My grandfather was a mathematician back in the day, and worked at one of the departments Erdős frequented. He has some stories, and I plan on asking some questions. What should I ask?

I'll be recording the call. If he lets me, I'll post it. If not, I'll just write an update text post.

Who is the wrestling Paul Erdős

Inspired by casual chat about what friends know what friends, I started drifting. Paul Erdős came up. If you don't know, he's a mathematician who's known for collaborating with a large number of people. There's a thing called an Erdős number. It's a collaborative distance to Erdős, in a six-degrees style. 0 is the man himself, 1 is "collaborated with", 2 is "collaborated with someone who collaborated with" and so on.

It got me thinking about wrestling. Who could be the wrestling version of this dude? By collaborating, I thought to consider a collaboration as:

  • wrestled against
  • tagged with
  • managed
  • was managed by

Who would actually be the best shouts to start with for that? Liger? Flair? Kane?

I mean, who could we consider to have had the most matches with the most different opponents and/or tag partners, as a start?

I might end up down a massive research hole here

[Spoilers S02E11] I hope this episode raises great awareness of a truly prolific mathematician, Paul Erdős!

During Elliot's reverse cipher scene, there is mention of Erdos-Woods numbers, as recapped here.

Paul Erdős was a lifelong contributor to mathematics, and sure, the field knows a lot of brilliant eccentrics and tender prodigies. But more than any peer, he was a collaborator of the highest number, working with more than 500 other boffins, to such a degree that the Erdős number, kind of like a Kevin Bacon patron saint of numbers, was dubbed in his honor.

Truly a fascinating guy and an entertaining storyteller. Some have dubbed him a meth-metician for the prodigious amounts of work he'd do during amphetamine sessions. A misnomer, since that's not crystal meth. He once said, after voluntarily stopping for awhile at a friend's behest:

> "You've showed me I'm not an addict, but I didn't get any work done...you've set mathematics back a month."

Here's a documentary about the man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN4yLPPvRBg

It's also worth noting that his last name is commonly pronounced as Er-DISH, rather than the Er-DOS used in S02E11.

In a parallel way to how Erdős was a hub for math, connecting disparate threads together, Elliot is a hub for the happenings on Mr. Robot.

Its a fun puzzle, which goes as follows:

Let n be any positive integer. Given the set of numbers from 1 to 2n, show that no matter how we pick out n+1 of these numbers, there must be one which divides another.

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to specify that n is positive
