A list of puns related to "Mail Server"
I want to host my own mail server in my home network, but have a dynamic DNS, no uptime guarantee, and in any case I definitely don't want to expose it to the internet through port forwarding.
I was thinking I could do this with MailCow and an email relay, but the ones I find online like sendgrid or mailgun only talk about sending email, not receiving it, or need a webhook to forward the received email.
Is there a service which could be setup for cheap to receive email for arbitrary mailboxes and arbitrary domains for cheap, which would then be polled by Mailcow to download the email, then delete it from their service?
My main domain is with a reputable specialized email host, but want a cheap way to setup alternate domains for testing and side projects. I am not looking to send too many emails, but might want to setup some kind of mailing list at some point. I'm not too concerned about the privacy, or even reliability (within reason), as long as it can guarantee mail availability for at least 24h and email I send through them will not be blocked by gmail or outlook.
Hi all, I was wondering what I can do to get mail from my self hosted server actually delivered. Every single email server health checker and spam checker I could find says my domain is set up correctly, DNS records, DMARC, DKIM, etc etc. At the beginning everything was fine, I would end up in spam sometimes (except for Comcast who blocked me from the start), but that was it. About a year later my emails basically guaranteed would end up in spam. A couple weeks ago my server got entirely blocked by gmail: > host gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com said: 550-5.7.1 The IP you're using to send mail is not authorized to 550-5.7.1 send email directly to our servers. Please use the SMTP relay at your 550-5.7.1 service provider instead. I host my mailserver using a DigitalOcean droplet, who obviously doesn't have any mail relay servers. I suspect there was some bad actor on the IP range where my droplet happened to be. What can I do? I don't really want to spend even more money on a service just to RELAY my emails. If it really comes down to it I'll probably end finding a cheap service where I can use a custom domain, but it seems pretty bleak that even someone who is able to set up their own email server can't without being blocked by every mail provider under the sun. It's even worse that I've been running fine on my own mail server just fine for about a year and a half and only now am I having trouble with it. Anyways, any suggestions? Thanks.
What do you guys use for a mail server or mail relay for all of your locally self-hosted apps that need to be able to send an occasional email (alerts usually)?
I don't need to receive any mail from the internet, just locally inside my LAN, and then forward it on to Gmail or whatever.
Hey All, Can some suggest a good budget UPS for one server with an auto-shutdown feature I mean, when there is a power outage, the server should hold for few minutes and the UPS should send a signal to the server to shutdown it down if the power is not restored.
Thanks.
I am troubleshooting my debian email server because it cannot send any emails. I attempted to send to a couple different popular email services and it is not sent at all. It can, however, recieve mail normally.
From the logs:postfix/smtp[15024]: connect to

At first i thought that maybe port 25 is closed or filtered by my host. Sure enough, I tried to traceroute and this is the result:$ traceroute -n -T -p 25
gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
traceroute to
gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com
(
64.233.189.26
), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets1 * * *2 * * *3 * * *4 * * *5 * * *
and so on, which would imply that.
However, when I try to connect through telnet
from my personal machine, it says that the connection was successful. Moreover, my host confirmed that port 25 was opened after I had requested it, so I'm stuck here unable to understand why I cannot send any mail.

Anyone found a good Mail Server add on for HA?
Or recommendations for a Docker I can deploy?
Does anyone have experience configuring haproxy -> postfix, specifically iredmail? I'm talking about a simple configuration
Haproxy -> 2 x mail server (one active, one backup) with SSL termination on Haproxy.
What values should be used for timeouts, any special options? besides tcplog for IMAP, POP3, SMTP. Should I try to terminate ssl on the haproxy or directly on iredmail?
Right now I have a cfg:

I am going to purchase a domain, and then have emails such as amazon@mydomain.com or discord@mydomain.com . Is it worth it to host my own mail server on a VPS, or just pay a provider to host for me?
I have experience setting up local DNS server, local firewall rules, SSH server with keys, NTP server, Bash shell scripting. I had fun setting these up, but I hear that email server can be painful, especially if your personal emails aren't working properly.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm an amateur... As I said, I added the bank's email address to my contacts, but I don't see any other relevant settings in my webmail or on my box's admin page. Thanks for any help!
I checked the domain on MX Toolbox's blacklist check, and it isn't listed at all, FWIW.
Have had mail server running for years. Now all of a sudden nothing coming in.
I can telnet into the mail server from the outside. So firewall is OK and forwarding the ports. And the server is running. I then tried wormly.com to run a few tests, and seems something is amiss in the users I'm guessing. Results of wormly sending an email:
SMTP ERROR: RCPT TO command failed
I have 2 other Synology NAS'es. Is there an *easy* way to just move the mail server over to one of the others? (Using local users not LDAP, so I'm sure I'd have to recreate those users on the second NAS.) . I've tried a few reboots.
TIA
Fixed:
LOL . Found the issue: the DNS for the NAS got screwed up. Fat fingered the IP address
Thanks all!
I'm testing Digital Ocean for the first time and setting up the droplet was pretty easy, but I'm wondering how to deal with emails.
I get the idea of doing everything how you'd like it, but since setting up email with "classic" hosting providers took up to 3 minutes, here it seems a bit overwhelming. Anyone has any tips? (Preferably without any external solutions like Zoho).
Trying to use sendmail for our website (domain.tld
). I have rDNS configured and when sending to our old domain (old-domain.tld
, name@old-domain.tld
) everything works just fine β the mail is relayed sent by sendmail as intended.
When I try to send to name@domain.tld
, sendmail rejects the mail, because sendmail rightfully says it cannot find a user with that email on the system. I tried setting up relaying unknown users to our on-prem mail server mail.old-domain.tld
, which allows unauthenticated relays for internal domains. But for that to work I have to relay to the server directly (MX record points to a security gateway)
However setting up the relay results in recipient mails being rewritten from name@domain.tld
to name@mail.old-domain.tld
and I is therefore rejected by our mail server. Tried various settings in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc
, but just cannot get it to work the intended way.
Already looked at O'Reillys sendmail, but didn't really find anything for that matter. Really feel like I know nothing about Linux again after sinking 4hrs into sendmail and not getting to any result.
I tried adding the following to sendmail.mc
define(`MAIL_HUB', `mail.old-domain.tld.')dnl
define(`LOCAL_RELAY', `mail.old-domain.tld.')dnl
# later added:
define(`LUSER_RELAY', `mail.old-domain.tld')dnl
# alternatively I tried:
define(`SMART_HOST',`mail.old-domain.tld) dnl
My /etc/hosts
β think everything should be fine here
127.0.0.1 localhost cvm-lnx5
127.0.0.1 domain.tld www.domain.tld
On my Debian Linux Server i am running multiple Docker Compose Container, including Nextcloud and Git. I want to be able to send emails from the containers, for resetting a password for example or git request notifications. How can i make my docker containers able to send mails?
Right now the server itself is able to send mails via mail command and postfix server, but if i understand correctly that does not make my containers able to send mails. I would need a mail server in every docker container seperately. I would highly appreciate a solution which i can integrate in my docker-compose setup.
I'm running an NSD authoritative name server and Postfix mail server. Wondering if I need to create a keypair and a DKIM record for just the native hostname for the mail server? Or do I need to make a set for each and every virtual domain the mail server can send/receive for?
I've seen a few people commenting on this same issue, but figured I've give my story about getting mail locked on a PVP/RPPVP server.
Me and the boys decided to re-roll Horde onto a different server for TBC. All good, but I have a few Alliance there. My plan was to move them in to the Classic Era, then delete them in the TBC client. Boy how easily my plans were messed up.
Come maintenance I login to clear my mail, move gold around, etc. All good so far.
This morning I log in and start moving my Alliance on our new server into the Classic Era. All good so far.
I log into TBC and start deleting them. No problem up until I get to the last two when I see this awful message. Not so good.
Impossible, I cleared my mail before I logged. I hop over to Classic Era and find this in my mailbox. Not so good.
So I do what any thick skulled player would do, open a support ticket. And lo and below, this lovely auto generated response. I've obviously kept the ticket open and responded that this solution will not work.
So now the server that all my pals are playing on is fully bricked, and I can't even use the Dark Portal pass I bought because I cannot create a character. I'm thinking of refunding the dark portal pass and subscription because of this, because it's pretty taken out any hype I've had.
tld;dr - Gold selling spammer sent me mail in between me clearing mail and maintenance. Can't play for the next 30 days on my friends server.
just wanted to do a mental check and see if others see anything wrong for what i am about to deploy
setting up a mail server but to find that my Static IP from my isp is under 2Block lists and contacted them about it and they said that you have to run it in the cloud
i want my mail server / data to be onsite
my diagram of how i think it should work
UI>CloudFlare>VPS>=wireguard vpn=>Mail server on Lan
main point of concern is the vpn part from Mail server being a client and the vps doing the port forwarding and routing of the mail / it being able to talk with the internet
The claim is legitimate. In that the credit card was used and I havenβt paid it. But my soon to be ex-wife racked up $10k in credit card charges within the month I found out she cheated on me and when I was pushing for marriage counseling. And obviously Iβve already filed for divorce. Her lawyer is saying sheβll be responsible for it and it will be part of the final divorce settlement.
I talked to my divorce lawyer and he recommended not pursuing it. I very highly disagree though. If I was home I would have been a room over and probably had a gun pointed at him within a few seconds of when this happened. He pressed my doorbell and within two seconds he tried my doorknob and opened it.
Iβm in PA. Iβm wondering if I should file a police report.
So I am hosting multiple apps with docker and not all of them support direct notification to those that I use like telegram and discord. Most of them only supports sending notification through smtp. Is there an app or container that can receive mail and forward them through telegram or discord? I am looking to write this myself on python since there's a library called apprise that supports sending notification to most notification channels that I use, so I just need to work the smtp server and formatting the notification.
My ISP - Crapcast - blocks both inbound and outbound on port 25. I learnt this the hard way when I was 90% of the way to setting up Simplelogin. I was able to solve the outbound mail by switching to SMTP Relay and able to successfully send emails from SimpleLogin. But inbound email is a problem. Is there a way create a relay like setup for MX mail receiving? I have access to the two free VMs from Oracle to get started.
EDIT: I should clarify a couple of items here
- Sending email out is not a problem. I got that figured using an SMTP Provider.
- I am doing this purely as an exercise in seeing how far I can get with my home lab setup.
Hello, i recently upgraded my vps from one big hetzner server that i bought on the "serverbΓΆrse" to two small vps and one big from netcup. The big one im going to use for my gameserver hosting for friends, my zabbix host and seafile. Now im thinking of moving my Mailserver and dont really know where to put it. From the docs of mailcow the server should atleast have 20G without the mails and basic cpu setup. Small netcup vps has only 20G of general disk space. Should i move my mailcow instance now to the big one or can i maybe setup postfix etc myself on the small on and keep it running in a simple setup? Btw: i dont wanna hear "dont host your own mailserver its pain bla bla bla" i know it and im dedicated to manage it if i need to =) Thanks in advance!
Edit: since i guess i wrote it a bit messy - does anyone have experience with mailcow and how much disk space i really need for that? Also does anyone have experience with setting up a mailserver himself - are there any benefits over using a container like mailcow?
So this is the first time I setup a whm on a vps from scratch. The PROBLEM is that the emails from cpanel are not working either ways (sending or receiving). I'm kinda nope in mail server. The dns records in Cloudflare shows nothing about mx records or any mail configuration.
Is there any guide online to setup such a thing, I have been googling for about three days now, I'm afraid I messed thing up to the worst
Thanks in advance
I have MailPlus Server 2.2.0-0955 running on DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 2. All mail is relayed in and out to an external server, some users are on that server and some are local to the Synology.
My problem is when sending via the Synology to a user on the same domain the Synology returns the error >An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: >5.1.1 <user@domain.co.uk>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table. >Please check the message recipient "user@domain.co.uk" and try again."
I need the MailPlus Server to forward all mail to the external server for delivery. I cannot find a way to do this within DSM/MailPlus Server directly. So I could edit the Postfix main.cf
file, but this is overwritten when the server starts. Editing /var/packages/MailPlus-Server/target/etc/template/main.template
doesn't seem to work, these changes persist but are ignored or the original lines stay so my options are not set.
The lines I am trying to add are;
mydestination = localhost
local_recipient_maps =
I believe this will do what I want, but as I have yet to get anything to work I cannot confirm if this even fixes the issue yet. Ideally I would like an option in the GUI for forward all mail for unknown local recipients to the SMTP server that all the other mail is sent to
and I believe what I'm doing with the config would achieve that.
So here's an odd one -
Our development group has been using Bmail to send a file to a DL - they've been doing this for years. We moved the process to a different server and now the message is being refused because it's being seen as an external sender and the DL can't receive external email.
The error I see in the message tracking log is "Sender not authenticated for group; authentication required"
It's a head-scratcher.
Howdy - I've got a weird problem that I'm puzzled about.
Recently ran up a 2-server PMG cluster, all going fairly smoothly inbound and out.
Came to the point of preparing the outbound IP switching automation, and realised it was going to be tough. Setting the smtp_bind_address/6 in main.cf does the trick, though it needs to be amended via the template engine in order to not be over-written by Proxmox day-to-day.
Problem is that when you use the template engine, the Postfix config (generated with the now-present template file) is propagated to all nodes in the cluster.
Looking into the smtp_bind_address manual and others encountering similar dilemmas, in a normal situation the option is usable once the interfaces are clearly defined to Postfix. No dramas there. It's also usable in this instance, though the option requires an IP address - it won't accept an interface or alias (ie. eth#:#) which would've made it cluster-friendly.
So when we make the amendments on each server and commit them (then restart services, etc), master's version (and specifically defined sending IP) is made live on the other node, meaning only 1x PMG server is operational outbound.
There's no fancy transport mapping in-place on the cluster, all mail is classed the same.
Is there a way to get around this? Am I missing something obvious?
Hopefully someone has a way around this one!
Many thanks,
Bastian
