how would i purposefully 'macroblock' a video file?

doing some work with the disintegration of video through corruption of files and compression. i'm familiar with how to datamosh, but was wondering if there were any other ways to implement compression artefacts into videos (macroblocking, mosquito noise etc). would it be a simple process of exporting videos at low bitrates or is there a better way?

thanks in advance

Image quality on PC app β€” blacks don’t look right/macroblocking

What can I do to improve image quality via the PC app? The image quality via Shield Tv is miraculous, however on my PC it clearly looks like a video stream with dark blacks looking blocky in some spots/some blur. It almost feels like the color range may not be displaying correctly..? Is that possible? I am using 5GHz via a Wi-Fi 6 router and capable pc. Wired would be possible in theory but I feel like this issue is unrelated to bandwidth. Can anyone advise?

Flashing near-black artifacts and macroblocks in 2018 LG oleds

Hi,

Just wanted to spread the word that many, if not all, 2018 LG oleds have a processing flaw that did not exist in previous years models.

The issue is flashing near-black artifacts. When playing certain content, artifacts and macroblocks can be seen brightly flashing in dark scenes, and these artifacts and macroblocks disappear when you press pause. When you press play again, the flashing starts again. The artifacts are in the source; however, the TV is for some reason making them flash brightly.

This effect can be seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sl_t3UQ3gAk

That clip is from episode 8, season 2, of The Handsmaids Tale, around the 46 minute mark. It does appear to be a processing issue, as two 'workarounds' are possible, if you use madVR:

  1. If that episode is sent to the TV as bt.2020 instead of bt.709, there is no artifact flashing. However this does result in colours being 'wrong' <this strongly points to this being a processing issue!>

or

  1. Have madVR dither to 5bit, which also mitigates the problem

I am not sure if this only affects 2018 with the A9 processor, or whether the B8 is also affected.

I know the usual response is "it's the source", but this issue is being caused by the TV's processing. Please can all 2018 LG oled owners test their TVs for this issue. The Handsmaids Tale scene is excellent to test for this. If you see brightly flashing artifacts and macroblocks during that scene, which disappear when you press pause, then your panel is also affected by this issue.

Preventing Macroblock Artifacts?

Hi all,

I've been struggling with this issue for some time and I'm hoping someone here may be able to help point out where I'm going wrong with my encodes.

I'm encoding a 720x480, 25fps progressive source (converted from an NTSC DVD in Avisynth). I've used both x264 & x265 encodes using every trick I can think of, but there always seems to be a frame or two during playback that will randomly show corrupted macroblock artifacts (VLC on Android P).

So far, the only settings that appear to have lessened the corruption issue are playing with "min-keyint" & "keyint".

I've included my current script as an example. Ideas?

ffmpeg -i "D:\test_input.avs" -sn ^
-framerate 25 ^
-aspect 4:3 ^
-c:v libx265 ^
-g 250 -bf 2 ^
-x265-params "level-idc=5.1:high-tier=1:crf=20:no-strong-intra-smoothing=true:vbv-bufsize=160000:vbv-maxrate=160000:min-keyint=5:keyint=15:scenecut=0" ^
-vf colormatrix=bt601:bt709 ^
-tune grain ^
-preset slow ^
-vsync 0 ^
-threads 12 ^
-c:a aac -b:a 96k -ac 1 ^
-f matroska "D:\test_encode.mkv"

IWTL all the nitty-gritty about video. Codecs, compression methods, macroblocks, mod16, P frames, streaming, deinterlacing, etc.

I want to learn about the technical aspects of video -- how different codecs and formats differ from one another, the parts that make up video, how streaming and capturing works, what comb filters and interlacing do exactly, and so on. Is there some kind of website, book, or instructional series that goes over these subjects assuming you're a layman or beginner? Short of actually taking filmography, editing or computer science courses, how do I learn about video?

LG CX internal app vs. nvidia shield macroblocking

Does anyone know why the nvidia shield handles this scene perfectly compared to the internal app on LG CX? All updated FW, cinema home PM, same bitrates, wired.

It is a scene from Dracula series on Netflix (dolby vision) S1E2 at 1:12:35 mark when the scene transitions to a black screen. First pic is the lg app and second pic is the shield. Isn’t the shield doing tv led dolby vision, so why would the internal app have this obvious macroblocking but shield does not?

Macroblocking in Cyberpunk

So the macroblocking effects when playing games with a lot of dark areas are pretty bad. But some scenes are just straight up terrible. (I added the stats from Stadia+ plugin for reference)

It's not just Cyberpunk, but all darker Stadia games on my PC with external monitor. It's much better with the CCU+TV, but I prefer mouse and keyboard for Cyberpunk.

Any suggestions? I am not using Pro at the moment, so forcing 4k is not an option right now.

LG CX 48 Macroblocking / hideous grainy problem appearing in near black scenes

I've read like 5 other posts on this topic and 90% of the responses are just "bad source." It is 100% not a bad source for me. I am using high quality locally downloaded video files and this problem does not occur on 3 other displays that I own.

Any ideas?

Looks very similar to this where it happens, although it is on a smaller scale. It tends to appear near shadowy areas when there is movement / a transition in the black levels from whatever video I'm watching. Really really distracting and not OK for a $1600 display. I have played with the brightness, OLED light, and contrast options. They have an effect on where / when exactly it appears but it still happens very noticeably at every reasonable dialing in of the settings (you know, where the screen is not literally just black).

There is clear banding when greys are displayed as well but I hear that's normal for OLEDs? Doesn't piss me off anywhere near as much but just throwing this in here for more opinions on how normal it is.

LG CX Near black artefacts and Macroblocking

When watching content on Netflix with Dolby vision on Cinema Home, I’m getting really bad artefacts and macroblocking in dark scenes. Bright scenes look amazing and perfect but it just seems anything a little too dark I usually notice something graphically messing up. I was watching something with a fire in a scene and it sort of resembled a barcode it was doing it so bad. It done it on a lot of Disney content too. Any fix for this?

EDIT: Changing the picture mode from Cinema Home to Cinema completely fixed it, There is no macroblocking or Artefacts, Thanks to everyone for the help!

LG CX Macroblocking/Artifacts dark scenes SDR content

Hi, I've been seeing a lot of artifacts, sometimes flashing in very dark scenes. It's happening on HD (SDR) content over streaming apps like HBO, FXNOW, and even Netflix. Is this a result of streaming compression? I've used a roku ultra and apple tv, as well as a C8 and they all seem to be showing similar things.

I know some apps have bad bit rate, but what I'm seeing just looks horrible. An example is the first scene in Get Out on FXNOW app, but basically any SDR content that starts to get very dark I see the blotchy patches.

Kind of looks like this https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED/comments/i0yh3n/macroblocking_on_lg_cx_oled/

Is there anything I can do?

I wish Stadia streamed 1080p at a better quality

You can easily see the blocky artefacts all over the place in dark scenes or when there is smoke or fog... on a 50" TV on Shield. Excellent connection on the app.

GeForce Now wins in that comparison with zero blockiness.

I hope Google works on that as it's very obvious.
