as most of you probably know there’s a lot of mixed opinions about monomania but it’s my third favorite (behind both twin fantasys (twin fantasies??)) csh album and one of my fav albums of all time and i wanna see if anyone else has a similar experience w this album (+ twin fantasy)
so twin fantasy is my fav album of all time because i have a past experience that heavily relates to the story in twin fantasy (or at least my perception of it). my first relationship was a queer, traumatic, co-dependent mess when i was very young and i ended up carrying a lot of the other persons problems, and was basically emotionally abused for the earlier formative years of my life (did not want to make this very personal but idk how to describe it another way sorry guys). because of the nature of the relationship, i could not express any anger without being shut down or hurt, and this carried on with me for a long time after the relationship had ended and i had lost all contact with the person.
i found twin fantasy at a time where i had just been beginning to accept the situation for exactly how terrible it was, and was finally letting myself be angry at both her AND just anything in general??? because i had not felt anger in over a year. i connected so deeply to twin fantasy on first listen, and it really helped me process and accept the situation quicker than i had before. it was the first time i felt validated, and hearing songs like sober to death really did change me and help me so so greatly.
i didn’t listen to monomania until a few months after twin fantasy. by this time, twin fantasy had reached the top of my favorite albums of all time and i had used it as a tool to understand my trauma and FEEL understood by someone else. then monomania came. remember that anger i couldn’t feel before? monomania helped with that
ik a lot of people dislike monomania because it’s too intense or childish and immature, but that’s what it feels like after a relationship like this and i didn’t understand that for so long because … i couldn’t be angry. and when it all caught up to me, which it finally began to at this point, all i could express was this seemingly immature anger
when i heard that first “i didn’t like you anyway” in romantic theory my jaw dropped. i never thought that an album would be able to portray everything that i had been trying to feel for over a year when all that came out was pure, unexplainable anger that felt like a kid pouting in a corner because that’s

So, I see a lot of people calling the song Anchorite problematic because of the “such a drag” line and “death of the lady man.” While I think that’s just up for interpretation (I see the such a drag as just a callback to Sleeping with Strangers), I do want to talk about how it alludes to Cate’s transition, or just having a trans partner in general- and how I like that.
I’m trans. While I can admit that a lot of it is problematic, and heavy, I want to hear it. Anchorite and Monomania as a whole gives me such a raw, intense feeling of pain and the ugly hurt that comes from not knowing things that are important about your partner.
I know it can be offensive, but I also think that’s part of the importance- his views certainly don’t align that way anymore, but the selfishness and ugliness is important to acknowledge, too. It’s not sympathetic, and it’s uncomfortable, but it’s real. And I kinda appreciate it.
Thoughts on it? I know it’s a decently common discussion, but I always like seeing different points of view.
Ayyyy here we go! Monomania survivor! Next is 2011 Twin Fantasy, and then HTLT. Now I wanna see predictions on this because this is probably the album I’ve listened to the least. Anyways, I will see you all in 24 hours for the first round.
The album is mostly about Her and Will's relationship and some songs like anchorite seem very harsh. I think the album is kind of Immature although Cate did do the album cover so it's hard to say what she thinks about it.
I’m currently starting to write an essay on monomania and I was wondering what the most respectful way to refer to Kate is. I mentioned that Will’s partner at the time transitioned mtf but should I be using she/her pronouns for Kate to illustrate their relationship before she came out. I don’t mean to be disrespectful if this come across that way, I just wanna know the most respectful way to talk about her.
The more I get older, the more I love this album.
I really like when Deerhunter gets angry like that. I know Monomania is a dark era for Bradford because of a lot of bad things happened to him but this album is amazing.
Do you think Deerhunter would release a new punk album like that in this new decade or is it over ?

ok so i really really like monomania but I just can’t deal with the 2012 version of times to die. When I started listening to csh I really didn’t like anything before HTLT, and really hardly listened to anything before that album. And I really liked teens of style, and specifically I really liked times to die. For the most part I like the teens of style versions of every song better than their original (so sue me) but I still like all of the originals a lot. But I just can not listen to the 2012 version of times to die. It’s to the point where I have a playlist that is literally just monomania but with times to die switched. I like the 2012 maud gone and los barrachos, so I don’t know why I hate times to die so much but yeah idk why I even. made this post
The title is the question. I understand that people dislike some of the verses in souls and people don’t like the problematic death of a woman man thing but honestly I really like this album as a whole and paired with twin fantasy I think it’s amazing. Why do people always put it so low in tier lists and just in general?
I'm not sure how related to my bipolar 2 this is, or if I just have an obsessive personality, but I get aaall the waaay into things. I am all or nothing all the time.
I am either not reading, or binge reading for several hours a day. Not playing video games, or playing to completion. This year I have been infatuated with a certain series, I watched and finished the show, I read all the books, and after that I felt so panicked about having nothing left I'm now listening to the audiobook versions (whilst continuing to rewatch the tv series over and over).
It's not just when I'm hypomanic, really everyday. It takes up significant headspace, sometimes it's all I can think about. My obsessions normally change every couple months but I've been stuck in a loop of this one fictitious series since late last year and it doesn't seem to be going away, only getting more desperate as I have no new content.
When I'm hypo I get very obsessed with bizarre ideas and concepts that I wouldn't be if I were stable, but even when I am in my right mind I can't help but get completely caught up in one the one thing. Everything that isn't the one thing bores the shit out of me, it's all just a tedious distraction from what I'd rather be thinking about (sorry for being cryptic, I don't really want to name the series).
I am going to talk about this with my psych when I start sessions again, but just wanted to see if you guys could relate. If so, please share, I would really like to hear your perspective.
