I know that having fake nails for a long time can cause overgrown hyponychium, but what the internet canโt seem to answer for me is WHY or HOW this happens. How does wearing dip nails for extended periods of time cause this little piece of skin to overgrow??
Iโve been picking at the skin on my fingers and toes as long as I can remember, but this is new for me. I cut my nail too short a few weeks ago. It happens, just painful and annoying.
But being a skin picker, I found the hyponychium(which is apparently the skin under the nail), can be peeled too. Itโs very painful, but I canโt stop. I keep putting band aids on, it heals a bit, then I take it off and start again. It really hurts, but I canโt seem to stop myself.
Anyone ever do this and have any advice?
For reference, I have been growing out my nails for about four or five years now. Every now and then my hyponychium will rip right on the edge between the nail and my finger tip. It never bleeds out, it is always completely clean, and for the most part there is not much pain unless I pull the skin back or press my finger tip in a weird way. When I look closely at it and pull it back a little bit, there is a little bit of red skin underneath there. It does not bleed out, but when I put my nail in there it hurts.I am honestly not bothered by it, because whenever it happens it usually heals within a day or two, but I was just wondering if this happens to other people with long nails. If so, is there a specific reason/phenomenon? Iโm just curious.
So I really like just using my fingers so far, I like that more full bodied "round" sound but the problem I've run into is my nails. Obviously the solution for most people would be to just cut them as short as possible but I can't do that without pain or discomfort and just looking online, there's really no way to actually get rid of it since its just how my nails are and it doesn't bother me otherwise. I was thinking about just getting them as short as I can get them and then just trying to create a smooth rounded fingertip with medical tape or a bandage but besides that I don't really know what else to do.
Am I just destined to not be able to play bass with my fingers and instead having to use a pick?
When my nails are short, the skin under my nails grows toward the tips of my fingers like I want to happen. However, any time my nails grow out, I can feel and see the skin under my nails is pushed back.
I donโt know if has anything to do with my hands always being in sanitizer and water at work. I just want to have long nails again.
Hello, to start off, I am not knowledgeable about nail care or nails in general. I had a gel manicure a few weeks ago and I let my nail grow really long for the first time as I was not able to have my gel manicure removed. However, the length of my nails became an inconvenience so I decided to cut them. I discovered that I had some sort of translucent skin that I didnโt have before, and it hurts whenever I cut near it. Iโm used to have really short nails so Iโd much rather have it removed.
Any advice will do! I tried to Google it but most of the suggested treatments about it are conflicting. Thank you so much!

Hey laq(c)ueristas! I have always wanted long nails but I almost always have stubs =(. My nails are very thin(transparent like glass) and flexible. One problem I have is that my hyponychium is further back than most peoples because I overly cleaned them when I was younger. I was wondering if anyone knows how or has successfully grown theirs longer to provide more nail strength. I was also thinking of getting a gel polish system like shellac to use to strengthen my nails. I wonder if it healthy to wear all the time as I can't imagine it allows the nail to breath, as well as the fact it contains chemicals. I would get silk wraps but they also use glue and might cost more over time(plus I'm unsure where to find an esthetician to do it). I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
