I know I’m just preaching to the choir here, but I just need to vent where I can be seen! I’ve been a manager for a while now, and I absolutely love it and my team. Sometimes there are just some situation with customers that send me over the edge and irritate me for a while. There were a couple situations today that just had me thinking “We’re gonna act like this on New Year’s Day, huh?”
First situation was with an even exchange. Our store’s policy is form for form (shower gel for shower gel, lotion for lotion, etc.) and my store manager is very strict about following policy. Well when I was called to the registers for help I’m greeted by a couple who wanted to exchange some men’s lotion for shower gel. I told her unfortunately our exchange policy only allows form for form, and that I can’t allow the exchange. They immediately started getting aggressive and saying how it’s the same prices, the lotions were never used, and what are they supposed to do with 4 lotions and no shower gels (like that’s my fault). I asked if they had a receipt, so that we could maybe do a return onto merchandise credit so they wouldn’t have to pay anything. Then the wife says to me “If I had the receipt don’t you think I would’ve brought it?” So, at that point I just told them there was nothing I could do. Then they went on a whole tangent about how they shop there all the time, spend hundreds of dollars, and that they should honor the exchange for them or else they’ll never shop here again. Like, okay strangers I’ve never met before, let me break the rules and potentially get fired so that you can get your shower gels. I have sympathy for people, and I understand it’s a silly policy. But there’s really nothing I can do, and I’m definitely not going to break the policy for you. They asked for corporate’s number and my name and left yelling.
Next situation was towards the end of the night, when we’re all getting ready to close. One of my associates asks me for help with a man about our men’s SAS products. He asked me if this is all we have for the sale (It’s just a small tower with body creams, lotions, and canyon shower gel). I told him that it was all we had, and I apologized for the small selection. He asked if there was anything he could do to make a set. I told him we had Marble lotion 50% off and we have it in shower gel for full price, and that’s really the only “sale” set we could have. He says no and says “Why would I want to pay full price?!” At this point I’m just

How do you keyholders feel about being the free on-call night security for DG? For those who don't know if something trips the alarm at night like a loose balloon then the keyholder who set the alarm that night will be the first one called by the security company. That means getting your ass out of bed and going to the store to meet the cops. If not, it'll go up the chain of command and if it hits the DM you're in hot water.
In my opinion it's unpaid labor. You're going to force me to waste my time, gas and energy to go to the store and not get compensated? What if I crash on the way there? After all for some it is a long drive to their store. Which begs the question about the worthless security company in the first place. Is DG contracting a company just to sit on their asses and watch a computer screen for any blinking lights?
I know SW gives you a raise + extra minutes to your closing, however it got me thinking if it is also something you can deduct at the end of the year? Or can you not cause SW covers that with the extra minutes + keyholder raise? Cause I close every day and our bank is actually like 7 miles away from the store...
I just have a question for you. Are you able to have set availability? At the store work I previously had a manager who just transferred out but they was unavailable to work Saturdays. I worked with her for over six months and they never worked a Saturday, I recently got promoted and was told that since now I am in leadership I am not able to have days off and I have to have an open availability, but it totally contradicts itself because this saif manager had Saturdays off now when I try to bring it up they make it a big deal and make me feel bad about wanting a day off which is not even during the weekend. Is this policy or should I bring this up to someone else just a curious mind wanting to know.
I am so proud of myself mom! I worked on working my best at work (retail) & finally got promoted as assistant manager and keyholder for the sales associate department floor! I love my job and everyone at work is so much fun. My real mom doesn't care and is never happy for me :(

I might be asking for the impossible. I want to submit to my wife and I want her to punish me when I am not. Do all stores have the keyholders come in during their break to help say if there is an issue? I don't work at a dollar general but know someone that does and even when the assistant manager is there who refuses to do anything but stock shelves the keyholders can't leave during break in case there is an issue. Is that all stores?
So I work in retail, and both our assistant store manager and keyholder have left in the span of three months and so the manager is looking for a person to fill the shoes of the keyholder position.
Everyone including me has said no, having to take the responsibility of opening and closing the store and deactivating alarm systems triggered out of work hours for no extra pay but a glorified job title is shitty.
Now me and another guy have just been given the job to fill as we're "more experienced". I thought to ask here on whether I can just reject this shit and still have my job after or do they have the right to sack me if I don't take it up.
So, as many of you have probably experienced, hours are being cut left and right. I got promoted to key last May, and today one of two (yes, two) ASMs at our store was transferred. The other ASM stepped down from the SM position around the same time I got promoted, and due to some internal animosity I don't think she'll be working there too much longer. This leaves me and one other keyholder to get promoted. Thing is, I don't know shit about being an ASM. What additional responsibilities are there? I receive trucks, close almost nightly, make sure whoever I'm working with is doing their part, stuff like that. What else is there to it?
