A list of puns related to "Polyphony"
Hi All,
I previously asked some questions about Polyphony and got some really great answers and learned about some things about Voice Cards and Divide Down technology and so on.
I wanted to revisit this because there are a few things I'm not 100% clear on and wanted to see if I could hone that knowledge.
As I understand it, something with "6 Voice Polyphony" will literally have 6 "voice cards" (or something similar).
I asked about Junos and Jupiters earlier, so let's take those as an example. A Juno 106 has only 1 Oscillator, but 6 "voice cards" or something similar. So it has 6 voice polyphony.
A Jupiter 6 by contrast would have TWO oscillators, but is still 6 voice polyphony because it still only has 6 physical voice cards. Yes?
While in the latter there is more than one oscillator on a voice card, the settings for one or both oscillators is shared across the cards, such that if you were to play 6 notes, the would all be the same tone (waveform, etc., but different pitches obviously).
So essentially on either, you set up your sound, and you can play up to 6 notes on it. A 7th note will do - something - depending on the priority, such as potentially cut off the first of previous 6 notes played, etc.
Ignoring what might happen in Unison mode or a split mode on the Jupiter, this is correct, yes?
Quick aside:
Now, with Divide Down technology, you have 12 Oscillators, one for each note of the chromatic scale, so you can play 12 notes at a time.
And you can play them in different octaves because the way pitches are produced are I guess not through voltage changes on a single oscillator (or card) but through halving (and halving again, etc.) the output of a single oscillator.
I just read that this means you could only play 1 of each note - is that true? Like if you played C-E-G-C, only 1 of the C notes could play?
But my real question is how do things with 128 Note Polyphony work. Multi-Timbral synths and Digital Pianos, etc.
I assume there are no longer physical voice cards...or are there?
I've heard of "Voice Allocation" - is that where this is headed?
In the Roland D series, they use "partials" to create a Tone. But unlike a voice card where you might use 1 or 2 oscillators to create a tone but that still only counts as one unit of polyphony (one card) these partials all "cost" 1 unit of polyphony per partial.
That's not horrible since you have 128.
But I'm still not sure where that number is coming from - obviously binary (and I'
... keep reading on reddit β‘I like songs that have harmony created by different vocal lines overlapping in modern (rock, pop) music. Rounds have this feature and are great, but I prefer when it isn't just the same line out of phase, but different lyrics, melodies and rhythms interacting. Fugues are a more formal classical version of this.

I found this old thread which seemed to be asking the same question and there are some good answers, but many seem more focused on general tight vocal harmonies and somewhat missed the mark. Maybe u/matthewbvan/ has accumulated a larger collection of these over the last year.
im just counting the days it took Polyphony Digital to make each Gran Turismo game. GT1 doesn't count because its their first game.
Gran Turismo 2: 1 year, 11 months, 18 days.
Gran Turismo 3: 1 year, 4 months, 17 days
Gran Turismo 4: 3 years, 8 months.
Gran Turismo 5: 5 years, 10 months, 27 days.
Gran Turismo 6: 3 years, 12 days.
Gran Turismo Sport: 3 years, 10 months, 12 days.
How long do you guys think GT7 will take since GT Sport.
Iβm thinking of getting an analog four and I can only afford the first version (MK1). Does the polyphony mode work on the first analog four? Or is it exclusive to the MK2? I wanna make chords and donβt know if it will work on the original

An insider who works at Sony Interactive Entertainment has seen quite a bit of Polyphonyβs secret project and he tells that it is Polyphonyβs most ambitious project ever. He says that it is open world and has the same mechanics as the mainline Gran Turismo titles.
It is going to blow Forza Horizon 4 out of the water if this is true. Races in Gran Turismo are way more fun than the ramming slugfests in Forza Horizon. Gran Turismo will also have a good campaign and customization too.
Hey ππΌ Iβve recently got myself op-z and I am really amazed by how much this tiny gear sparks creativity!
I have stumbled on something which I canβt figure out pithily. When I record the tracks in the sequencer - at some point when I live play over some recorded drum/chord sequence my played notes will not be played at all :(
Iβve read that there is 4 notes polyphony limit. But I think this applies to the track and within tracks there should not be a limitation. So my question is - how many tracks can sound simultaneously at single step, is there a limit to that?
Thanks for help!
I've always been a GT player. Since GT3 actually. And the fact that cars wouldn't have any significant damages after a huge shunt never bothered me.
But since their penalty system is a joke in Sort mode, I just wish they introduce realistic damage in their next title so the sore loosers who will crash you out will have to retire from the race with the amount of damage their car has.
I just can't play this game without being constantly pushed off the track! I just don't get why Polyphony don't take action against these kind of behaviour. It's hurting the community. These guys can not race or they just want to take you off track for fun. And for what ? A 12th place.
I may sound like a whiner but this situation is not normal. I just want to race but I instead find myself avoiding people who want to play bumper cars.
And to add insult to injury. All of this is happening in A+/ S lobbys.
So yeah. This is the situation.
I hope Polyphony will find a way to fix these problems.
What would you guys do ?
I love how they have time trials for laps but I feel like they could somewhat expand on that. It would be cool if they had time trial races in a sense to where it has FIA settings but no cars around. Helps people as well who are amazing at one lap but could work on tire/fuel management. TLDR time trial races?
Iβve noticed that seeing others helmets and suits is pretty rare. It would be cool if in FIA races it could show the whole character in front of their car.
Thatβs all.
I know polyphony is hot topic around the Blofeld. Iβm aware that complex patches can drop voice count well below the max 25 but Iβm wondering about the impact this would really have in (my own) practical use situations. Most of the comments I read blame comb filters or unison (duh) for dropping voice count.
My very specific curiosity is this: can it handle a multi set up with piano samples on osc 1 plus a simple VA pad from oscs 2 and 3 and a second part with a plucky/keys patch. Just lp filters and simple effects. What kind of polyphony are we talking about at that point?
Hi everybody!
I recently bought a Volca keys and noticed that the third note polyphony introduced a lot of noise in my sound. Is this normal or is there an issue with my unit?
It almost feels like a cutoff LFO set at a very fast rate. I tried different settings but I always get the same results.
I put my headphones directly on my Volca to make sure it wasn't a cable issue.
Looking forward to reading your experience regarding this !
>I'm fairly new to electronics but I was curious about how synthesizers achieve polyphony with the cem3340. Do they simply have more than one input into the chip or is there a different chip for every voice. Or a different option I'm not seeing. Thanks
Well, the deepmind sub is too empty to respond so Iβm hoping someone here has two deepminds
I have a Deepmind 6 and 12 chained together and Iβm wondering how to set 18-voice unison? Currently, they each only allow the amount of voices that they can do alone, so synths on the 12 can so 12 voices and vice versa.
I can still play big chords if I play both synths together, like if the polyphony is 6 I can still play three notes at once to add up to 18 voices, but Iβm not allowed to do 18 voices in one note.
Is this by design? Or am I missing something
Iβm coming from maschine & on there if I want to lay down chops on top of other ones I can just change the polyphony of the pad with the chop on it or just assign it to a different choke group. Can someone help me do this on my mpc live ii without having to copy everything to another program?
Hello /r/synthesizers, hope this is a good place to ask this. I just got my Circuit tracks in the mail a couple days ago and I am loving it. However, I am experiencing an issue with polyphonic synth patches.
I am noticing often when I try to play more than 2 notes, not all of them will sound on the initial trigger. For example, if I play a triad on a midi controller, only the 3rd and 5th will sound, or sometimes the root and the 5th, and so on. I doesn't seem deterministic, just sorta randomly doesn't play all the notes. It even happens when I lock a step in a sequence to playing multiple notes and then I hit the pad for that step, sometimes not all the stored notes will sound. Is anyone else experiencing this issue?
Hello, I just go an ES-9 and Ableton 11 Suite. I can use the cv instrument to control one oscillator in my Eurorack set up but I'm wondering if I can set it up to send out four to six individual CV/Gate tracks from the four to six note chords I'm playing from my MIDI keyboard. Thanks!
