When Muslim rulers came in and instituted the jizya on non-Muslims, how burdensome was the tax? Also did it vary in burden by region? If it did very did it have an effect on the propensity of people to convert to Islam (the higher the tax the larger the share of the population that converted). Do we have evidence of people who would convert to get out of paying the tax but continued to practice Christianity or whatever their previous religion was? I read that Christianity collapsed in North Africa, at least the part west of Egypt, quite quickly after the Islamic invasion but that Christianity continued to be the majority religion in the eastern Mediterranean for some time. Is that true and if it is would differences in the jizya have played a role or if not what would have?
Some Muslims justify the existence of the "jizyah" as being given in return for your protection! Nice defense, but who told you to invade my land? I mean, you invade my country and abuse women and money and enslave whomever you want, then you say that "we protect you in return for money"? Who asked you to protect us or enter our land in the first place!

Many Islamic scholars have stated that a dhimmi should stand at a lower level than a Muslim when he pays the jizya (meaning the Muslim is sitting in a high chair and receives the Jizya).
Where is the dignity in Umar's Assurance, and this is a part of it, as it came to Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyya:

... keep reading on reddit β‘I read In God's Path: The Arab Conquests and the Creation of an Islamic Empire by Robert Hoyland a few years ago and he ends with the Abbasid Revolution. One of the letters he quoted is an Umayyad governor complaining about people converting leaving him without money to pay his garrison (I think, at least, my memory is a bit foggy on exactly what it was). But the argument Hoyland was making was that the Umayyads needed to continue taxing converts because their expenditures were calibrated to tax revenues prior to the population converting.
So that makes me wonder how the Abbasids afforded to run their empire if they abolished taxes on converts without having instituted anything new, so I presume they did have some newer forms of taxation, but I don't know so I'm asking here!
In an Islamic State, Christians and Jews have 3 options: convert to Islam, pay the jizya tax, or be killed. All other religions have to either convert to Islam or be killed according to the Shafii, Maliki and Hanbali Madhabs. Only the Hanafi Madhab gives other religions like Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs the option of paying jizya.
The purpose of the jizya tax is to humiliate non-Muslims:
(Sahih Bukhari Volume 4 Chapter 88) Narrated Ibn Umar that the Prophet said, "My livelihood is under the shade of my spear, and he who disobeys my orders will be humiliated by paying Jizya."
(Tabari Volume 12) Umar ibn Al-Khattab said "Summon the people to God; those who respond to your call, accept it from them, but those who refuse must pay the poll tax out of humiliation and lowliness. (Ibn Ishaq Pages 956 and 962) Muhammad said "He who withholds the Jizya is an enemy of Allah and His apostle."
(Sahih Muslim 4294) It has been reported from Sulaiman b. Buraida through his father that the Messenger of Allah (ο·Ί ) said "If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them."
