2021 was a difficult year, but I was lucky enough to try a ton of new games over the course of the year. Here are some brief thoughts on each of them!
##Not for meโฆ
Roll To The Top! (3/10): Take this with a grain of salt, as roll and writes arenโt really my thing. However, this โback to basicsโ take on the genre was probably the most bored Iโve been with any game I played in 2021. The dice switching mechanic is unnecessarily fiddly and slows the game down, which is a big problem when the best thing the game has going for it is how quickly it finishes.
Godspeed (3/10): I had high hopes for this one, but it fell completely flat. The semi-cooperative element (the โHigh Councilโ event cards) just felt like they didnโt work at all. The rest of the game was more functional than this, but it wasnโt any more fun.
An Otter Won (3/10): Two-player trick taking that has some interesting ideas around set collection scoring conditions. Unfortunately, the actual trick-taking is dull and the only interesting decisions are in working out which card you should take as your reward for winning tricks. Some may enjoy it, but this felt far too mathy for us to get any enjoyment from.
Beyond The Sun (4/10): As someone with less-than-great vision, I will always consider games with vast amount of variable small text spread out across a big central board to be bad game design. I canโt remember too much about how it played to give any meaningful critiques, but I certainly found it a slog.
Fort (4/10): Iโve always been someone who enjoys building things in games, whether thatโs decks, engines or anything else. Fort seems to actively push against building longer-term strategies, instead encouraging players to make the best of whatโs available to them in the shorter term. Nothing wrong with thatโฆ but personally I didnโt like it at all. Fort doesnโt really have a โgame arcโ and it made me realise how much I need that in my games.
Ghost Blitz (4/10): This is pretty much the same game as Dobble. I hate Dobble.
Oh My Goods! (5/10): We played through โExpedition to Newdaleโ in 2020 and enjoyed it, but felt that a few of the elements added in (notably the map board) felt superfluous. Going back to Oh My Goods, the original card came Newdale was based on, quickly changed our minds. The game thatโs left is slow, stodgy and not especially interesting.
##Inoffensive enough
New York Zoo (5.5/10): The polyomino puzzle is fine, and the race i

Last tike I went to castle wars it was dead. Seems to have completely die off.
Be cool to throw some bots to play with in there to liven it back up.
I am currently playing Yakuza 0 and the amount of mini games is quite impressive. Even though I may not know how to play games like Shogi or Riichi Mahjong I am glad that they exist in the game. I want to know what are some games that have tons of mini games in them like the Yakuza series.
Everyone has probably experienced this in gaming, some wonky mini game that is forced down your throat ad infinitum. Although they are usually not required to finish the level or game, they can be integrated in so many aspects that they are essentially required to get bonus items or complete the game 100%. Recently I was thinking that I pretty much dislike all 'hacking' minigames universally. Usually they have a timer and very few space for errors, which stresses me out. Even though I love Bioshock and Mass Effect, fuck those hacking 'games'. Nier Automata's hacking was a little better in interactivity, but still got stale and annoying after a few 'games'.
Even though it wasnโt really a minigame, Iโd like to mention Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Most people who have played that game will already know what Iโm referring to. Fuck that Star Destroyer mission. This almost made me go insane. How are players supposed to complete this fucking mission? The controls that were never explained anywhere in the game until this point. Iโd rather not think about the amount of tries before I got fed up and quit.
So what mini games have made you pull your hairs out?
My friend bought four "World's Smallest" 60 card decks from Walmart and made a functional commander deck with [[Yidris]] as the commander. How would you react if your playgroup started using mini cards? (Banana for scale)

That's all.
The actual reason I'm making this post is that my players want to have a Halloween party in Strixhaven (since the semester started in October) and I'm looking for some fun mini games I could do with them. However, I do not come empty-handed. Here is a list of some mini games you could use for your games. Feel free to share some ideas I could use for the Halloween session in return.
The PCs and some NPCs fling spells at targets to acquire the most points. There are three targets: one in close range, one in mid range and one that is far away. Each target consists of a bullseye, an inner ring and an outer ring (like in darts). Each character has three shots. The further away the target, the more points are awarded, yet it's also more difficult to hit a distant target. The PCs make a ranged spell attack for each of their shots. Before they make the roll they must declare the target they are trying to hit (close, mid, far). The AC and the points awarded are as follows:
Target | AC | points awarded |
---|---|---|
close (outer ring) | 12 | 2 |
close (inner ring) | 13 | 4 |
close (bullseye) | 14 | 6 |
mid (outer ring) | 16 | 8 |
mid (inner ring) | 17 | 10 |
mid (bullseye) | 18 | 12 |
far (outer ring) | 20 | 14 |
far (inner ring) | 22 | 16 |
far (bullseye) | 24 | 18 |
If a player does not meet the minimum AC for the target he has declared, his shot misses. Example: Bob the Elf declares that he aims for the mid range target. He makes a ranged spell attack and rolls a 15. He would have needed a 16 to hit the mid range target's outer ring, so his shot misses. Grimbeard the dwarf also aims for the mid range target, gets an 18 and hits the bullseye. He is therefore awarded 12 points. The character with the most points after three shots wins the game.
2. two truths and a lie
An NPC tells two true stories (or facts) about himself and one story that is made-up. A character has then to discern which of the stories is a lie. The NPC makes a Charisma (deception) check contested by the character's Wisdom (Insight) check. Success: the character knows which story is made up. Failure (but close): one of the stories is revealed to be a true story and he/she must pick between the other two. Failure: The character has no idea and must guess which story might be false. Alternatively you could replace the contest by a DC15 Insight check, if you don't want to roll for the NPC. On a 12 or higher (but
