Where can I get Lebanese wine in Canada?

I moved to a little town in the middle of nowhere and im seriously starting to miss the wine from back home. Im in Northern Alberta if it matters.

I cant seem to find a website that has the wine in stock and is able to ship it! SAQ & LCBO are the only ones that I could find.

##Armenia will create a new Volunteer Army to defend infrastructure and borders

The Defense Ministry submitted a proposal to create a Volunteer Army (Υ‘Υ·ΥΥ‘Φ€Υ°Υ‘Υ¦ΥΈΦ€) with headquarters in Yerevan.

Defense Ministry: // It will give a national character to the defense of Armenia. We'll organize a world-class military system on the principle of voluntarism aimed towards repelling any possible encroachments of an adversary. //

It aims to involve all citizens of Armenia in defense of their country by making them ready in the event of external military attacks.

The decision to create it was made after analyzing the enemy's possible actions, which could include terrorist attacks deep inside Armenian territory in addition to border infiltration. The plan is to be prepared to respond.

  1. It's a system that recruits volunteers in the event of war or imminent military action.

  2. It's meant to involve the "whole nation".

  3. To defend borders and infrastructure, and safely evacuate of civilians if needed.

  4. It'll be distributed across all provinces.

  5. It's led by Chief of General Staff of the army.

      1. During peace, the heads of divisions in each province will be the deputy leaders of each province. In Yerevan that would be the deputy mayor.
  6. They cannot hire those who are already in army reserves because in the event of war they would be drafted anyway. Each regional government will help to identify qualified "civilians" as potential recruits.

  7. Felons and emergency workers don't qualify.

  8. The recruits will be given a weapon and a uniform.

  9. They will undergo training, receive food, and those who have a job will be protected by law 175.1.4.

The below information was provided by Azeri dissidents, human rights activists and ex-ambassadors.

Until recently the Clans were in a Cold War. Now it's hot. Expect some action this Autumn.

who are the Clans?

Armenian Clan, aka Western Azeris who migrated from Armenia.

Nakhijevan Clan, aka Heydar Aliyev, aka Old Guard.

Kurdish Clan includes people from Artsakh and Armenia.

Pashayev Family, aka Baku Clan. First lady's family. This one isn't really a "clan" yet. It's a family trying to compete against the Clans.

Can you recommend a Lebanese wine?

Hello!

I am considering to buy my dad a bottle of wine from Lebanon for Christmas. Me buying wine for him has become a tradition a while back:)

But I am the opposite of a wine expert - I would appreciate it if you could help me! I would be glad to be recommended a wine of nice quality but not of a huge price. Preferably red.

Sadly where I live I probably won't be able to have a diversity in choice. I found these three pages that deliver Lebanese wine, I hope there are a few good ones among those.

https://www.emessa.cz/libanonske-vino

https://www.winehouse.cz/libanon/

https://www.vinicola.eu/vino-libanon

If you want to recommend me a wine that is not among those, I would welcome that also, if none of those are good I can try to hunt for the one you recommend :) but preferably those available.

Thank you so much!

You all have inspired me! I'm hitting a new LA restaurant every week this year to see what's good.

Like the title says, I'm making a point of hitting at least one new restaurant in LA every week this year.

Why? A couple reasons. The biggest one is that my food map of LA was formed when I moved here in 2011. A lot of my favorite restaurants are a mix of Jonathan Gold's recommendations, the absolute cheapest food you can find in LA, and places that were convenient to the routes I was traveling often back then.

What this means is that I have found myself going miles out of my way for a mediocre burrito because I know the restaurant will be open, I know they take credit card payment, and even if the burrito isn't great, I know it at least won't be bad.

It also means that I'm out of sorts when I'm looking for a nice place to meet up with friends or to take my wife on a date. Holes-in-the-wall are FANTASTIC and I love them, but sometimes it's nice to have a sit-down dinner in a place with some real atmosphere.

Finally, my favorite restaurant, Shandong Dumplings in Pasadena, did not survive Covid. So I'm on the hunt for a really good dumpling place with the right flavor profile.

That's a lot to say! Anyway, here's what we've hit so far:

Week 1: Lan Noodles (Chinese Noodles, San Gabriel Valley)

Ordered: Spicy beef noodles, chow mein with chicken, Chinese hamburger with lamb, smashed cucumber salad.

Price: ~$`70

Atmosphere: C. Typical noodle/dumpling joint atmosphere. Busy staff, not a lot of room, bright fluorescent lights.

Food: A-. The noodles are hand cut and the texture is marvelous. Chinese hamburger was a barrel of laughs. Would go back just to order 2-3 of those. Smashed cucumber salad was *perfect*. Overall flavor profiles left something to be desired, but it should be said that my baseline here is Shandong. So it's not that Lan was off the mark, but more that they're food wasn't "exactly how it tasted at Shandong."

Week 1 Bonus: Adana (Lebanese/Armenian, Burbank/Glendale Border)

Ordered: Tabbouleh, lentil soup, kebab platters.

Price: ~$35/person? IDK, it was a business lunch.

Atmosphere: B-. Clearly set up to be a big banquet hall. Not exactly cozy.

Food: A. This was the prettiest tabbouleh I've ever seen. It had pomegranate seeds and liberal amounts of sumac and just tasted fantastic. Lentil soup alone is worth the trip. Meat was maybe a little over salted, but perfectly cooked. Rice was heavenly.

Week 2: Formosa Cafe ("Taiwanese", WeHo)

Ordered: 2 cocktails, hot sake, xiao long bao, chow mein.

Price: ~$80

Chateau Musar fans... Lebanon documentary movie "Wine and War" is now finally available on Amazon Prime

The documentary Wine and War was first released in 2020 under a very limited film festival release. It was basically impossible to watch for the past 6-12 months.

A few hours ago, it was finally released. It is free to watch on Amazon Prime in the US and several other countries. Apple TV has it as well.

I'd been eager to watch it after learning about Musar on this subreddit. Based on the first 15 minutes, it is a well made history of the region, and opens with a charming interview with Serge.

What are some of your favorite restaurants in Yerevan?

I'm curious what Yerevan restaurants you guys like the most, doesn't matter if you're locals or just frequent visitors. It doesn't have to be fancy stuff, just anything that has food and/or atmosphere you enjoy. I've been living here since August and here are some of the places I've discovered so far.

  • Eat & Fit and The Green Bean. Hipstery and somewhat expensive places with cozy interior design and vegetarian-friendly menus. Seem to be popular with expats and tourists.
  • ArtBridge. Also hipstery but in a more boomery way. Seems like a place middle-aged intelligentsia folk would hang out at. The restaurant is combined with a bookstore that has some true gems in a variety of languages.
  • Zanazan. Low-key fancy Middle Eastern'ish food, extremely delicious hummus.
  • Abu Hagop Burgers, Al-Darwandy and Zatar Pizza. Fast food places run by Middle Eastern repatriates, rather cheap and great for a quick snack.
  • Mer Hatsy. Similar to the former three but a bit more classy (they have wine) and even more Middle Eastern because the owners are actual Lebanese Arabs, not Lebanese Armenians. Lots of interesting Levantine pastry like sfiha.
  • Barev Arev. It was opened not long ago by a friend of mine. It's a fine dining place with complex dishes fusing Armenian and European traditions and 60 or so brands of local wine. A bit too fancy for my personal taste but it's great nevertheless.

Bonus questions: what are some bars/pubs you guys like? I've been to places like Dargett and Beer Academy but haven't found anything similar to the tiny, dark, very informal local bars I loved going to back in my hometown.

Lebanon the victorious and Israel the defeated

Source memri.org/asasmedia.com by Nadim Koteich. 15.Nov.2021

Nadim Koteich

In order to reflect the issue accurately, there is no point in considering defeat and victory in any logical sense [of these terms], because the claim about Israel's defeat is Hizbullah's central claim, so much so that it has become [central to] its party and sectarian identity... Hizbullah does not let anyone question its 'victory,' and insists on it more than ever when it comes to Israel.

"So… let's not argue with Hizbullah about whether it defeated Israel or Israel defeated Hizbullah, along with [the rest of] us. [Instead,] let's ask it why it has slipped, along with us, from the pinnacle of victory into the pits of defeat, while Israel has climbed from the pits of defeat to the throne of many victories. How is it that, 15 years after [the 2006 war between Hizbullah and Israel], Israel has overcome its 'defeat' while we have squandered our 'victory'[?]

"In September [2021], the World Health Organization assessed that Lebanon, once the hospital for the entire Middle East, has lost 40% of its doctors and 30% of its nurses since 2019. Most of them left [the country] this year, according to the Lebanese Order of Nurses. In addition, [it has been reported that] the American University in Beirut – which, along with the [Saint Joseph] Jesuit University, played an important part in the founding of Lebanon – intends to open a campus in the UAE. Naturally, it is not doing so as part of expanding or decentralizing its activity… This is simply a case of 'migration,' in the full sense of the term. The report about the 'migration' of the American University [from Beirut] is accompanied by shameful reports about three Lebanese universities that sold tens of thousands of academic diplomas in the Iraqi 'market'!!
Similar or even more alarming data can be found regarding other [Lebanese] sectors, such as [our] industry…

"To become convinced of the bitter end that awaits him, the Lebanese citizen surely does not need [to hear] the statements made by Olivier De Schutter, the UN's Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, who told Reuters after a two-week investigation into Lebanon's poverty: 'I'

Suggest me a vegan dish that easy and Belgian (Flemish preferred)

TL;DR: I want to cook a fairly easy dish that is vegan and belgian, flemish if possible, for a date.

Hello, I am an international international student in Liège and I am inviting a girl over for a date. She is coming from Antwerp and I want to make her a tasty meal.

I am Lebanese and the Lebanese cuisine has some fairly nice vegan dishes. I will make her Tabouleh, hummus, fries, falafel and tarator.

Even though it's a bit overkill, she helped with a lot of things in belgium and she even invited me over when i needed somewhere to crash in Bruxelles, i think she will stay the next day for lunch and i wanted to cook her something Flemish, or Belgian but vegan. We will complement it with wine (also would be happy to receive a recommendation for a cheap but tasty wine).

Thanks a lot in advance!

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Reflection: Shabbat and a Wedding

A few weeks ago I took a trip for a wedding of two friends, and planned to spend Shabbat by a local shul. I'm writing about it because

A) I haven't taken a lot of trips in the last few years because of both that big weird flu going around the world and a small personal tragedy; and

  1. we could use some not-so-negative messages here.

I went a few days early to see family, and settled into the hotel Friday afternoon. About a week beforehand I had looked around for a good shul to visit; this being a pretty well-populated Jewish area I was expecting a variety of options but it turns out the hotel was not actually in the big Jewish area, just around a Chabad and a Reform temple. I've spent enough time with Chabad that if I have other options I'll go to them first (all about that diverse experience) and Reform just isn't my speed.

I called a few synagogues a few miles away, including a few Sephardic and Persion institutions because, aside from just wanting to meet new people, I haven't had the opportunity to spend much time in those communities and like to take the opportunity when it arises for me. My first experience in a Sephardic synagogue, in Jerusalem when I was 16, helped orient and define my view of Judaism as a global community and I've always held that memory close to me.

Unfortunately, no one called back. Not unexpected, but I also am not one to just show up to a synagogue unannounced, especially during these times of ________ (choose your tragedy).

I did finally get in touch with an Orthodox shul who welcomed me to join them, but also said, "if you're going to have to be driving, why don't you not drive so far to us and instead go to Rabbi X." This rabbi was about half the distance, which was convenient.

Spoke to him and he welcomed me for Shabbat services on Saturday morning, but then also for ma'ariv and Kabbalat Shabbat at his house. I got a feeling he might just be a wayward Chabad shaliach (again, love my time with Chabad but I was looking for some diversity) but wasn't going to decline out of unconfirmed judgement.

Everyone else in the havurah wasn't arriving until later that evening and the katan v'kallah were going to have dinner with their families, so I went all by my lonesome.

There were a bunch of dudes in the backyard (in coats and even scarves, despite to me the weather of southern California in December is like summer) and they welcomed me as their tenth for minyan - which only reminded me of the father of a rabbi of m

How do I ask my neighbour nicely to wear more clothes in his backyard?

This is a repost. I am not the OP. OP: u/ThrowRA-niceneighbor

I (47F) and my husband (50M) live in a quiet suburb. We have three children (18F/18M/12F) but only our youngest is relevant to this post.

Our neighbours are a younger couple (20s M/F). They moved in last year and we haven't really gotten the chance to know them because we've been locked down for a lot of the time but they've always been nice and friendly in the interactions we've had.

Anyway, they recently set up a home gym in their backyard. Their yard is a little higher up than ours so it's quite easy to look into it and one day when 20sM neighbour was working out (he usually plays music when he does) hubby and I happened to notice that he likes to lift weights in bright Speedos. (Green that time, rainbow zebra when I looked the second time, then I didn't again myself). No big deal, it's his house and he wasn't bothering anything other than my husband's ego.

(It's probably worth mentioning that both of them are very attractive. He's quite fit, dark and covered in tattoos, she's tall, pretty and curvy).

The problem is that my youngest's room looks over into their backyard as well and she has a little bit of a crush on our male neighbour. To the point where she's figured out when he goes to exercise (usually mid/late afternoon) and apparently has been watching him from her window for a while now. We caught her today and she says that he even smiled/waved at her once then moved away.

Obviously, we're going to sit with her and have a talk about boundaries and appropriate behaviour, but hubby thinks we should talk to our neighbour as well and ask him to at least wear more clothes when he does his thing. I told him I agreed but I didn't want to be rude, then we had a little argument that led to me agreeing to go ask them but I don't know how to go about this nicely. Any advice Reddit?

EDIT - We sat down with our daughter and had a talk, I won't go into details but she knows what she did was inappropriate and we've told her if she does it again she's going to have to move rooms (her room is the biggest in the house other than ours and she begged for it once her brother moved into the guest house).

Also, once our restrictions loosen in the next few weeks we're going to invite them over for a BBQ and drinks.

And holy fuck I appreciate all the good advice but some of you are creepy as hell.

How do I ask my neighbour nicely to wear more clothes in his backyard? UPDATE: Neighbours are lovely

Insights for enjoying Paris

Hi all, long time Parisian here, I thought it'd be a nice exercise to give my own insights in an evolving post to guide people new to the city, staying only for a few days or planning to live here for a while, and interested by "the other side of the postcard".

First and foremost, to get a general understanding of the city checkout the great wiki put up by some redditors https://www.reddit.com/r/paris/wiki/index. Also, the reddit search tool being not really efficient, to improve your search in the r/paris subreddit history, you can use third-party tools like https://redditsearch.io or https://redditcommentsearch.com

Second, a small disclaimer: this post doesn't aim at being a full guide on Paris but a selection of alternative or less touristic things to do. Post size being limited, choices have to be made : famous landmarks and museums are skipped, nice residential areas omitted. NB : websites in English are promoted when they exists.

My 4 year oldest favourit joke, which he very proudly memorized and told all his teachers.

Two muffins are in an oven, one muffin looks at the other and says "is it just me, or is it hot in here?"

Then the other muffin says "AHH, TALKING MUFFIN!!!"

4-year relationship (22M) with (22F) ended. Completely lost.

Disclaimer: this post was originally posted last night on the Relationships main page. It got removed for it "not being about relationships". anways enjoy my pain.

I would like to start off by saying hi. This is my first post here but have been reading these posts for probably about the past 3 months. I would like to thank everyone who has shared their stories as they have done profound things for both my mental and anxiety. Seeing that other people go through the same issues as yourself I think does a lot for someone like me who is going through it right now.

I don't really know where to start this but I guess from the beginning.

I met my girlfriend 2 months into our freshman year at college. We were introduced through mutual friends and at first, I had no interest in her as I was playing the whole "cool guy" that was just looking to sleep with as many girls as possible. Over the course of those two months, we would see each other at parties, she would always try to talk to me but I would simply blow her off. I was actually a pretty big dick looking back on it. It wasn't until the end of the two months when I came down with a pretty bad flu (vomiting, chills, fever, etc. those dorm rooms breed some serious disease) and she went out her way to go buy me groceries and soup and brought them to me to my dorm room. It was then I realized damn, I've never really had someone actually care about me this much, let alone be so persistent even when being shown little to no attention and the attention she was being shown was shit. So I bit the bullet and one night took her to go get some ice cream, told her she had something on her face in the car and for her to check it in the mirror. Out came a note I had written that simply said "want to be my girlfriend?" I know corny. The rest was history.

She became my best friend. I realized how great she really was and how wholesome and down-to-earth she was. She was Lebanese and came from a strict Catholic background. She was level-headed and knew what she wanted out of college and out of life. I think I liked that aspect so much for a lot of reasons. The first one was that she had godly morals so wasn't some thot that just fucked around with anyone. (I know hypocritical of me as that was exactly what I had intended to do in college. I was young and stupid.) Second, I was never really structured when I came to college so being around her I guess made me more driven. I had a 4.0 GPA my freshman year and was awarded

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies πŸ˜‚
