Ok so that’s a mouthful of a title, so let me try and break it down. Piece of media exists, has a moment in it that is met with negativity, sequel or new piece of media tries to address that problem and instead makes something far worse then the original problem. Hopefully that clears it up. Anyhow, my example is one that might actually get me killed here, but fuck it I’m feeling ballsy: IDW’s treatment of Arcee in the Transformers comics.
So, for those not aware allow me to explain as best I can. Arcee was introduced into the IDW continuity in her own Spotlight issue, like many other characters throughout the continuity’s run. This spotlight was written by long time Transformers scribe Simon Furman, who introduced tons of ideas and concepts into Transformers that are core today (Primus, Unicron as a evil divine being, the fallen, the 13 primes, to name a few). One more…let’s say controversial idea of his concerns how Transformers handle gender.
Furman has traditionally not been a fan of female transformers or the idea of gendering transformers at all, stating on several occasions that he doesn’t understand why robots would have women. So, when he was tasked with introducing Arcee into IDW, he attempted to quote “apply a rationale to the whole issue” by saying the scientist Jhiaxus being the one to introduce gender to the race, by having Arcee, a genderless cybertronian, be forcibly changed into a female gendered form, traumatizing her.
Needless to say this was met with a fair bit of controversy, noted by some to be quite offensive to women and particularly transgender women. Now, I agree the whole thing is really bloody stupid, but I believe you could have easily wiped the story from continuity with a retcon or something and negated the issue. Instead, IDW bent over backwards to “fix” Arcee.
It was later revealed that Arcee is Galvatron’s sibling (for the record, in IDW Galvatron is an ancient cybertronian separate from Megatron), the strongest warrior of the autobots, a wrecker, Prowl’s personal hitman, Prime’s number two on Earth and is a bloodthirsty warrior more interested in cleaving cons in half then anything else. I get it, IDW wanted to take the story they got from Furman and turn it into a string badass female warrior, but…that’s not Arcee’s character.
