Meatal stenosis fix?

To the guys who say they've fixed their meatal stenosis* by restoring, I have a few questions:

  1. Did you have problems with peeing / ejaculating (pain, trouble emptying bladder, weak flow, reflux, etc.) before you started restoring? Have those problems gotten better?

  2. How long did it take to see improvements? Was it only after you got full coverage?

  3. Anyone have pictures that show their meatus before and after restoration?

Any insight would be much appreciated. Hope you're all having a happy holiday season.

* meatal stenosis is a condition caused by circumcision where your meatus (the outer part of your peehole) develops scar tissue and becomes narrower due to being exposed.

Meatal stenosis or swollen glans?

My urine stream sprays and I do not know if it is being caused by meatal stenosis or swollen glans.

When flaccid, the urethra opening is extremely narrow but can be opened by pulling on the glans so the skin is not fused together. When erect the opening is visibly larger and there is a clear gap in the opening. Because of this I am unsure if it may simply be swollen glans causing the urine stream to spray.

Any help would be greatly appreciate.

Meatal stenosis

So I’m less then 24 hours in recovery.

I could piss fine when leaving the Hospital and here at home in the first few hours. However when I do go to piss/urinate now, it feels trapped, plugged or backed up. The sensation is a stinging one.

I researched a little and found out it was Meatal Stenosis, a condition where the opening or the tip of the penis becomes narrower or the passage way for the urine becomes narrower.

Should I be concerned?

Has anybody else had this? Is it normal? Does it go away?

The stinging is bare-able for now but I worry it will get worse.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Meatal stenosis and probably fossa navicularis stenosis from Lichen Sclerosus. Anybody?

Hey folks, 36M here. When I was 10 I had circumcision due to phimosis (I believe it was from LS), after that no more issues for 24 years (completely healthy penis with no itching, burning, white patches, nothing…).

So, 2 years ago I was biking and felt a sudden pain in the tip of my penis, like acid on my meatus, one of the worst pains I had in my life. The next day the top part of my meatus was itchy and white… the itchyness last for a day, I thought it was a normal healing process of a scratch or something when I was biking. I notice my meatus got a bit smaller since the top part fused together and I continued my life normally for more 2 years.

But this year the bottom part of the meatus started to close as well (I believe it was from UTI or injury during sex, not sure) and now I started to have trouble to fully empty my bladder in only one go to the washroom. I went to the urologist who diagnosed LS, gave me clob ointment and schedule a retrograde urethrogram 3 weeks from now. I know I’ll have to go through surgery, just don’t know what kind of surgery since I don’t have the exam yet… it can be meatotomy if it is just the tip or urethroplasty if it spread to the fossa navicularis.

Anybody in the same or similar situation? What to expect? Dealing with lots of anxiety lately because of it and talking to someone might help :) thank you very much πŸ™

Addressing a few concerns about meatal stenosis. (Is this the right place to post this?)

Currently I’m 16. I can get the procedure fine right?

I’ve known for a while that I’ve had inexplicable trouble with urination (frequent, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful). I didn’t know it could have been caused by circumcision.

I noticed that I do have a bit of inflamed tissue around the meatus and I always thought this was normal until I saw intact dicks in porn.

Urination has never been outright painful but it has always been uncomfortable and I’ve had trouble β€œholding it” and urinating efficiently and completely.

Are these adequate signs of meatal stenosis? I’m hesitant to ask my mother to see a urologist because of her response when I told her I was mad at her for circumcising me. Also, since coverage means the glans won’t rub against undergarments anymore, could full restoration help reverse the effects of meatal stenosis?

Anyone here has urinary striction or Meatal stenosis caused after circumcision?

I was cut 17 days ago for medical reasons. I also am suffering from a post op infection.

I confirmed the infection on day 7 with my urologist and he asked me if I had difficulty in peeing/if I had pain urinating and he told me that Meatal stenosis usually occurs when there are infections like what I have(not exactly sure what he said, but he meant that there was a good possibility I could have one). He said that I should do a urinary flow test after a few months to be sure of it.

I did feel uncomfortable peeing the next day and I felt my Meatal opening was becoming small. But I let the thought slide away because I thought I was feeling this only because the doctor had mentioned it. I said to myself it must be due my glans swelling post circumcision.

I did have difficulty peeing then and there in the course of two weeks. And i have had a slight pain at times in the past few days. It depends on the position I pee though. I usually lean over the wall and pee and in this posture I don't feel any pain.

There was a considerable amount of pain when peeing when I was standing up straight once and when I was sitting taking a dump.

Is there anyone who had similar complications of this sort? I just checked the treatment for Meatal stenosis and suggested surgery -- meatotomy looks horrible and is giving me scares. For fucksake im a 23yo virgin who never had sex. And I don't want to have this meatotomy done to me.

Meatal Stenosis and restoration?

Well I just got back from the weiner Doctor. He basically confirmed my prior beliefs. I already knew I had stenosis. Unfortunately, based on his reaction mine is pretty tight. He wants to do a surgery to slit my penis head to open it up. This is what’s been causing me to go to the bathroom every thirty minutes to an hour my whole life. I told him about my restoration. He saw the device anyway. I just started two months ago so I haven’t seen any dekeratinization yet. I told him that it might reverse but he doesn’t think so. He gave me a doctors note explaining my frequency of urination so college and jobs can’t complain about my frequent bathroom breaks. Alleviating urethral stricture/meatal stenosis

I have a urethral stricture as a result of my circumcision, and have suffered issues relating to it since I was young. I used to think it wasn't a huge issue, and it technically isn't, but I've come to recently realize it's more severe than I thought. Most of my urethral tract, from the glans down close to the base, is much narrower than average and has long restricted urine and ejaculation. I've found that going back to when I was in elementary school, I've at times had difficulty urinating. This would be particularly an issue late at night where I'd sometimes find myself having to keep getting up and going to the bathroom because the urine was not be fully expelled, and would basically get stuck. I at times also have trouble forcing urine out initially, and it can be painful. It's usually worse when I wake up, and on occasion, I'll have to wait up to 30 seconds for urine to start coming out. I frequently find bits of urine being trapped in my head or shaft, there's been all sorts of little issues with urination that are clearly abnormal. When I orgasm, my semen generally doesn't come out very strongly, it's never really come out in a projectile fashion. And I don't know when I started doing this, but I've found that most of the time, after I urinate, I end up using toilet paper to wipe my head because the remaining urine doesn't come out cleanly.

And this altogether does effect sexual functioning beyond ejaculation, just the sensation of having an abnormally narrow urethra, semen running up it, the sensation of a narrow opening upon orgasm- it's a pretty significant thing to have even that damaged in some way. I have noticed that my DTR, after usage, does widen my urethral opening and permit better urine flow, but that's just the opening. I've felt like I could hold out until I get more coverage and see what that does, but that wouldn't do much in the long run.

I went to a few doctors about this a few years ago, and nothing really came out of it. I don't remember the exact results, but there was a conflict about what could be done because I made it clear I believed this was a circumcision complication, and the doctors didn't agree. I've never been to a single doctor that isn't pro-circumcision anyway. I think I spoke to my primary care physician via a messaging service through my insurance about this early last year and they disagreed again it was abnormal. Couldn't get a reference, but I'd have to double check what they said.

AAP statement and Meatal Stenosis

After doing my million hours of research on circumcision I, like some of you I'm sure, was baffled as to how the AAP could come up with the preposterous "benefits outweigh the risks". I'm sure most of the doctors themselves are male and are circumcised. I'm sure they profit in many ways, if not directly, from the procedure. My initial thoughts were the following: The AAP has to support circumcision in order to protect the doctors performing it. (In this way it makes sense to me that the "recommendation" became more positive after circumcision started to come under attack.) The way they got to their "recommendation" was to use studies that are expressly dreamt up in order to support circumcision and then neglect to include the foreskin itself as a "benefit." That at least is plausible to me. I believe that most people, like these doctors, do not think of themselves as evil and have wrapped their brains around in some way so as to justify this practice.

Then yesterday I got to reading more about meatal stenosis. It affects around 10% of circumcised men only. Intact men don't get it. It is a constriction of the opening or urethral meatus of the penis. It can make peeing painful and once it presents the only repair is surgical. (I may not have that exactly right, but those are the basics.) How in the heck can anyone, the AAP doctors or anyone else, look at that and not come up with the result that circumcision creates serious harm? How could the AAP consider UTI's but not Meatal Stenosis? I'm no conspiracy theorist, but at this point I don't even see how those doctors could justify it to themselves.

What am I missing?

Meatal Stenosis: Will It Fix Itself After Regen?

or will it need surgical modification.

In case you don't know, the Meatus is "an opening leading to the interior of the body" (pee slit in this context), Stenosis is constriction of. It is primarily caused by circumcision due to a lack of immune responsiveness down there. the slit is especially vulnerable to infections and so the response is to minimize its size. If I've read the stats correctly (I feel like I might not have), about 20% have issues due to this, 11% ultimately need surgery.

Personally I'm part of the 20%, it hurts whenever something flows, but its not severe enough to need surgery.

My story: 5 days in hell so far:)

MOTIVATION:

Here I am, an extremely rare exhibit (I thinkone could write a medical journal paper about this case), sharing my story.

DISCLAIMER:

This case is so peculiar imo because there is no good explanation for what went wrong. I have perfect blood test results, perfect urine test results, no chronic diseases (apart from vitiligo).

THE STORY:

I just had my circumcision last Thursday, but after that I had nonstop bleeding for the entire night. Thankfully, they kept me at the hospital for the night anyway, so the staff helped me to somehow manage untill the doctor came back in the morning. After changing the bandages like 5-6 times, using hemato coagulant IV, and oxygenated water, the only solutiin left was to apply ice. I kept the ice on my dick for hours on end (while silently crying my eyes out) to the point where I was genuinely afraid of getting a frost bite. Obviously, 0 sleep that night.

On Friday morning, when the doctor came, he removed a hematome on the spot (live, without anaesthesia; it hurt like hell) and operated on me again. He said that it is the first time he encountered this complication and that he hasn't even seen it in his colleagues' patients (and he has a decently long career). They decided to keep me in the hospital a couple days more. I got a lot of antibiotics shots in the vein during this stay, to make sure I don't get an infection.

On Saturday I was looking good - no more bleeding whatsoever - so they removed the tubes; it hurt like hell. I tryed wearing underwear, but couldn't stand it; it still hurt too much. So far I didn't have any night erection pain.

On Sunday, still good, no bleeding so they removed the bandage around the cut; aparently, the doctor did some special kind of bandaging to prevent bleeding and he had to take it out himself; it hurt like hell. I also managed to wear underwear, yey. But during the night I woke up 3 or 4 times due to erections. Sleeping in the hospital was hard anyway, but this was even worse.

On Monday they sent me home. Apparently I have to continue to change my bandages for a while. I have no idea how I'm supposed ti do that. Even after all this time, when they changed a bandage it hurt horribly. Also, they always did it in pairs, looking from above. How am I supposed to do it alone, hurting, from a horizontal POV??

I also have to use some antibiotic spray 3 times a day. They scheduled me for a checkup in 2 weeks.

Now it is 3 am on Tuesday and it is the 4th time I wake up fro

Questions about the glans

Probably not too related to restoration, but it’s probably my best bet to getting my morbid curiosity satiated. Sort of weird intro aside, how come there’s a weird ring of sorts around the meatus? Besides the obvious of being there because of circumcision, wouldn’t it seem that this section shouldn’t exist because of the natural dissolving of the BPL layer in intact penises, or is it another scar that has formed because of the forceful separation of the foreskin/BPL layer from the head that had caused this. I know a little of meatal stenosis which I think is caused by the meatus or urethra shutting/narrowing in those who had been circumcised not healing properly. Additionally I’m not sure how the frenulum is removed almost consistently from the common methods, as it sits right under the head and methods usually β€œprotect” that part during circumcision. Basically if the frenular delta sits right under the part where the coronal ridge is then why don’t more people have their frenulums? I apologize in advance if these questions are epithet poorly conveyed or just that I answered them myself which is usually what I end up doing. Anyway I just wanted to know for knowledge sake, as I believe that the more knowledge we posses over the matter, the better equipped we are to preventing circumcision in the future. KOT

American politicians may be ignorant of female anatomy but American doctors are ignorant of male anatomy

You ever want proof American doctor's don't know shit about the male genitals? This is a MASSIVE hole in human rights in this country and I am sick of it being swept under the damn rug. How is this not only proof of American Medical Ignorance but misandry?

https://www.mdlinx.com/journal-summary/prevalence-and-causes-of-meatal-stenosis-in-circumcised-boys/6PbNDpUumuUwrDY0xFEXdb?fbclid=IwAR2ZH9KCHesI2krJfq-CD7Z9LM72PDg3t2bc6XZmAs2mqW2FEILLek9NDus

"Factors that were linked with the risk of stenosis development were: circumcision in the first week of life, complete adhesion of the foreskin to the glans, and the use of a healing product."

So I want to lay out what this means, To suffer from meatal stenosis (Meatal stenosis is a condition where the meatus β€” the opening of at the tip of the penis β€” becomes narrower.) You first have to have a circumcision, your foreskin has to be adhered to the glans (Normal to the 99.9%) and then had to use a healing product. So you had to have a Non-therapeutic Surgery, have normal genitals, and like usual get a healing product. No the cause of Meatal Stenosis is NOT normal genitals but the fracking surgery you forced on an infant!

This is almost as bad as the study trying to figure out why nature made the circumcised penis the way it is...at least there those poor people were operating under ignorance...this is medical and scientific malpractice.

"The foreskin will have separated in many one-year-olds, and 90 per cent of four-year-old boys will have a separated foreskin. However, for some children, the separation may not happen until puberty."

100 years from now, I believe most Americans will have the same visceral reaction to circumcision as they do to FGM.

TL:DR I think this will be Americans in the future [https://i.redd.it/gac80v8wtfe31.jpg]

When you think Female Genital Mutilation, you get a nasty hit in your gut because of the suffering that was inflicted on a child for reasons that will make any normal person livid beyond measure. I wonder where that visceral reaction is to Male Genital Mutilation of infant boys? Is the word "circumcision" enough to soften the blow that much?

Disregarding truly medical circumcision procedures for both male and female cases that need it, some people think FGM is not comparable at all to MGM and most of them don't even know about less invasive forms of FGM being a ritual prick with a needle to draw a drop of blood. This is rightfully labeled a mutilation, yet the complete removal of so much prepuce tissue is considered a minor surgery for infants who somehow can get through it easier than adults with all the medicine and safety nets their grown body can take.

The hygiene origin myth is another way to legitimize MGM, even though it is also used to promote FGM as well. You don't cut up genitals to keep them clean somehow, you cut up genitals to alter, affect, and adverse use of the genitals and the sexuality of it's owner.

History of Circumcision part 1: https://archive.ph/FfkYQ

History of Circumcision part 2: https://archive.ph/OUIbu

An unpopular aspect of circumcision/MGM will be that it is genital alteration without informed consent.

Adults can get full anesthesia and can request the exact amount of tissue to be removed from their developed penis. The doctor is shooting in the dark for how much tissue to remove from an infant penis he has no clue how it will develop later on. Infants would be under pain from the bare minimum anesthesia and the open wound that is burning from urine and risking infection from feces inside the diaper. Regardless, the exposed urethra will be taking in contaminants and likely suffer meatal stenosis.

If you keep your son intact, and he does grow up to have insufficient self-esteem and succumbs to a genital cutting society’s circumcision views, he can always get it removed. If you circumcise him, and he realizes he lost his ridged band and possibly his frenulum, he can’t ever get his foreskin back, until r/Foregen makes it happen. His body is his and his only to cosmetically alter when he is able to consent as an adult.

Some common cosmetic complications that most cut men

A copy pasta essay I made about circumcision, briefly covering many of the main points. Good introduction to why you should care about this.

76% + males are circumcised in America (1), with 30% in Canada (2), 20% in Australia (3), and 9% in the UK (55). Circumcision is actually the most common surgery performed worldwide, 39% of males are circumcised (4), mostly for religious reasons (68)

Considering America has the highest circumcision rate in the developed world, you would expect their STD rate to be lower, if it did offer protection,. However, America has the highest rate of STDs in the developed world(56).

Circumcision has been repeatedly proven harmful and to have very limited medical benefit (69, 70). The VMMC Drive (Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Drive) in Africa has shown no appreciable, attributable benefits (5, 86) according to a recent review. Here are direct quotes from a study published in nature 26 October 2021:

"As summarized above, surveillance data indicate that HIV incidence was declining in most of the priority ESA countries before the large-scale rollout of VMMC began [12,13,14]. Moreover, these data provide no evidence of substantial changes in the downward trending trajectories of HIV incidence to support the argument that VMMC has had a significant role in reducing HIV infections in priority countries. Although a recent systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that VMMC is β€œan important evidence-based intervention for the control of generalized HIV epidemics”, [9] as presented below, we did not find convincing evidence that VMMC has had a significant effect on reducing HIV incidence at the population level."

"Borgdorff et al. [25] used data from a health and demographic surveillance system (HDSS) in Kenya to determine trends in HIV prevalence and incidence between 2011 and 2016. They found that, overall, HIV incidence declined over the surveillance period. They also found that while having a circumcised male partner was protective for women and girls, the protective effect of circumcision was not significant for incident HIV infection among men and boys. **Borgdorff et al. [25] concluded that β€œthe decline of HIV prevalence and incidence cannot be directly attributed to increasing ART and VMMC coverage. Other explanatory factors might include the natural history of the HIV epidemic in eastern Africa, which showed declines of HIV incidence even before the onset of large-scale ART use and expanding VMMC coverage”. This claim is consistent with the data presented in the preceding section and, as further illustrated below by Makhema et al. [26],

Extreme pain after urinating

Currently on day 6 of recovery. Circed due to pinhole phimosis. First few days after surgery peeing was generally not that painful. Around day 3 or 4 I started getting an extreme pinching pain right after I finish urinating. Almost as if my urethra is too tight and I’m squeezing the urine out. Progressively has gotten worse over the past couple days to the point where the pain is unbearable. Doctor said it’s most likely because the head is still β€œraw” but sent me for a uralysis any way to confirm no infection.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience ? I’m assuming it’s due to the swelling and inflammation. I’m worried that it’s possibly a urethral stricture or meatal stenosis which I have been reading about. No idea how concerned I should be. My urine stream is also pretty wel the same as before surgery which little surprised by.

The complications of MGM and FGM are actually quite similar, contrary to what many say

It is often claimed that the complications of MGM and FGM are incomparable and completely differ in terms of severity. However, a careful analysis of the various health risks and complications of both procedures uncover many similarities.

The WHO lists these long-term outcomes for FGM:

  • severe pain
  • excessive bleeding (haemorrhage)
  • genital tissue swelling
  • fever
  • infections e.g., tetanus
  • urinary problems
  • wound healing problems
  • injury to surrounding genital tissue
  • shock
  • death
  • urinary problems (painful urination, urinary tract infections);
  • vaginal problems (discharge, itching, bacterial vaginosis and other infections);
  • menstrual problems (painful menstruations, difficulty in passing menstrual blood, etc.);
  • scar tissue and keloid;
  • sexual problems (pain during intercourse, decreased satisfaction, etc.);
  • increased risk of childbirth complications (difficult delivery, excessive bleeding, caesarean section, need to resuscitate the baby, etc.) and newborn deaths;
  • need for later surgeries: for example, the sealing or narrowing of the vaginal opening (Type 3) may lead to the practice of cutting open the sealed vagina later to allow for sexual intercourse and childbirth (deinfibulation). Sometimes genital tissue is stitched again several times, including after childbirth, hence the woman goes through repeated opening and closing procedures, further increasing both immediate and long-term risks;
  • psychological problems (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, low self-esteem, etc.)

The Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) notes that many complications of male circumcision are known, including:

  • infections
  • bleeding
  • sepsis
  • necrosis
  • fibrosis of the skin
  • urinary tract infections
  • meningitis
  • herpes infections
  • meatitis
  • meatal stenosis
  • necrosis and necrotizing complications
  • complete amputation of the penis
  • psychological problems
  • extreme pain experiences in newborns causing behavioral changes which are still apparent years later

And other academic sources have provided an even more comprehensive outlook on the complications of circumci

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Urine jet

How can I tell the difference between normal urination problems (due to swelling) and a possible meatal stenosis caused by the circumcision? Im on day 13 after a radical circumcision and since yesterday I have troubles to urinate proper. The stream is super thin and I can feel like my glans prevents it from flowing straight through it. I should mention that I don’t put any dressings on since yesterday. Can there be a connection?

Surgical Consultation Preparation

Hello everyone! I have my consultation tomorrow for peritoneal flap vaginoplasty and I have my notes here on what I will want to go over. Since I know surgeon's time is scarce, I want to get as much out of this time as I can.

I thought I would share it here for review. What am I missing? Thoughts? Things that could be improved?

Preparation

  • What is your hair removal template?
  • Ideal physical condition?
    • Is it good to be flexible? Strong?
    • Pelvic floor physical therapy?
    • Cardio for perfusion?
    • Best BMI?
    • Should I quit drinking tea? (I drink a lot of tea.)
  • Total cost out of pocket for my insurer.
  • What should my care plan look like?
    • Incision care, up in your business
    • Clean, vaseline, ice, look for basic errors
    • What else?
  • If I wanted to purchase a set of dilators in advance so they seem less intimidating and mysterious, what would you recommend?

Logistics

  • Time in hospital
  • Time before flight
  • Duties of primary care taker on leaving hospital
    • 2-3 nights at hospital
  • Dilation schedule: what exactly does it look like
    • where is there give and not give
    • complications when dilation is not adequate
  • How long does packing stay in
    • feels like shit until it comes out, sometimes
  • How long does the catheter stay in?
  • What does recovery tend to look like for people?
    • What will pain management look like?
    • On a scale of 1-10 how much pain do people experience?
    • When can you expect pain to start tapering off?
    • During peak pain what measures are available.
  • What will activity restrictions look like?

Asks for Data

  • May I see your non-public portfolio?
  • Do you keep data on your complication rates?
    • I just need the objective data, not help making decisions.
    • Compare to baselines
      • Neto, 13 Year Review of Surgical Outcomes, provides some data, but it seems like a lot
        • https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22397771/
        • 40% Progressive obstructive voiding disorder due to meatal stenosis
        • 15% Stricture of introitus
        • 3% Rectal injury
        • 33% wound healing disordered
        • Adhesions?
        • what if the graft doesn't take?
        • Rate of incontinence?
  • Do you use the WHO Surgical Safety checklist?
  • I had a 23 And Me assay and some of the raw data indicated potential surgical medication intolerances.
    • Can you send me a list of typical medications used so I can cross-reference my repo

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚

A write up I made for the Ologies subreddit.

Is anyone else dissappointed that the Phallology episode didn't mention circumcision? I was...

I thought that it was a massive oversight considering how 76% + males are circumcised in America (1), with 30% in Canada (2) and 20% in Australia (3)

It is the most common surgery performed in the world! 39% of males worldwide are circumcised (4).

I was disappointed.

Circumcision has been repeatedly proven harmful and to have no medical benefit. The VMMC (Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision) in Africa has shown no appreciable, attributable benefit (5) in a recent review.

[26], suggests that there are likely many factors responsible for reductions in HIV incidence where they occur, and it is simplifying and misleading to assert (since the evidence is weak) that VMMC initiatives are a major determinan

The complications of MGM and FGM are actually quite similar, contrary to what many say

It is often claimed that the complications of MGM and FGM are incomparable and completely differ in terms of severity. However, a careful analysis of the various health risks and complications of both procedures uncover many similarities.

The WHO lists these long-term outcomes for FGM:

  • severe pain
  • excessive bleeding (haemorrhage)
  • genital tissue swelling
  • fever
  • infections e.g., tetanus
  • urinary problems
  • wound healing problems
  • injury to surrounding genital tissue
  • shock
  • death
  • urinary problems (painful urination, urinary tract infections);
  • vaginal problems (discharge, itching, bacterial vaginosis and other infections);
  • menstrual problems (painful menstruations, difficulty in passing menstrual blood, etc.);
  • scar tissue and keloid;
  • sexual problems (pain during intercourse, decreased satisfaction, etc.);
  • increased risk of childbirth complications (difficult delivery, excessive bleeding, caesarean section, need to resuscitate the baby, etc.) and newborn deaths;
  • need for later surgeries: for example, the sealing or narrowing of the vaginal opening (Type 3) may lead to the practice of cutting open the sealed vagina later to allow for sexual intercourse and childbirth (deinfibulation). Sometimes genital tissue is stitched again several times, including after childbirth, hence the woman goes through repeated opening and closing procedures, further increasing both immediate and long-term risks;
  • psychological problems (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, low self-esteem, etc.)

The Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) notes that many complications of male circumcision are known, including:

  • infections
  • bleeding
  • sepsis
  • necrosis
  • fibrosis of the skin
  • urinary tract infections
  • meningitis
  • herpes infections
  • meatitis
  • meatal stenosis
  • necrosis and necrotizing complications
  • complete amputation of the penis
  • psychological problems
  • extreme pain experiences in newborns causing behavioral changes which are still apparent years later

And other academic sources have provided an even more comprehensive outlook on the complications of circumci
