Eighty years ago, there was an event, a happening, that we have forgotten today, when we value freedom not, and view life as be-all-and-end-all.
When the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia, our army was - unfortunately - pathetic. It surrendered swiftly, and the beast opened its jaw for what it took to be easy prey.
Fortunately, Yugoslav Partisans (and occasionally Chetniks, but never Nazi-loving Ustashe) were a difficult meal. We fought back, ambushing Nazis, blowing up bridges, destroying trucks.
The Nazis were furious.
In October 1941, they declared that 100 civilians would be shot for every occupying soldier killed.
Now, a lesser race would have cowered at this. They would have ceased resisting, preferring to live as cowed slaves, tilling the fields, milking the cows.
But we Slavs are made of better stuff. It is we who turned Alexander East, not West.
In an attack in Gornji Milanovac, ten Nazis were executed, and other 26 wounded.
The Nazis assembled 2,300 civilians - maybe more - including children - and massacred them with rifle and machine gun.
Now, you might think that as a result, the Yugoslavs would cease their endless struggle for resistance. And some of them, including the Chetniks, did, valuing freedom not at all.
But the Communist Partisans under Tito merely redoubled their efforts. Every mountain trail was death to Nazis; every bridge death; every wall in every town or village might conceal a Partisan sharpshooter. The Nazis had seized a tiger by the tail and as a result had to commit so many divisions to pacifying Yugoslavia that it weakened their forces on Eastern and Western Front
As a result of this defiance - of valuing freedom over life - the world was freed from Nazi tyranny.
Today, we do not speak German. Jews are safe. We do not shoot homosexuals.
And part of it - a small part, it is true - is because eighty years ago, in a field, an elderly Yugoslav schoolteacher, with his students, stood and faced the machine guns, and told them to fire anyway - because he was doing what he loved, teaching his class.
Long live the memory of Kragujevac. Long live freedom.
Šta mislite? I da li je se sećate?
>The deepest impression that a foreigner can walk away with from one country is the pain that he can feel in that country. That is what I experienced in Kragujevac. Nazi brutality vented its anger in full force on this docile city, turning it into an enormous grave with seven thousand murdered people. It is a difficult memory that I carry. But also a beautiful memory. When someone mentions Yugoslavia, I always remember Kragujevac and its students who were massacred by the enemy. It is then that I am reminded of the heroism of their people.
Despite how beautifully it is written, there is no other source that I can find (within English/German/French media at least) that can verify where it is from. All I found was that this was quoted from a brochure available at the Monument Park Museum in Kragujevac called Kragujevachki oktobar 1941 by Stanisha Brkich (Brkić).
Thanks in advance for any help! Even if it is made up, it's nonetheless very well composed.
Pozdrav!
