A list of puns related to "Polysorbate 80"
As the title says would this work?
Iβve been trying to troubleshoot my recipe and I was told to cut down my poly 80! I was using half poly 80 to my oils and fragrance combined (so 5g oil, 7g fragrance = 6g poly 80), but was told to only do half the carrier oil instead.
I was searching around the groups Iβm in and it seems like there are different opinions on what to do with poly 80, so Iβm not too sure what to think.
It does still seem like some oil is on the surface of the water so I thought I needed MORE not less... is that just a given? The bathtub doesnβt seem to be very slippery either way!
Hi DIYBeauty
I'm a long time lurker here and recently tried my hand at a simple oil cleanser with polysorbate 80 only it feels too thick (I suspect I used too much polysorbate). I was wondering what the different polysorbates are used for and if there is one that is more runny liquid than the 80.
Many thanks!
I used <10% polysorbate 80 in a 100ml bottle with light USP grade mineral oil. No matter how hard I shake, the polysorbate just settles on the bottom of the bottle, and it has a slight jelly-like consistency. It's like I'm mixing oil with water, the polysorbate doesn't mix at all. Maybe there's not enough shaking space in the bottle? (I filled it almost to the brim.) Any thoughts?

edit: i read about the DIY mixture further, and have found that it really doesn't mix. People just shake before use. I wonder if there is an ingredient you could add to unify the mixture, though. It would be so much more convenient to not shake every use.
I'm wondering if any more experienced bath-bombers can pass on any hints/tips/ratios they use for polysorbate 80.
My first couple of batches stained my tub so now I am terrified to make any without poly80, but what is the general rule of thumb?
-Do you use a % per batch?
-Do you base the amount of poly80 you use in a batch by total oils (ie: grapeseed), or just essential oils?
-Do you still use poly80 even if you have no colourants?
-Does that percentage change depending on what colourants you use eg, Mica or Dyes?
Thanks everyone for any wisdom you can pass on! :D
Newbie here, getting into bathbomb making because they're fun gifts to make for my partner, I've made a few already using food dyes, essential oils etc. all fairly basic, but I found the colour fairly underwhelming. I've trawled through a few posts and heard a lot about Mica powders alongside everyone saying they need to be paired with Polysorbate 80 to avoid them sticking to everything. I've found it easy to find mica powders online, but can't seem to find Polysorbate 80, any help appreciated.
I've read the wiki in the sidebar but found it a little barebones, so if there's any tips you wish you'd known when you started out feel free to share those too!
So I have just started to sell my bath bombs on my website. Did not expect them to sell so well straight away but YAY!
Anyways I just received a massive order and I am almost out of polysorbate 80. My question is, is it a big gamble if I donβt use it? Iβm thinking yes because I really donβt want to stain anyoneβs bathtubs.
I use Mica colourants but I my colouring is light, Iβm going for pastel effects with my bombs.
I use cocoa butter.
I also use SCI as my surfactant. Using a surfactant will this help in dispersing the mica colouring without using polysorbate 80?
Thankyou in advance
i've heard youre supposed to use poly 80 if youre using a powder dye, but im not sure where its supposed to go in during the process. the tutorials i read just say 'mix your dry first, mix your wet second, combine them thirdly, then gauge how much if any witch hazel you'll need to add' but if poly80 is supposed to be added with the dye, then do i mix the powder in with the dry ingredients, or do i mix it with the poly80 and thus it goes with the wet ingredients?
am i still supposed to use water at some point?
is poly80/witch hazel going to activate the citric acid like water might or are they intended to eliminate that problem?
im used to using food colouring dye for my bath bombs (the ones i make for myself! not ones for selling, thats why im looking to make the move toward dye+poly80) so im just trying to figure out where i need to adjust my ingredients
PS The dye im looking at is a sample set of 2.5gm lake dyes. im not sure if 2.5gm is supposed to be enough for one batch or if id be able to make a fair few with that. i was also wondering if you can mix powder dye to make other colours (red powder + yellow powder = orange powder for example) as you would with liquid dye? Thank you for any and all help!!
i keep hearing soundbites about polysorbate 80,
how it opens up the blood brain barrier and does harm in animal, but i didn't look at the research myself.
so can those, who looked at it in depth, please link the studies in regards to polysorbate 80 and their conclusions/views on it.
polysorbate 80 is used in a lot of medications outside of vaccines, which also concerns me.
for example puberty blocker injections for transsexual children.
so theoretically getting more polysorbate 80 from other injections alongside vaccines during childhood could increase the chance of side effects of vaccines, if polysorbate 80 opens up the blood brain barrier for example, is there some research on this?
so yeah, please share whatever research u got, i'll really appreciate it :)
Hi everyone! I bought polysorbate 80 to use as an emulsifier in my bath bombs that I will be colouring with mica powder. I was told by my sister that polysorbate 80 is a neurotoxin. I have found some info regarding this online but Iβm wondering if this is a common ingredient that is safe to use for something like bath bombs? Is it okay in small/trace amounts?
Thanks in advance for your help!
First off, I'm a layman not a scientist - so I feel like I'm probably missing something about polysorbate 80 that I'm hopeful this subreddit can assist with. My understanding is that it is a relatively benign substance made by mixing oil and water together into a stable, uniform state and used as an emulsifier in both food production and beauty products to help with consistency. It is also used as an ingredient in many vaccines as an excipient and emulsifier.
That's all well and good. It's just basically oil and water, right?
Well, I had a discussion with an anti-vaxxer who stated that polysorbate 80 was used in chemotherapy as a means of getting the active ingredient past the blood brain barrier. I looked into that claim and found it substantiated.
I then looked for information addressing why the anti-vaxxer's argument was invalid on both Reddit and Google and frankly didn't find much satisfaction. The only people I found addressing these claims were a couple Reddit posts, a WordPress blog, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's website with this explanation that seemed to be the authoritative source on the topic since their statement is repeated on the majority of the Google results as fact:
"The HPV vaccine contains polysorbate 80 as a stabilizer. Some stories on the internet have suggested that polysorbate 80 in this vaccine causes infertility. First, it is important to know that the HPV vaccine does not cause infertility. Second, polysorbate 80 has been used for many years as an emulsifier to make ice cream smooth and to slow melting. A typical serving of ice cream (1/2 cup) may contain about 170,000 micrograms* of polysorbate 80. On the other hand, the amount of polysorbate 80 in each dose of the HPV vaccine β 50 micrograms* β is very small. Therefore, polysorbate 80 isnβt contained in vaccines at quantities that could possibly do harm."
I found the statement lacking in credibility as ingesting a substance is not the same thing as injecting it straight into your bloodstream. It seemed like a comparison of apples and oranges.
The other argument I found was that the amount used in chemotherapy was orders of magnitude more and that at lower volumes it doesn't have the same effect. I didn't feel competent to evaluate that claim myself but it seemed reasonable.
However, polysorbate 80 isn't just used in chemotherapy and vaccines; it's also used as a
... keep reading on reddit β‘I've been trying to cast dice in a silicone mold with the easy cast clear epoxy, but I keep having bubbles form at the top of the dice, would using Polysorbate 80 help with this problem?
Looking to muck about with emulsified sauces. Does it add a noticeable flavor when used with various cooking oils? Can I even use it in this way or is it more just for baked goods? 60 or 80...which ever would be best
They are both used commercially in food, liquid medicines, and cosmetics, are flavorless, less viscous than VG, soluble in oils, water and alcohol...
is there a reason this stuff never became common?
(I haven't made a juice with them, but am wondering if anyone has ever tried)
Update: So it seems like no one has tried to vape it and can say how it tastes/feels. And although it's in inhaled medicines, there have been more studies proving PG's safety over long term use. And it's slightly more expensive.
I have done a 7 day fast before and was fine. Iβm currently on day 5 of water fasting and Iβm told to take salt water (pink Himalayan) for electrolytes. But whenever I take the salt water it makes me want to throw up. And throughout the day I think β okay maybe I need saltβ and just the thought of salt makes me want to throw up..
So I heard I could take sips of pickle juice for electrolytes but to avoid the ones with polysorbate 80. Does anyone know any brands that donβt have that ingredient ?
Although I am a nurse, I am quite ignorant when it comes to this chemical in Gardasil. I read that it is a common food additive, but that when injected it has shown to have adverse effects in rats. Naturally, my anti-vaccine friends are all over this information.
I believe in immunizing for the greater good, but should I try to dispel fears about this chemical in Gardasil? Could it really be a threat to female reproduction? I will gladly read and contemplate everything that the brainiacs of Reddit can share about this. Thanks in advance!
I realize this is not at all a scholarly article, but here's what I read: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/921099/gardasil_vaccine_ingredients_roach.html?cat=70
I tried making my own water soluble cleansing oil with mineral oil and polysorbate 80 today, but instead of a smooth liquid I got a yellowy and a clear phase in a bottle. I used 80% mineral oil and 20% of the emulsifier. Is there anything I could do to prevent the ingredients from separating?
I got some polysorbate 80 and have read that you can make a very effective edible tincture with it, mixing it with ethanol and cannabinoids. I wonder how much polysorbate 80 i need to add to 100 ml of ethanol?
I just noticed that TFA lemon lime contains this ingredient. I can't find much about it regarding safety. It is aparently in some inhalers, but I'm not sure about the safety of vaping it. Does anyone have any info on it?
