A list of puns related to "Haitian Vodou"
I was reading up on it and read that Louisiana Voodoo is a mixture of Vodou, conjure and rootwork? Can someone please clarify.
I'm guessing that the basics between Haitian Vodou and DR/PR Vudu are similar (Loa, Saint iconography, many practicing Catholicism alongside, etc.), but are there any major differences between them?
I would assume some of the cultural stuff is different.
It was night and I was outside. There was a bonfire lighting the scene but i couldnβt really see it, I could also see the full moon in the sky. I was sitting at a huge wooden table with around 6 women on my right including my friend who was sitting on the table and 2 older men on my left but smaller in size and looking away. In front of us was what I now learned is called a mambo. The only time i encountered this figure was in a LXXXI tarot reading two years ago. (See link below). She looked at us and said βbeginβ the women on my right started stomping at the table as if creating a rythme. My friends hand almost transformed into a snake and she started speaking with a snake tongue. It was super weird. The mambo then looked at me and i told me it was my turn. At this point both my hands uncontrollably slammed at the table. And i felt something in my guts and throat. I couldnβt speak at first but then the voice of a really old man came out of me and said βitβs been hard... i am tiredβ. The mambo smiled, i was reassured. I woke up and though it felt like a good dream i rly freaked out because feeling that i was possessed by a voice was super intense...... i am asking this community because i was told that the heart symbol on this card is inspired from vodou... ANY THOUGHTS? like srsly wtf?wise teacher card
So, I understand that like any other country/culture, these things are generally not taken seriously (for example, the overwhelming majority of Japanese people know nothing about Shinto), but I find Vodou interesting and cool.
Are most Haitian people aware of Baron Samdi? Or is it more along the lines of Japanese Shinto, where the gods/goddesses aren't commonly known? (I understand there is a distinction between gods and loas).
How do Haitians generally pronounce it? I've seen Baron Samdi and Baron Sa-med-ee.
Is it common to dress like Baron Samdi for cultural events (like Day of the Dead)? I'm from America, where cultural appropriation is an insanely big deal right now, so I'm curious if it's applicable in Haiti. Meaning, Baron Samdi is generally a very attractive black man with a skeletal face. Is it considered disrespectful for white people to dress as Baron Samdi? (Sorry if this unnecessarily brings death into the sub, but I feel it's a worthwhile question. No one wants to disrespect an entire culture.)
I've read that Baron Samdi in some ways resembles the way dead relatives are dressed during funerals (assumedly in their caskets). Does this just apply to the nostril plugs, or the top-hat/cane?
Hope these questions aren't disrespectful! Just really interested in the cultural beliefs. :)
Klk, dominicanos of Reddit!
I'm a Dominican-American with a weird question. RD is mostly Catholic, right? I understand that a minority of the population practices Vodou/vudΓΊ. If you're Dominican, do you think you can explain typical Dominican attitudes toward Haitian Vodou? How do you or people you know tend to feel about it?
Speak your mind; I'm really just curious. Afro-Caribbean religions get talked about so much with regard to Cuba and Haiti. Why not RD?
how and where do i learn authentic haitian vodou? i'm only 13 and religiously stranded. i've been researching a few religions (for fun and a bit to test my beliefs) and none have made me feel comfortable and warmth like vodou. it's all very interesting to me and it seems it's a mouth to mouth religion, meaning you can only be taught by being talked to, not through a book.
any tips? ~~this is irrelevant but i think i could be a great theologist..~~
I saw a story referenced somewhere online. I was planning to look into it to get more details, but I can't find the reference anymore. In the story, a slave in Haiti used a wanga bag to escape. But then he somehow abuses the wanga bag's power and dies as a result. Is anyone familiar with this story? Thank you.
