And before you say their YT clip channels are pretty strong, that can't be enough to keep the lights on for these shows.
My guess is that none of these shows actually make money, and their value is mostly derived from media companies being able to internationally depict what "American culture" is.
SNL is probably the same thing.
Even though late-night TV doesn't mean anything to any American, this idea that these shows are the places where our culture is discussed/defined hasn't gone away. But times are different then when Carson was on.
Also, shows like Noah's & Colbert's that are deliberate attempts of recapturing John Stewart's political satire talk show from the early 2000's don't work and I think it's because when John Stewart did it, it was sort of like he was a populist figure going up against the Neo-Lib establishment but now it's like Noah and Colbert are the establishment, so satire on their opponents often fails to be funny.
"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" bandleader Jon Batiste received 11 Grammy nominations yesterday. Personally, I'm not familiar with his musical catalogue, I just know him from the Late Show. I'm very familiar with the house band at the "Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon", The Roots.
Other than a steady paycheck and regular exposure, what's the benefit of working the late night talk show gig?
How much time do the band musicians work every day and each week? How much are they limited to make new music? How much are they limited to tour?
Could Jon Batiste make his exit from the Late Show to support his music like Branford Marsalis back when he left Jay Leno's "Tonight Show?"
