What's the best place for some japanese ramen?
Apologies if this isn't appropriate but I just need to vent out my frustration and disappointment of my experiences in trying to buy my first home in our city.
I grew up here (family and I immigrated in the early 90s so pretty much born and bred Cantabrian) went to primary school through to high school here. Studied at university in Otago and came back to work for our health system in our hospital for the CDHB.
I just turned 30 and I've been doing all the "right things" in saving up for a deposit, being frugal with my spending, and finding a job in a profession that can be pretty much my entire career till I retire. Heck, even the bank people and the first home starter grant people were impressed at how strict I had been on myself through my 20s to be in the position that I am today - having finally saved a deposit for my first home for a letter of offer and pre approval grant accepted.
I made offers and spoken to agents in the last 3 months since I got approval from the bank, went to countless open homes, and finally I thought I found a little 2 bedroom 1 bathroom townhouse from the 1980s that seemed promising.
I inquired what the vendor was asking and spoke to the agent and I thought "this was it", I'd have finally found my first home. I submitted an offer that was exactly the amount that the vendor was asking and the agent advised I should offer.
Yesterday was the deadline and the agent rung a few hours later while I nervously waited and said I lost out to some out of town middle aged wealthy person who came in at the last minute and said he/she will buy the townhouse $30k above the price the vendor was after and that the offer would be unconditional: meaning no financial clause, builders report clause, LIM report clause, or anything. They would straight up buy the house with a bag of cash.
This isn't my first experience of being rejected and declined but I felt this one hit me very hard and I feel like all of this price increase in the housing market has really affected me mentally and it has all built up through time.
The townhouse was a friend of a friend's and they even told me they'd love to sell the house to me and to go through the vendor however when someone from out of city comes in with all this money they quickly took back what they said to me and wanted more money at no conditions- which I completed understand but it was gut wrenching for me.
I think I will look at leaving New Zealand and move to Australia. My friends there who grad

Hello,
This is a reminder on our third tule:
> Do not share links to the Christchurch or Halle livestreams or ask for them in any way.
We are aware that many users may be new to the sub/havenβt read the rules, so this is a just a friendly reminder. However, keep in mind this a bannable offense.
Some people wonder why this video in particular is banned but other gore isnβt. The reason is because Reddit admins specifically ban these first person mass killing videos. Other subs have been removed in the past for sharing the Christchurch video. In addition, New Zealand made it illegal to distribute the video. So, if we want the sub to stay up we have to be vigilant.
Thanks!
I'm using a throwaway, but I wanted to make a topic advocating for a young lady who has been having some issues. We met by chance and I have a soft spot for people that need help.
She's a young single mother, who lives in social housing. Grew up in the environment of shitty parents, shitty friends and in general absolutely the pinnacle of worst taste in men. She was previously a meth addict and she's gotten clean around a year ago.
However her children's fathers are all gang affiliated, in and out of jail with several family members very addicted and actively abusing meth everyday.
Its so bad to the point that she deleted all her social networks, and changed her number several times but people call her for hours on end. They show up at her house in angry methed up rage and smash things while screaming at her.
Ive seen videos of these people going absolutely mental over genuinely nothing, where they threaten to smash the door in and take care of her while her newborn is right there. Smash everything thats breakable in the courtyard while holding broken beer bottles.
She gets protection orders, and they just send different people to harass her. They drive buy her house, walk around. I thought at first she was paranoid and then i spent the day at her house just watching tv, and it is genuinely relentless. I felt beyond unsafe and I only spent a day there.
She doesnt trust the police at all because they have basically universally not helped her in any capacity before. Some of that is due to the nature of her past. But shes very afraid of OT taking away her child when she is a fit mother. She provides for her children and they are happy and well fed.
I'm a relatively well connected male, with zero issues in terms of criminality. I want to help her without obviously making things worse and I would like to know from a perspective, of if you were this girls parents and had to force the government or police to step in, how would you?
Her parents are utterly incompetent fuckheads. They were giving her bags of dope at age 12. I have no real intention of meeting them or getting them involved because I think they are utter dropkicks who shouldnt of had kids.
Im looking for any and all ideas. But I dont want her to lose her kids.
Hey people! I was wondering if people could help me with gym prices? There's never up front online about prices and I'm wondering what my best bang for buck would be? Any help appreciated βΊοΈ
This heat wave has me craving a classic ice cream in a cone (waffle or standard).
Have tried a couple from random dairies but disappointed in their size to cost ratios.
Anyone have a go-to dairy for their ice cream fix? Bonus points if they sell the best flavour - gold rush.
EDIT: Sounds like Redcliffs is the go, thanks all. Will make sure I visit there soon. Darfield probably more of a 'must stop' if I find myself there as it's a bit of a hike.
Side note - Frozen direct has some sweet deals!
Here I was, keen as a bean to get out to Corsair this evening to enjoy this beautiful patch of summer⦠only to find countless smashed bottles, food scraps for days, and ice cream containers full of rubbish left around.
Iβm disappointed.
I challenge you (and your friends, family, and colleagues too) to leave a place of nature better than what you found it next time youβre outβ¦ and certainly not worse. Rant over.
Edit: My friend has asked me to thank each one of you for the information. He has made up his mind to get a house in Papanui. :)
Just a heads up for people who live in Christchurch. I've recently had some stuff stolen from me and despite having some solid information on who took it, the police aren't interested. We've engaged a PI and things are looking up, but I wanted to pass on the enphasis that if you stuff gets stolen, don't expect police help.
The obvious takeaway is to make sure your belongings and home are secure. Start locking those doors and windows people. Get someone to house sit if you are going away on holiday.
Get a security cam, both for deterrent, but also so you can track down anyone yourself. Reolink have a good wifi camera if you want one that doesn't require a monthly payment.
Holidays are coming up and people have more incentive to commit crime (need money), there are more opportunities (people go away) and there is more info about what can be stolen (don't show off your new shit or leave empty brand new TV boxes on your front porch).
Figured it's worth a warning from my experience, hopefully, I can save you the hassle I've had. Do not expect any help from the police if you have a break-in or a theft.

> I really like it, but it is a bit huge and definitely shouldn't be in Hagley Park. Not at that size anyway. What's happening with the old sale yards, who owns them? That would be a better spot.
