What recs do you have for general reading in linguistic anthropology?

I am a high-school Spanish teacher, and I am proposing a course that will let us explore the world’s languages (not just the ones we teach at the school). I recently discovered that a lot of what I was thinking of covering may fall under linguistic anthropology. My working list of topics is basics of language/linguistics, kinship terms and the grammar of social interactions (informal/formal, relatives/non-relatives…), writing and counting systems, gender (both grammatical and as it relates to sex), and colors.

I have a number of books I’m working my way through, but as I continue to prepare myself (I have studied some linguistics but do not have a degree in it) and resources for my students, what books/videos do you recommend I explore?

Thank you!

Thoughts on linguistic anthropology

I’ve been thinking about issues regarding language documentation and revitalization. The whole concept of anthropologically studying peoples from the ivory towers of academia doesn’t sit right and idk it has this air of condescension around it. Someone asked what I liked about indigenous languages and I said: they have neat features, it’s important for linguistic diversity and many are unlikely to survive. So they replied oh yeah so it’s like endangered animals. I don’t think they meant it in a dehumanizing way but it’s seriously making me think: how do we study indigenous languages without exoticizing them? Should we just leave them be/ has the damage of colonialism been done? Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense.

_____ is to anthropology as WALS is to linguistics?

https://wals.info/feature maps linguistic features around the globe; you can pick a feature (e.g. tonal versus non-tonal languages) and see which is most common, where in the world they occur, etc.

Is there a site like this for anthropology? Has someone put anthro features (e.g. circumcision, matrilineal/patrilineal, polygamy/monogamy, etc.) on a map like this?

Thanks

Anthropology + Linguistics + Japanese?

Hello,

So I will be going back to school this coming 2022 fall after about ten years of not being in school. My ultimate goal is to teach English in Japan, and I believe learning linguistics can help me explain concepts better, etc. plus I just like linguistics (as a bonus). Secondly, I love anthropology, specifically language acquisition, which again is why I've paired it with Linguistics. Now, my biggest question here is, since a second language is a requirement for either major, to just simply major and minor in one or the other. I'm thinking of majoring in anthro since it's broad spectrum, minoring in linguistics so I have a base, and (probably) minoring in Japanese.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Feel free to ask any questions because I know y'all probably have some.

Thanks a bunch. Peace!

Linguistics is a discipline of anthropology but supervisor wants an anthropologist's work for the topic of lexical borrowing.

Ok so i kind of feel dumb while posting it but, I'm a student of anthropology and in my university it's compulsory to do a thesis. I've chosen to do mine on lexical borrowing but I'm kind of lost because I did find tons of relevant work and made research questions but my supervisor asked me to find work of anthropologists on lexical borrowing. Not just linguistics but lexical borrowing. I've been reading books and articles on the topic but I haven't come across work of an anthropologist in particular on lexical borrowing... Any help or any idea where I can find the work? I know linguistics is a Field of anthropology but my supervisor specifically wants the work of an anthropologist to be included in literature review. Ps. I haven't submitted the synopsis yet because of the issues. I don't know how it works in other countries, but here, anthropology is quite rare and social sciences in general are not common, so I can't really ask someone here. I'm quite confused

Best introduction to paleo-anthropology/human genetics for someone with a linguistics background?

I did my undergraduate degree in linguistics, and one of the most interesting parts was learning what the distribution of modern languages can tell us about ancient population movements (e.g. the spread of Indo-European speakers across Eurasia, etc.). However, in recent years, a large portion of such research has been invoking genetic evidence as well, and on that topic I'm woefully underqualified. I'm hoping somebody might be able to point me to a good introductory book on human genetics or paleo-anthropology, that can help me understand the general contours of humanity's various early migrations, and give me some ability to judge arguments based on this information when they arise in linguistics. Any help is very much appreciated!

Anthropology vs Linguistics Major?

The Career Thread is Archived ^hence ^this ^post

Hello, I’m applying to college next year, and I’m torn between applying as an Anthro vs. Ling major.

My interests include cognition, human-computer interaction, physical anthropology, cognitive science, etc. At the moment, I plan on going to grad school for either CogSci or HCI, or possibly going to med or law school.

My grades are strong in the social sciences, as by the time I’ll graduate I’ll have multiple AP’s in those subjects (Gov/History/HumanGeo).

English is strong too, but I’ll only have one AP English class by the time I graduate. Same with my foreign language (I’ll take AP Latin as a senior).

My extracurriculars are fairly bland- music, scouts, volunteering (120+ hrs), and some environmental and history related projects (for example, I made a history-based nature preserve in my town that consists of 50 acres of ancient Native American land).

What major would you all suggest?

Thanks!

Edit: I think I’ll never get into a university as a linguistics or even a anthropology major (since my English and Latin is lacking).

:( any advice?

Anthropology/Linguistics Double Major useless?

Hey guys, I'm a new transfer to UCSD, and I originally came in as a General Linguistics major, but was enticed by the Anthropology department's honors program, which is required for some grad programs. I am now seriously considering Double majoring in Anthropology and Linguistics: Language Studies (French). I am coming into the university with two AA degrees, one of them being a French AA, and I feel like sticking to learning another language is an important skill to keep cultivating, especially in the field of Anthropology. Linguistics and anthropology already merge often in the field, so I think it only makes sense to pair Anthro. With Ling (French) rather than a straight up French program, I will be able to keep strengthening my skills in French, without extra cultural/historical bs essentially irrelevant to learning the language. What do y'all think? Is this justifiable? Thanks <3

Books about Linguistic Anthropology

A small while back I took an intro to linguistic anthropology course for a quarter in uni. Some of the material was dry (such as the parts that dealt purely with linguistics), though on the whole it was rather interesting. The course was brief, but discussed concepts such as the sapir-whorf hypothesis, Chomsky's contribution to the field, something about how language evolved around the use of fire, etc. Anyways, I miss the course :( and want to revisit the concepts, since I forgot a lot lol, and learn more about the field. Any interesting books about linguistic anthropology, especially focusing on the development and social role of language?

Anthropology/Linguistics PhD, and can you get a PhD concentrating in both primate research and cultural research? US

Hi! I'm an upcoming college freshman, and I want to double major in linguistics and anthropology, and I had a few questions! One is if one can get a PhD in both cultural and biological anthropology at the same time? I want to study primates, but I also generally want to apply any findings to larger societal structures, and study those independently as well. And on top of that, I want to teach English in other countries for some time as well, when in the process of getting my PhD would that be a good idea? I don't want to miss out on becoming a professor/researcher, but I also want to travel and experience other countries through teaching english there. Thank you so much for reading this, and your help!!

I got my undergraduate degree in Anthropology (I mostly focused on linguistics) almost 15 years ago and never used it. How would I go about getting into grad school?

After I got my degree I planned on continuing on to grad school, but life happened and I’ve spent my life hopping between jobs I can get not jobs I want. I’m moving back to where I went to school and would like to go back at least for a masters and possibly a PhD.

I have a masters in Human Resources, but it’s from a school where the application process required almost nothing.

The application process at the school I want to go to seems impossible with a 15 year gap.

The letters of recommendation especially are causing me a lot of stress. I need 3. One of my professors from back then hopefully remembers me. My current boss, in my most relevant job, is my dad. So I assume that’s not an option. I literally can’t think of anyone else.

Does anyone have experience returning to school after a long gap? I mostly need help with anxiety.
