race and colour and have his own preconceptions of them.

Top comment- Its a racist two for one. They get to push Black people as thugs while trotting out Asians as a model minority all at the same time.

Drama begins when OP replies- Cool. Although every Vietnamese person I've know is pretty well-off and fits into the "hard work and education" stereotype that right-wingers try so hard to emphasize, so i think Vietnamese might get included too. OP likes to reference pop culture references- >schmidt_from_new_girl has entered the chat

Shaking loose old preconceptions and doubt: to question one's accepted "reality" and to experience doubt. The fine line that separates zen from gaslighting.

>Gaslighting involves two parties; the "gaslighter", who persistently puts forth a false narrative, and the "gaslighted", who struggles to maintain their individual autonomy. Typically, gaslighting is only effective when there is an unequal power dynamic. (Seniority, perceived expertise, perceived credibility, perceived record of success in a task.)

>Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation in which the abuser attempts to sow self-doubt and confusion in their victim's mind. Typically, gaslighters are seeking to gain power and control over the other person, by distorting reality and forcing them to question their own judgment and intuition.

>Tactics such as gaslighting are by sociopaths, narcissists, and manipulators to obtain power and control over their partners. Regardless if intention or not, gaslighting is manipulation and therefore emotional abuse.

Troll fishing as a recreational sport originally had positive connotations, even as a method of gathering information, but lately social media has identified some trolling tactics that are destructive to honest dialogue.

That zen characters are known to be ornery and to raise doubt, does it also mean that they are manipulative and abusive; inflict suffering?

Maybe the zen characters applied their skill selectively, not like a bulldozer clearing all in its path. IMO gaslighting is a power game, and is not relevant to zen. Zen is not a power play at all, in any way, IMO. Self would be adding and taking away, but zen is not motivated by this.

edit: Based on a kind suggestion in the comments below from u/ZenZenAgainZen I add the following which is from an earlier response within the comments.

Disclosure and transparency is what I propose, not a solution. See my statement in the comments section of this post:

>Ordinarily β€œdon’t feed the trolls” is good advice but in this case it seems to have a more specific lesson of skilled social media abuse for the r/zen community and the moderators, which has not yet been fully assimilated. I am not suggesting bans or censorship, but recommend Reporting Categories for 1. gaslighting 2. bullying, 3. lying about what people actually say (putting words in their mouths), and 4. name calling. These can be addressed/noted case by case with an automated message from the mods. This would be transparent and open for anyone to review and form their own opinion (disclaimer can be explicit).

[Spoilers] Preconceptions about Outer Wilds

After seeing the Sun going supernova in the very first loop back when I first played the game in 2020, I thought the objective of this game was to prevent this from happening by deciphering the knowledge of the universe left behind by the Nomai people.

Fast-forward to yesterday, when I finally finished the game after putting it off for almost 2 years (cuz a crash corrupted my saves and I was pissed af lmao) and, well, it was far deeper and more profound than what I had imagined.

So, I'm curious as to what you folks thought the game was about and your preconceptions prior to playing/getting deeper into the game?

(Spoilers) S1 Changed my preconceptions about Boba Fett

(Edit: I meant E1, not S1!)

The episode (and Boba’s appearance in Mando) did a really incredible job of quickly and subtly filling in the blanks on questions we’ve had for decades. Eg is Boba Fett a cold-blooded killer with little regard for life? - Turns out he’s empathetic, and even turns his head away to not see someone get murdered. The show did so many things right and was fun to watch.

One area I’ve long overestimated Boba is his ability to plan and size up a situation. It seems Boba is still recovering from his injuries, which led to him being in a weakened state for his fight - but his arrogance put himself in a position to be easily taken advantage of.

Seeing an experienced, dangerous, and renowned bounty hunter like Boba Fett choose to not move cautiously in a weakened state shows he overestimated his own abilities, as well as the respect others have for him. He got himself ambushed in front of the whole city in the middle of the day on his first collection by strutting around cash in hand with a light crew, looking like an easy mark - and got shaken down accordingly. It was an arrogant and reckless approach, and shows he isn’t as shrewd of a planner as Mando, for instance - but also shows how his gut helps him survive (β€œwill these new henchmen be loyal, and come to my rescue in a fight when the odds are against me? I think so”).

I thought an old, experienced hunter would have already put their days of relying on physical prowess behind him - especially having gone so long without his armor. To move around vulnerably in a weakened state and β€œget got” shows how cocky Boba is at E1. Boba’s lucky the crew that jumped him didn’t want him dead, or he wouldn’t have walked away from that fight.

Lots of opportunities for character growth - looking forward to watching the rest.

Preconceptions you probably have which are wrong.

The purpose of this post is to just highlight some things I have seen in the community which people seem to give more importance than they really deserve. These points are more for the general than anything. I wanna talk about things such as medals, too much information, and rank meaning something.

Starting with medals it came to me to bring this up because the number of times I see a post that is like "guys I had gold medals and we still lost!!! WTF!!!!" I honestly can't remember the last time I really cared about medals. Medals mean literally nothing. This may not be the best example but imagine a tracer that has a huge amount of kills but you still lose the game. Why is that? Well, it's generally not just one reason but you may have a high kill count and gold medal because you just kept finishing off enemies without really doing anything. On the other hand, you may have very few kills resulting in a silver or bronze medal but each of those kills could have been crucial to winning a fight. Simply put get this idea of medals meaning anything out of your head.

Next regarding too much information. I bring this up because I see these huge in-depth conversations about heroes and game stats. These have their place but if you are silver and think not knowing the exact damage your character takes in certain conditions is why you lose you are probably wrong. At that level, it's more about hammering home the basics than anything else. It's fine to discuss these things as I can agree it's fun but do not turn it into something crucial as you overcomplicate the game for yourself.

Lastly, I want to bring up rank. I believe this is just an issue across all competitive games but you need to be aware if you are attaching your ego to your rank. People often bring up the idea of "I am better than you so shut up" But I want to look at the other side. I see a lot of "I am a lowly silver player but here is my take". You don't need to be top 500 to discuss your ideas so please hold yourselves higher than that. This community is about learning and improving not segregating ourselves and our opinions by rank.

That was just my little rant when you see these enough times it really gets to you lol.

EDIT: MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

I went to my preconception appointment with a midwife today, here’s how it went!

So I went to my preconception appointment with a midwife earlier this morning and I wanted to share my experience for anyone who is interested!

This appointment was at a birth center that has multiple midwives. I met with one of them and we went into a room to talk privately one on one. The room was comfortable; it looked similar to a doctors office room, but it was more β€œcomfy” if you know what I mean.

We talked about health things: current exercise routine, diet, alcohol consumption, vitamins, family medical history, etc.

I told her about some fears I had (including my potential high blood pressure making me high risk because it runs in the family) and then she asked if I wanted her to take my blood pressure. I said yes and my blood pressure was completely normal which eased my mind immensely! In the past I had high blood pressure at doctors visits.

She let me know that I can start taking prenatals right away. We discussed my cycle length and she actually informed me that mine was more on the irregular side, and recommended a herbal remedy to help regulate my cycle (if I wanted to)

I also found out that my husband will be able to attend every ultra sound appointment with me. This was huge for me considering all the stories I have seen of women having to go to their ultrasound appointments alone due to covid.

I also asked to get my blood taken, I don’t remember exactly what is going to be screened, but I know I also asked for the genetic testing as well (they had invitae genetic testing kits at their facility which I thought was really cool because I wanted to do that anyways!) The coolest thing was she took my blood right there in the room! In the past I would always have to wait at the lab corp building with a bunch of other people to get my blood taken at like 7 or 8 in the morning. To say the least this was so much more comfortable.

The main thing I noticed in this appointment is I felt very comfortable to lead the conversation with my questions. She was there to listen and I even started crying at one point and she was extremely comforting and empathetic. She was very kind and I have only had one other health care provider that has taken their time with me the way she did. We talked for a little over an hour.

I also appreciated not being bombarded with vitals as soon as we walked in the door (heart rate, blood pressure) because I’m usually most nervous right when I get to the doctors office so my previous doctors have always been like β€œwhy is

My resting heart rate is decreasing and is now sitting where it was preconception.

So I’ve got a Garmin watch that tracks my fitness and heart rate. My resting heart rate before pregnancy was at around 55-57 bpm. Before I fell pregnant I was very much in tune with my basal body temperature and heart rate to track my cycle and ovulation date. After ovulation the basal body temp and heart rate is elevated and stays that way until the period starts. /So it goes back down to β€œnormal” for the new cycle to start again. So I noticed in the first 4 weeks of pregnancy , my resting heart rate stayed high (around 67) but now it’s back down to 55. I’m now 8 weeks and going to do an NIPT at 10 weeks. I’m trying to not read too much into this but a part of me is worried that this pregnancy is failing because my heart rate is back to pre pregnancy level. Shouldn’t it stay high because my heart is pumping more blood now? Hoping a few people can provide some advice or guidance. Needless to say, a google search and looking at mumsnet threads paint a mixed picture

What classic or cult movie surprised you in how it was different from your preconceptions of it (please don't just list movies that disappointed you)?

For example, maybe you saw a really famous classic like Casablanca for the first time and it wasn't what you expected based on all the spoofs and references in other movies.

I was surprised by how relatively serious Killer Klowns from Outer Space was. It had moments of tongue-in-cheek intentionally-bad humor, but mostly it was just straightforward non-comedy B movie stuff. You hear about low-budget genre movies having conflicting visions behind them leading to tonal inconsistency (for example I keep hearing stories where the director of a Corman-produced movie wanted to make a tongue-in-cheek spoof but Roger Corman wanting to make a serious horror movie so most of the jokes get edited out), and I wonder if that was the case here.

I was surprised by how non-1950s Hollywood Marty was. Given that it was considered a love story I expected 1950s corniness in abundance, but that's not what I got at all. It was a pretty naturalistic and raw look at loneliness.

Any singles that affected your preconception of an album you ended up liking/disliking?

Choosing singles is for sure a hard task during an album marketing campaign. I think it's normal that we tend to extrapolate what we expect to hear in the full package once been given some treats, which can be a positive and a negative thing at the same time.

I remember when Trivium - Down from the Sky came out, I didn't like it at all and was not expecting much from the record. Shogun is now by far my favourite album by them and I think Down from the Sky ended up being my least favourite song on the record, just happened to be the chosen single.

On the other side of the spectrum, I never got to fully appreciate Alien by Northlane (despite all its praise) as I was really hyped with the Vultures release and was expecting a similar kind of vibe for the rest of the record.

Curious about any experiences with this.

I booked a preconception appointment for next week!

I can't believe I'm actually going to talk with someone about what I should be doing to prepare my body to be the healthiest it can prior to pregnancy!

I actually booked the appointment with a midwife because I've always thought a midwife would be a better fit than an OB for me personally because I'm very sensitive/emotional. However, I'm not sure yet if my insurance will cover midwife care but as of right now I don't mind paying out of pocket for the first visit until I can get it figured out. (I would love to hear your experience on insurance if you've had a baby before and were under the care of a midwife)

It's also crazy that just this past April 2021 I dropped the "bomb" on my boyfriend that I felt ready to get pregnant, and it took him quite a while to warm up to the idea. Now we talk about it a lot and we're even getting married in a few months! It's just crazy how things can change. I'm also very happy that we didn't jump right into trying after I told him I was ready because I think I've been able to get myself more mentally "there" over the past 8 months.

Anyways, just wanted to share! Also I'm making a list of questions to ask the midwife so if you have any recommendations on questions I should ask I would appreciate it!

But I have this nagging voice in the back of my head wich is telling me that writing fanfic is "the easiest way" and that it is not "as good" as writing my own universe and my own characters.

I know that it's not true, but if you have advices or things to help me dare to start writing my first fanfic, it would be very appreciated :)

Preconception appointment and IUD β€œremoval”

Hi everyone - I have mentioned that I was having my preconception appointment and getting my IUD removed today in recent Daily Chat threads, but decided to make a dedicated post.

  1. I’ve read posts and comments from others that their preconception appointments weren’t too helpful and mostly just gave basic advice (take folic acid, stop preventing, go for it!) and there was more info on Reddit.

    • a) Maybe there really isn’t much to worry about and it’s just because only a certain time of person (planner, worrier, etc!) joins a sub like this. But maybe others who don’t join a sub like this are more relaxed about it? Anyway, I will say my experience was similar.

    • b) The doctor didn't seem worried about anything I ate (things to avoid etc) except just to eat healthy and get 800 mcg of folic acid per day. He mentioned that I should be eating fruits/veggies/eggs.

    • c) He said that all I needed was the 800 mcg of folic acid and since I already was getting that (and more!) with my current vitamins that it’s fine. He did not recommend to switch to a prenatal... when I told him the other supplements that I took (Vit B complex, Magnesium, Fish Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Calcium), I could tell he didn't think it was necessary and maybe even over kill.

    • d) The doctor didn’t want to do any tests -- I asked about titers and vitamin levels/deficiency. He basically just said that I’m young and healthy and that as soon as he removed the IUD I would be fertile and could β€œhave my baby.” Essentially, it was his opinion that no testing of any kind was necessary.

  2. Since I asked about titers, we got onto the subject of vaccines.

    • a) He again, didn’t seem worried and just said that if I got them all as a kid I’m fine. The only one he recommended that I get was Hepatitis B, it’s recommended in the country I’m currently living to get a booster every 10 years… and it’s been much longer than that for me. He did say that I was probably fine not getting it, and I think he thought that I wanted to start trying RIGHT AWAY and advised waiting until January to start TTC if I got the Hep B shot.

    • b) I read online that the most common ones to be recommended in the US (I think from googling I ended up on a Harvard med school website) were MMR and Varicella. I haven’t had an MMR since 1994 and I had a very mild case of chicken pox in 1990… so I asked to get those shots as well as boosters since they wouldn’t test my titers!

    • c) I found mixed resul

A self-applicable (and perhaps unjustified) preconception: Those who want to start a business but don't yet know why or what kind will likely never have a successful business.

I would like to rid myself of this notion (it appears artificially limiting), but I can't help but think that those who are optimally conditioned (temperamentally, environmentally, etc.) to start a business have already identified a problem, the value proposition, etc. and simply created their business already, contrary to merely experiencing an abstract urge to create a business for an indefinitely long time (particularly for the sake of wealth and/or "independence," and often fueled by romanticization of entrepreneurship in the media).

A perfect example of how Western media traffics in innuendo to reinforce people's preconceptions about China, and how people eat that shit up

Peng Shaui recently made headlines for accusing former vice premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual abuse via a tirade posted on Weibo.

Now, in an article conspicuously lacking in substance, British tabloid The Daily Mail has claimed that Peng Shuai has "vanished". She has apparently been censored on social media, but how do we actually know she has disappeared? Has she been reported missing? The Daily Mail only says that "she hasn't been seen since". But by who, paparazzi?

However, even if they are unable to provide any additional details, the investigative reporters at SportsBible.com are on top of this story, and their article is submitted on /r/news.

Evidently this is sufficient grounds for many redditors to confidently declare that Peng Shuai is being tortured, has been abducted and sent to a labor camp, or is even already dead. As usual, the comments are full of people reasoning backwards from their negative preconceptions and assumptions about China, and that is precisely what this type of media coverage is designed for.

EDIT 1: This story has now been picked up by an additional British tabloid The Sun, and subsequently submitted on /r/worldnews, prompting further wild speculation from redditors.

EDIT 2: The Guardian has now put out an article, which mainly cites social media posts expressing concern, but it does also report that the WTA has unsuccessfully attempted to contact Peng Shuai. At least we have something somewhat concrete now; let's see where things go from here.

EDIT 3: Peng Shuai has been confirmed safe according to the WTA. Undoubtedly people will give credit for this to the frenzy over these wild rumors. Yay self-fulfilling prophecies!

From the Ambulance service - Preconceptions and what would make our interactions more beneficial

I'm a Paramedic in the Southwest and have worked across two ambulance trusts (SCAS and SWAST) in the last 8 years.

I hold big respect for the police, I'm certain I couldn't fill your boots but I've been told the feeling is mutual by police colleagues.

I'm always a touch fascinated when there is interprofessional working as it reminds me how little I know about how other agencies do what they do.

Essentially, I am curious about police preconceptions of the ambulance service; anecdotally I have experienced moments where there has been misunderstanding of what exactly we could do or what is within the paramedic scope of practice? I.E. I've been asked to chemically restrain a person who is berserking on spice (I absolutely wish I could but this isn't within the remit of a bog standard paramedic in the UK... Yet).

Also are there things that would make our interactions more beneficial? I work in a mentoring capacity so I'm keen to gain a more robust understanding of other services and what we can do better in an interprofessional capacity.

Greenbeard here, what are the funny preconceptions for each class? Also random thoughts about the classes so far.

So, in most class based games, the community tends to attribute specific actions/playstyle/ECT. to each character, and I was curious what the general consensus is for each class?

Currently, I've tried out each class and none feel as good as the Scout. Honestly I think it's just the fact you have so many options, both weapons are pretty good, you don't feel kinda screwed if your AR runs dry cause the Sawed off is better than most pistols. The flare gun is so convent compared to the basic flares, and the grapple hook has to be the best traversal option(I play solo mostly) cause it doesn't run out of ammo. Only problem, is I swear I read it lets you hang AND mine but I cannot seem to be able to accomplish that(unless it's a control issue cause I'm on Xbox).

My only complaint with playing other classes is they feel too specialized and solo that feels like a trap. Driller has to go the long way around and drill through the walls, the platform gun is kinda wonky, and it's EXPENSIVE to build a bridge with them, and the Zipline are super limited. Then there's the weapons, in particular gunner and driller, who use the big guns but if you get screwed with nitrite spawns your gonna be dry halfway through the mission if there's tons of swarms. The sidearms are a joke, but engineer feels like the closest to a well rounded kit, but I feel like I need to save my sentries for the BIG one that never really comes it feels like.

Maybe it's just growing pains but I'm having tons of fun, I'll probably try branching out to engineer more though.

In the chat, one of my classmates wrote, "So will you be doing this program in Utah? :)" I responded with, "Awkward lol. I'm in an open situation and I promise you it's nothing like what you see on Sister Wives. Maybe I'll bring my boyfriends in for show and tell?"

Ultimately it wasn't a big deal, but it reminded me why I'm not super open with my classmates about my relationships. It's kinda weird to think that they assume I would be Mormon or part of a "collection" of spouses.

Have any of y'all had any experiences like this?

On the preconception that music is difficult to learn.

I feel a stigma, a concept that is passed on and is embedded in me, and I don't really know where it comes from: A good musician is someone who started early and has been doing it his or her entire life. Theres no way to "catch up" - You will always be miles away if you didn't start at an early age. How true - or how false - do you think this preconception is? Is music really that hard and does it demand that much of the learner's energy, attention and dedication? Is it easier than most people think it is? Or is it a middle ground? What do you think? I have been thinking about starting with music, but there's always this voice in my mind that say "You should not even bother, this is not something you can just start and be good, you always will be completly mediocre because its too late". To give further background, when I was younger my parents put me in Keyboard/Piano classes, and I was never motivated to learn and maybe just didn't enjoy the class or ambient in general. I still have my keyboard and over my vacation (Staycation actually lol) I tried to pick it up again mostly learning online but didn't feel motivated at all and just didn't seem fun. I put it in my mind that the keyboard would be great as a first instrument since I've read that alot online, but haven't had much luck, should I try a different instrument before I give up?

P.S. What's your favorite instrument?
