A list of puns related to "Latent Hostility"
Great read from Kareem on putting an end to the Lakers' 33 game win streak.
> Still, there was some personal history going into this game. I would be facing one of the greatest players of all time, Wilt Chamberlain. Ten years earlier, Wilt had scored 100 points in a single game, a record that still holds today. He had been a hero of mine when I was still in grade school and had even taken me under his wing, inviting me to play cards at his house, taking me and my date out to his night club. He had fancy cars, lots of fawning friends, and was always in the company of beautiful women. To a young Black kid like me, he embodied what success might look like for me one day. > > ----- > > But by 1972, I wasnβt the same Black kid. My idea of success no longer looked like Wiltβs idea. It wasnβt based on flash and conspicuous wealth. I established that during the negotiations my first year in the NBA draft. The Nets and the Bucks both wanted me so I told them to make a one-time offer. There would be no going back and forth because at the time I felt that bidding wars degraded people. The Bucks made the better offer of $1.4 million, which I accepted. Immediately after, the Nets came back with an offer of $3.2 million, which I declined because Iβd already given my word to the Bucks. I think the influence of my UCLA coach John Wooden, who always emphasized personal integrity over personal gain, had matured me away from my childhood fascination with Wiltβs glamorous lifestyle. > > The difference in my path and Wiltβs was further highlighted the previous year. After winning the NBA championship, the U.S. State Department sent Bucks head coach Larry Costello, Oscar Robertson, and me on a basketball tour of Africa. I had already been studying Islam for several years before the trip but decided to announce by conversion to Islam, as well as my new name, on June 3, 1971 at the State Department. My teammates on the Bucks embraced the change with full support. So did a majority of Milwaukee fans. > > When the January 9 game took place, I had been Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for only six months. I had established myself as a tenacious player with a bunch of NBA records, but I had also established myself as a civil rights activist, having participated in the Cleveland Summit and having boycotted the 1968 Summer Olympics. I was not Wilt. > > ----- > > Wilt recogni

Abstract: "The majority of studies on international conflict escalation use a variety of measures of hostility including the use of force, reciprocity, and the number of fatalities. The use of different measures, however, leads to different empirical results and creates difficulties when testing existing theories of interstate conflict. Furthermore, hostility measures currently used in the conflict literature are ill suited to the task of identifying consistent predictors of international conflict escalation. This article presents a new dyadic latent measure of interstate hostility, created using a Bayesian item-response theory model and conflict data from the Militarized Interstate Dispute (MID) and Phoenix political event datasets. This model (1) provides a more granular, conceptually precise, and validated measure of hostility, which incorporates the uncertainty inherent in the latent variable; and (2) solves the problem of temporal variation in event data using a varying-intercept structure and human-coded data as a benchmark against which biases in machine-coded data are corrected. In addition, this measurement model allows for the systematic evaluation of how existing measures relate to the construct of hostility. The presented model will therefore enhance the ability of researchers to understand factors affecting conflict dynamics, including escalation and de-escalation processes."

It's purely in their posture and facial expressions but I keep seeing some sort of anger lurking in there when we talk. I declined some "help" from my dad on my car and my uncle seemed to take it personally. It wasn't even about him. I'm trying to be independent and take care of my own responsibilities. Talking with another uncle I saw the same expression different times when I had an opinion. Is this fragile masculinity syndrome? Transphobia? Constipation? I don't have the energy to baby their feelings about my transition. Get over it.
Maybe it's my personality? I know men have social hierarchies. Could be my bluntness comes off as threatening/posturing?
Does anyone have a clue about how to learn to navigate male relationships?
CW: Lots of anger about racism.
In the V4 Commentary, Miles gives disgusting level of empathy to the rich, racist, and ignorant Atlesian elites who blamed Vale for its own destruction and gives nothing to the White Fang or the Faunus.
You know, the ones suffering from actual segregation, discrimination, and in some parts, slavery? In a world where things were so bad, being terrorists/starting a war was the only way to get rights? A world where things were so bad, peaceful convoys would get attacked in the middle of nowhere? The minority group where some of the main voices had their eye branded out and another orphaned by their parents being killed in a mine as slave labourers? In a world where advocates like Robyn can say "the people of Atlas and the Faunus" without any hint of how degrading that is?
What Miles said was (in reference to the ignorant Atlesians):
>It's not that they're necessarily evil or vicious. They're just... uninformed and are so comfortable with their life that they don't really worry about stuff outside of their life.
Sure, Miles. Great way to justify being ignorant and using slave labour/not caring about the plight of the oppressed.
In the same fucking commentary, he also said:
>They're based on foxes. You just know they're bad but you can't quite prove it. I mean, I know you have a knife behind your back, dog.
What even... He's talking about the Albain brothers by the way. Who, at this point, have done nothing but come to the Belladonna household to tell Ghira that they condemn Adam's actions. This is profiling. It does not help that real life minorities are compared to animals to degrade them.
He goes on to say:
>Up to this point, a lot of our White Fang members have been very clearly on one side of the spectrum. (In reference to Ilia) Oh no, she stabs the Hell out of Sun.
Not a single member of the White Fang is portrayed as sympathetic and the writers know that. They are only ever good when they go with the Belladonna concept of protest: doing fucking nothing. Not even peaceful marches or boycotts, literally nothing.
Hmm... wasn't there something a certain famous protester said about people like this?
Miles claimed he wrote most of Blake's arc in V4-5. Seeing how shit it was, I am not surprised, but I need to explain just how awful it is in general. Bear with me (pun... intended?)

'I love you Dad,' Ceralla reminded him.
'I know you do, but please focus on what you're doing. Being careless and flying will only end badly,' James replied.
'It doesn't need much thought when I'm far above the trees,' she replied as she searched the forest floor below her, one ye awkwardly looking though the bond checking ring floating in front of her eye.
'Still, please just be careful.'
'I will,' she grumbled.
'Thank you, and I love you too,' he replied before returning his attention to his task at the Well today.
Ceralla had chosen to go hunting the day after James had revealed the new connection to Lafalla, Vency, and Master Cellone, and it had been Lafalla's idea that if they got far enough away from one another, the link might break, though that idea came after Lafalla had calmed down enough to think straight. An hour of Ceralla flying away from the town that morning had proven that not to be the case, or at least it wouldn't break without her going far beyond the boundaries of the forest which he definitely did not want her doing. Ceralla was wearing Lafalla's ring in case the connection did break and they needed to get back in touch, but that was seeming very unlikely. All he could really do was occasionally check in on her as he began his full discussion with Zarala about the experiments and what would be happening in the near future.
"Good morning James, thank you for volunteering for this," Zarala said as James knocked on the door frame to Zarala's room. "Please come in and get comfortable."
"Thank you," James replied as he sat on the pile of cushions Zarala kept in the far corner. "How have you been? It's been a little while since we spoke, a little bit before we all had to stay at home due to the cold."
"It was indeed. Did you end up going to a shelter? My family wasn't lucky enough to keep their heat going so we had to," Zarala began, attempting to start

As for Tom, we saw a side of him that we've never seen before. Or at least an amplitude we've never seen before. The guy was completely unhinged, wracked with existential dread, more conscious of and actively resistant to the emasculation he suffered from his marriage, and possibly suicidal. That scene with Greg creeped me the fuck out because I felt Tom was so bubbling with rage at that point that he was gonna snap and do something violent. And he almost did, too. The sexual overtones made everything even more twisted. And yet I still felt bad for him in all the scenes with Shiv, when his fear and helplessness were laid bare. On paper that's not supposed to work, but in Matthew Macfadyen's hands it soars.
Basically, I felt the Tom stuff brought a lot of the latent psychological darkness behind the character to the surface in a way that felt fresh and unpredictable, which made him the most captivating part of the episode. Logan and Kendall's mutual hostility left less to the imagination because we knew exactly what each character felt about the other. Their pensive silence and restraint felt almost like a gimmick in that regard because we knew the politeness and quietness was gonna erode, the question was just when and how much. Logan's collapse added a ton of brilliant tension and upended the dynamic of the scene, but the Tom stuff I feel did more with less, and was slightly more revelatory.
A rather low key criticism of the CAA is that it does not include atheists despite atheists being persecuted in Pakistan.
On the face of it, the criticism plays on some existing latent form of Islamophobia which runs in the minds of liberals wherein it is assumed that Muslim Majority Country = Apostasy Illegal.
Now, let us analyze this question in detail. How true is the claim of atheists being persecuted in Pakistan ?
I have seesee that some Atheists tend to hold a false belief that Apostasy is punishable in Pakistan. This seems to be more of fiction than fact. There is no law which criminalises Apostasy in Pakistan. There is a Blasphemy law in Pakistan which deals with criminal offenders who slander religion, just as there is one in India which deals with criminals who slander religion. The only point where the Indian law differs from the Pakistani one is on the quantum of the severity of the punishment.
To add on the top of this, there have been 0 recorded cases of openly identifying atheists being lynched in Pakistan. If anything, India is more dangerous than Pakistan (many Atheists have been killed in India, for being atheists and for holding political views). In contrast, in Pakistan, never has a self identified atheist EVER been killed for anything.
The perception of Pakistan being a state which is hostile towards Atheists is based more on fiction than on reality. It feels more like a desperate attempt of Hindutva forces to milk a non existent issue. .
In essence, There is no recorded case of an openly identifying atheist being harassed in Pakistan, let alone be killed. Tha whole perception of Pakistan being difficult for atheists to live in is just mass Islamophobia in action.
Intro: Not much goes on in young Albrecht's life. Well, besides chores, restocking on petricite for the lamp-posts around their home, his life had been uneventful living on the edge of the Rocky Highlands of Demacia, just outside of Fossbarrow where mining Silver was the norm. All the excitement he got was from his frequent naps and daydreams, simply being called lazy by his family when in truth, the boy was a Narcoleptic. All is peaceful in his household until, a latent magic within him awakened, an ancient talent to merge the world of dreams and reality and caused him to release both the most wondrous of dreams and most torturous of nightmares into the waking world.
Info: Albrecht is an Enchanter and Catcher who can easily sustain himself and his team with sweet dreams and make the game a nightmare for enemies. But he must be careful, for though sleep may provide you with rest, it provides the enemy an opportunity to strike.

Waking up from the most recent of many naps that day, Albrecht stretched only to find that his neck was incredibly sore. Looking around, he realized he was leaning against the tree in his family's backyard, rake laying forgotten next to him and leaves still scattered about, a messy pile formed nearby.
"Asleep again Brecht?" he heard the chiding of his sister from the window where she had set a freshly baked pie out to cool. "Mother will have your head when she sees the yard still covered in leaves." she warns and all he can muster in return is to make a face in indignation. Shaking her head at him, she retreats back into the house, probably to set the table.
Getting up, Albrecht looked to the sky to confirm his assumption that it was just a bit past noon. With the only chore assigned to him that day uncompleted and his mother sure to mouth off on him for his laziness even if he would finish before dinner, he set the rake back by the fence and made to drowsily make his wa

I (F 28 trans) am just so tired. I figured out I was trans over the summer, and proposed to my fiancΓ©e (F 27 cis) not too long after. We've been together 9 years, and she's an absolute angel and loves me no matter what, so of course she accepts my proposal. We tell everyone about the engagement immediately, and we gradually came out to close friends and siblings as we start to feel comfortable with it. Everyone reacts beautifully, which isn't a surprise since we live in Big Blue Northern City.
But notably we're not out to our parents yet. Her parents are very much white suburban neoliberals - her mom Has A Gay Black Friendβ’ so she's apparently an expert on racial and queer issues, and she also thinks AOC is too high strung and would chill out if she just had a boyfriend (something she actually said). It's not republican, but it's still far from ideal. We decide to approach this delicately and wait a bit to tell them.
FiancΓ©e's parents are super excited about the wedding and jump right into planning - in particular, my fiancΓ©e's mother absolutely loves weddings, so she goes full steam ahead. She's a little disappointed that we aren't having it in Down Home Southern City, but she likes Big Blue Northern City so it's not a huge deal. We have a venue, date, and band booked within about 3 weeks. She is PUMPED, she has been waiting for her whole life for the moment her daughter gets married.
We come out to them about 2 months in. Their initial reaction is actually pretty accepting, they're already using my name and pronouns in the first conversation. This is going to be smooth sailing, right?
Except they completely check out of wedding planning entirely, and suggest we postpone because "y'all are still figuring this out, a lot is changing right now and you don't know how you'll feel about your relationship in 8 months with all these changes" despite the fact that we've known I'm trans for several months already, and that I'd been questioning for even longer. Despite us saying over and over that yes we still love each other, yes we still want to get married, yes fiancΓ©e is attracted to women too, no my sexuality isn't going to suddenly flip and I'll be attracted to men for some reason (a 'concern' that actually came up, thanks comphet). They're sad because "they don't want to have to choose between her and her Trump loving grandpa in Midwest Nowhere Town". It's not overt hostility at this point, it's

The silence that was broken by fiery explosions rocked Altira's world, she couldn't help but feel like everything in the world was just wrong at that very moment. At first she was standing a few units (1.5 meters) away from the rest of his squad, and the next their objective exploding into a giant ball of flame, taking two and injuring her sibling with it. At first, she seemed to fear for her life, after all she was on a deathworld of all things and already several of the local fauna eyed her as a potential appetizer and she swore she saw some of the flora ate some larger organisms! Even if they ate anything that was barely half her size, the thought that such things could exist was traumatizing to say the least.
Yet no matter how she felt, her instincts overridden mind screamed at her to get the away from there at all costs. There was a deathworld predator and it was sapient! She kept putting as much distance between her and it as much as she she could. There was no way she was heading back in that direction any time soon. Eventually, her body grew fatigued and she had to stop. Looking back behind her, she didn't see the predator anywhere... There was no way a deathworld predator could not keep up with her, but her vision did not betray her, it never had, there truly was nothing there.
Taking a moment to regain her composure, she pulled out the holovid and attempted to contact HQ, and to her surprise she still had some signal, It wasn't the best, but at least it could allow for frame by frame calls instead of full motion calls.

ABSTRACT
This article examines the puzzling phenomenon that many Chinese liberal intellectuals fervently idolize Donald Trump and embrace the alt-right ideologies he epitomizes. Rejecting βpure tacticβ and βneoliberal affinityβ explanations, it argues that the Trumpian metamorphosis of Chinese liberal intellectuals is precipitated by their βbeacon complexβ, which has βpoliticalβ and βcivilizationalβ components. Political beaconism grows from the traumatizing lived experience of Maoist totalitarianism, sanitizes the West and particularly the United States as politically near-perfect, and gives rise to both a neoliberal affinity and a latent hostility toward baizuo. Civilizational beaconism, sharing with its nationalistic counterpartβcivilizational vindicativismβthe heritages of scientific racism and social Darwinism imported in late-Qing, renders the Chinese liberal intelligentsia receptive to anti-immigrant and Islamophobic paranoia, exacerbates its anti-baizuo sentiments, and catalyzes its Trumpian convergence with Chinese non-liberals.

I have some comments to make on this article. It seems to me not only do some Chinese "liberal" thinkers suffer from this complicated yet acute condition, some "muricans" that frequently visit anti CCP and this sub do too. They idolize their model of government despite of by electing a leader named Trump, all the world has seen the fact how the "white trash" class are so disdained and so left behind by their own political leadership class. In the mean time, as survey done by Harvard pointed out, ordinary Chinese citizens have a high level of satisfaction of CCP. https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2020/07/long-term-survey-reveals-chinese-government-satisfaction/
Political liberalism in China is a complicated issue, if Muricans just want to poke fun, then do realize that CCP supporters simply are not triggered and they do not care; and your poking fun only makes you look pathetic. Please do have some self conscience and realize the political situation you are in then you might have some second thoughts on poking fun at others.

This essay was originally written for the Libri Draconis blog.
Like many patrons of this blog, I possess an unabashed gluttony for books. I'm a voracious reader, but a voracious reader that is keenly aware of her preferences. I would characterize myself primarily as a genre reader. Yes, I appreciate and regularly read the Classics. And yes, I read the occasional piece of literary fiction or non-fiction recommended by a friend or family member. But the vast majority of the content I read falls squarely into one of two genres: Fantasy or Romance.
And also, like many patrons of this blog, I am continually in pursuit of those perfect books, books that speak to my soul, books that seem to have been written just for me, because they deliver on all the elements of literature that matter to me specifically. These perfect books cater to my literary preferences, they resonate with my life experiences, and they scratch the itch of how I like to be entertained.
Lately, I've been reflecting on what the search for those perfect books looks like for me as a reader and why, especially with respect to an author that I have found consistently delivers content that is thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying for me personally: Grace Draven. This essay attempts to unpack my thoughts on Fantasy-Romance and explain my appreciation for Grace Draven's works as first-class examples of both genres.
The title of this post makes a bold claim - "The Best Epic Fantasy Author You're Not Reading" - and I admit to being provocative in the title. While Grace Draven is often included in Romance recommendation threads, you don't often, if ever, see her name in recommendations outside of that context, or more specifically in requests for Epic Fantasy. My hope is that by reading this, Romance-wary, Epic Fantasy fans might decide to pick up one of her books and discover what an amazing fantasy author she is, and that her name will start to materialize in Epic Fantasy discussions and not "just" Romance. And for Romance readers out there that are unfamiliar with her work, here's hoping you decide to dive in to one of her fantastical worlds.
My search for the next perfect book often begins perusing selections from the branch of speculative fiction that I prefer above all others - Epic, or Heroic, Fantasy. When I think about what appeals to me within the Epic Fantasy

The number one thing that defines all of us here, like it or not, is our connection to China.
Where I work there is a lot of latent hostility towards China and I think it's important to put it all into context ie why the elite in our (America) society feel the need to villainize China. That filters down through Fox News and other media to the common people, most infamously in the attacks on Asians that occurs.
When I first looked into the issue of China's challenge to American hegemony, I found it very distressing and I myself became very anti-China. As I've become more educated on the subject, my anxiety has decreased greatly and my main ire is towards elite narratives on both sides which have the potential to cause unnecessary conflict. And of course, be aware that any conflict with China would make America a Zombie Apocalypse for all of us.
Hi, screenwriters.
I'm looking for feedback on my feature. It's a 92-page drama based on real-life characters that gives a look into what led to the fall of Zimbabwean dictator; Robert Mugabe. Oh, and it's all in one setting.
To those not aware of the political situation in Zimbabwe; it's basically a dictatorship and has been from the days of Mugabe. This means there is heavy censorship of most work- artistic or otherwise. With this in mind, I opted to tell the story in one setting, which means in a reality where this gets to be made, the film can be shot anywhere- Iceland, Malaysia, Luxembourg- doesn't matter. It's in one room. I don't think a film like this could ever be made in Zimbabwe- at least not in my lifetime. I thought of sharing this as I felt some may wonder why I chose to handle the material this way.
I'm open to all forms of feedback but I'd really want to learn more on the following:
