AskScience AMA Series: Hi! We're experts from the National Institutes of Health, the National Toxicology Program, and the American Botanical Council studying the quality, safety, and effectiveness of botanical dietary supplements and essential oils. Ask us anything!

Botanical dietary supplements, sometimes called herbals or herbal dietary supplements, and essential oils are products made from plants, plant parts, or plant extracts. One study found that natural products, including botanical dietary supplements, are used by approximately 15% of adults and are widely available in the United States. In fact, according to the American Botanical Council, Americans spent a total of $8.8 billion on botanical dietary supplements in 2018.

But, just because a product is from a plant source and sold in stores or online, doesntt mean it's safe. The safety of a botanical or essential oil depends on many things, such as its chemical makeup, how it works in the body, how it is prepared, and the dose used.

The amount of scientific evidence available for various botanical supplement ingredients varies widely, in part, because product safety is not tested by FDA and federal law does not require dietary supplements be tested for effectiveness before they are marketed.

Studying the potential effects of botanical dietary supplements has several unique challenges. For example, all botanical dietary supplements contain a complex mixture of ingredients, making it difficult to identify and link active ingredients to health effects. Growing, harvesting, and processing conditions can also affect the chemical makeup of a botanical supplement, leading to challenges in manufacturing identical products batch after batch. Possible contaminants - either accidental or intentional via adulteration - in botanical dietary supplements (e.g. heavy metals, microbes, undeclared ingredients, or pesticides) needs to be determined as part of routine quality control since these can affect its safety.

Our hosts today are all experts on studying the quality, safety, and/or efficacy of botanical dietary supplements and essential oils to better understand how to use them more safely and effectively.

He answers many of the inquiries from ABC members, in particular those relating to quality control and analytical methods. [SPOILERS] I'm an Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Specialist and I'm here to provide a calculated death toll for the final two episodes.

So, as someone who has a background in occupational and environmental safety and health I'm here to talk to you, my fellow GoT fans, about how the majority of the surviving population of King's Landing is surely doomed following Daenerys' attack on King's Landing. Including, every main character present. If you don't want to read everything just skip to the bottom for the TL; DR. This is also my first post to this subreddit as I just recently discovered it so if this has already been done, please forgive me.

For starters, we must establish how many people originally lived in King's Landing. During season 3's episode "The Bear and the Maiden Fair," Jaime Lannister states the population of King's Landing during Robert's Rebellion was half a million. This number matches up with Tyrion Lannister's own estimates in George R.R. Martin's 'A Storm of Swords' novel and so we will use this number as a base.

However, it is important to remember that many of the people who lived outside of King's Landing in local communities fled to the city and were housed within its gates. Furthermore, there are surely soldiers within the city as well and so going forward I estimate that the grand total of people housed within the city is about one million.

Estimating the casualty count of Daenerys' attack (or genocide depending on who you ask) is difficult to do but luckily, we can look at some reasonably similar events in our own history to get an idea. Toward the end of World War II, Allied forces started a bombing campaign over the German city of Dresden. Over the course of three days, thousands of tons of explosives and incendiaries were dropped over the city, destroying property and killing thousands.

The similarities between Dresden and King's Landing are strikingly similar if you excuse a flying dragon. The native population of Dresden prior to the bombing campaign is estimated at approximately 642,000 people. Though, owing to an influx of military personnel and refugees, some historians estimate there were closer to a million people living there at the time. Due to this, the number of dead is impossible to definitively determine, but historians have estimated the death total reached 135,000 people killed.

So, using this information as an indicator and based on what we saw in the second to last episode I would estimate about 100,000 people died from dragon fire, 25,000 died from falling debris, 25,000 died from being slaughtered by the Dothraki/the North's men/Unsullied

Is masters in Occupational Health and Safety worth it?

Hello,

I am a 5th-year student at Ryerson university taking Occupational health and safety, I really want to go for my masters in occupational health and safety but was told by many people that it is not necessary to get masters and to just gain experience. I want to get my master in occupational health and safety ( primarily at mc gill) but do not want to get it if it is a waste a time. Question is directed to safety managers or anybody in Health and safety field. Will masters degree benefit in health and safety industry or is it better to just go straight to work after graduation.
