Recent diagnosis, goitre, feeling like I'm choking

Hello!

I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. These were the blood results.

T3: 70 ng/dL TSH: >100.00 ulU/mL Free T4: <0.50 ng/dL

The endocrinologist put me on 100mcg Levothyroxine, and told me that I should have a sonogram/ultrasound and further blood test after four weeks.

The next blood test is to be more extensive and will include the following:

T3, TSH, Free T4, Anti-microsome antibody, Anti-thyroglobulin antibody, Admission battery(including kidney function, liver function, uric acid and cholesterol levels)

Am I correct in thinking that they look at antibodies to check the cause of my thyroid issues, so potentially to diagnose Hashimotos?

I'd also like to know about other people's experiences of goitres. The main reason I went for a thyroid panel was because I had visible swelling of the thyroid. It has gotten worse this week, to the point where it constantly feels as if I'm being choked, especially when I'm lying down. It's such an unpleasant feeling and it's giving me anxiety. I keep thinking about the C word. Is it normal to have this feeling? There was no sense of urgency from the endocrinologist, and she didn't actually ask too much about my neck or even bother to inspect it.

Thank you!

Awaiting FNA results, and Multi Nodular Goitre

Hey everyone, This is my first time posting and I’m normally the guy who just scrolls and reads on Reddit.

(26m) I was diagnosed with a multi modular goitre when I was 20. I had an FNA yesterday after 6 years of missed ultrasounds by the NHS and a nodule which now has been found to have calcification after a CT and Ultrasound pushed them to investigate. They don’t seem to have shown any large mass or obstruction, just the nodules of which they’re only concerned about one

Recently I’ve had a feeling of something stuck in my throat that I can’t swallow and some pressure on my throat when lying down.

I’m aware I have MNG but I don’t have any visible enlargement or lumps when looking at my neck. Does anyone else suffer with a goitre like this that still puts pressure on their windpipe without being outwardly visible?

Thanks and good luck to you all!

Thyroid goitre

Hi ive had lump in my neck since march this year ive been diagnosed with a toxic multinodular goitre and they can't exclude cancer as of yet because they haven't even done a biopsy but my gp told me i need to get my thyroid out im really scared of surgery. My anxiety is through the roof and ive been crying etc thinking like what if they stuff up surgery and my voice box etc but don't want to leave it because I also think what if it is cancer and it spreads uhg.. so stressful i also feel like sometimes I can feel the actual lump inside my throat sometimes and it feels like a piece of food is stuck there or a big pill.. dont know if its my anxiety playing mind games on me though. Could I please have some success stories or anyone thats been through the whole process tell me how it went for you and did you feel like you could feel the nodule inside your throat as it got bigger. Thanks sorry my post is all over the place its my first time posting on here.

Diseases of the Thyroid(Goitre, etc) in Somalia

Just making a post to see how common diseases of the thyroid gland is in the somali community abroad and in somalia as well. Although I can't say with absolute certainty because I have no research to back myself up. But it appears that diseases of thyroid is on the rise in Somalia. From the conversations I have had with family as well as random patients I have seen.

So usually there are two classifications of diseases of the thyroid, which is hypothyroidism(less thyroid hormones produced) and hyperthyroidism(more thyroid hormones produced). There are further classifications but it appears hyperthyroidism is more common in somalia(specifically goitre). Usually goitre is caused by excessive iodine intake(i.e in salt) and somali's mostly use the natural salt(I.e sea salt). Maybe well to do Somalis can afford to buy table salt but mostly it is just the natural salt. But what is even more perplexing is that there are people from baadiyaha( countryside ,rural) who come with these diseases. These people usually don't eat anything manufactured or anything store bought. I am actually stumped by this, what could possibly be causing this? I plan if I am capable(In sha Allah) to try and research this but if anyone has any family member who has suffered from this or any further insight, please let me know!

Sub-sternal goitre

I’ve recently been told I’ve got a sub-sternal goitre and that it’s highly recommended I get it removed (I’m not sure how much would be removed yet, I have an appointment in a few weeks, after a CT scan). I’m slightly freaking out about getting part of my body cut out of me, especially because my thyroid levels are all fine right now.

Is taking thyroid hormone replacements a big deal? I’ve never had to take regular medication before so this is all new to me. My worry is that I’ll never get it normal and it’ll negatively affect my overall health after the operation. I’m guessing nobody’s really had a sub-sternal goitre shrink back to normal by itself (I’m really not liking the idea of surgery, haha, I’d rather it just disappear on its own!)

I think I just need calming down, I tend to overthink things... I’ll be asking the doctor these things too but wanted to ask people who have been through all of this. Thanks!

Benefit/risk to CT scan w multinodular goitre?

F 43 180 lbs 5’7 No medications

The reason the CT scan was ordered is I feel like I have a lump in my throat pressing on my windpipe that sometimes makes it hard to breathe.

An Ultrasound found several nodules, TIRADS 3, largest measured 2.2 x 1.5 x1.2 cm, hypoechoic, spongiform, punctate calcifications. Normal lymph nodes. Recommendation was to repeat ultrasound in 1 year. (A 2014 FNA of that same nodule found it benign.)

So I am scared of exposing this thing to more radiation and paradoxically causing a cancer that might not have existed in the first place :/

I did some reading and it seems CT scans show less visual detail than ultrasounds apparently, and they are not reliable for nodule size. A CT scan would also not confirm cancer, only FNA and biopsy would do that.

Would a CT show other structures that might cause this choking feeling?

The endocrinologist who ordered it said the only reason to do the CT would be if I would consider having the nodules removed. I thought yes that day, so they ordered it - but now I feel anxious about the idea of surgery around eg important veins and my vocal cords :/ even the CT scan is making me so anxious i feel nauseous :/

So should I do this CT or no?

Multinodular goitre pressing on windpipe

Ok this was diagnosed visually 10 years ago, confirmed with US, FNA was inconclusive.

Changed docs and didn’t keep up with the follow up (my fault).

My appointment is in 2 weeks. With a GP. Count on the referral taking at least six months.

Currently it’s very uncomfortable, and lying down to sleep compresses things a fair bit. Swallowing is bothersome too. Feels like I’m choking. This is in the past few weeks.

Should I try to see someone else sooner? Walk in clinic?

Edit: standard TSH is normal. I am fatigued but also have insomnia and was recently diagnosed w sleep apnea (although I think it’s really the windpipe issue that’s causing that, now that I think about it. That’s another post.)

anyway I don’t think I have major thyroid-related symptoms. This is just pretty big, I think.

(My aunt was just diagnosed with Graves’ disease though, thought I’d mention that.)

Hashimoto's goitre and stalled weight loss

Hi

Two weeks ago in a routine check-up I noticed a lump in my thyroid .After frantic trip to the hospital , an utrasound and fnac it was ruled to be a hashimoto's colloidal goitre.

My TSH is 3.19 mcg/dl ( normal range 0.4-4.2) T4 is 7.4 ng/dl (normal range 5.1-14) TPO is 95 IU /ml (less than 34) My vitamin D3 25OH level are extremely low at less than 3ng/ml.

The doctor started me on 12.5mcg thyroxine with vitamin D and selenium supplements .

I have been overweight ever since I hit puberty , I am 29/F , in last couple of years I went on a keto diet and lost 45pounds.. in January this year I hit a slag and couldn't lose any weight ever since . I am still 25 pounds overweight .

As far as hypothyroid symptoms go I don't have any except for the multinodular goitre and occasional chills.

My doctor is recommending me to go off of keto , but I am really happy with the diet and the effect it has on my body . I have tried Paleo but it's difficult to adapt to it right now .In general not eating gluten has been a blessing in disguise for past two years .

I kind of have this feeling that if I get my weight in a healthier range my thyroid function would improve so I am not able to decide what to follow . I am traveling a lot due to work and I can't follow the autoimmune Paleo protocol for another two three months .

Should I go off keto ? Should I give up dairy too ( I am pretty sure I do not have a dairy sensitivity , I have gone off it and reintroduced it ) what would help in getting rid of the last 25lbs ? And what diet should I follow for long term thyroid healing ? I am also planning for pregnancy in late 2019 .

Hide goitre by working out neck muscles?

I was diagnosed with Graves 2 years ago and have been off meds for the last year or so since my tsh levels have been normal and pretty stable. I still have a golf ball sized goitre and my endo has told me to not worry about it and that there's no point in having it removed. I'm also quite skinny so was wondering if I started working out my neck muscles/maybe just gained a little more weight overall, could that hide the goitre?

My wife has colloidal goitre; plz guide

Hi, My wife has a right thyroid lobe colloid nodule; glandular vascularity is normal; 17 X 36mm in size, TSH, t4 levels are normal; no symptoms whatsoever; we decided to visit the doc to enquire about the swelling.

The doc explained that this is a benign swelling; he advised FNAC , however, I have a query; by any chance if that swelling is a malignant one, then will the FNAC needle cause the malignant cells to spill over?

Also, Is there a need for FNAC when she doesnt have any symtoms? Only opinion is that it is cosmetic (somewhat), can i defer the FNAC thing till my 1st child is delivered; say 1.5 years from now.

Please advise.

I have had a goitre for 2 years now and its only growing bigger.

I have hashimotos, and a goitre full of nodules, it just keeps getting bigger, its jutting out of my neck, about the size of my fist, and looks absolutely hideous. My endocrinologist and doctor say there is nothing that can be done to shrink it, and i will likely have it for the rest of my life. I just want to talk to other who have this, it's so upsetting, i have people point it out all the time asking me what's wrong with my neck. i'm only 26 and it makes me feel like a deformed monster. :( i feel bad for thinking this but i want one of the nodules to turn cancerous so i can get it removed, i know that's a horrible messed up thing to think since its a cosmetic issue, but i just want it gone and knowing there is nothing i can do about it is very distressing. can anyone here plz tell me im not alone with this.

Goitre, normal thyroid levels, hypo symptoms - I'm so confused!

Hello friends!

Over the past year I've been experiencing multiple symptoms of hypothyroidism (low energy, constantly cold & exhausted, muscle and joint pain, brittle nails, heavier periods, you name it), which runs in my family. My mom is hypo and so are several family members. As well, I started experiencing a burning pain in my lower neck and general swelling and discomfort.

My mom visited a bit ago, and gave me some of her extra levo - I took 50mg for two weeks and felt so much better! I felt energetic, happy, and just generally myself again. It was wonderful. This sealed the deal to take my own test.

I got off the levo (ugh) and waited two weeks for the symptoms to return - which they did - and made the appointment. Doctor noted my symptoms and said I have a visible goiter, so she ran the typical thyroid panel of tests (TSH, T3, T4).

Everything came back normal. :/

The doctor said the next round of testing involves an ultrasound to check the goitre, which I'm definitely going to do, but I wanted to see if someone else has had these same issues and what ended up happening.

I'm so frustrated, confused, and lost - any thoughts would be so helpful!

TL;DR: Have all the hypo symptoms, have a goitre, all tests came back with normal levels, and now I'm getting an ultrasound - what the hell is going on? :(

Multinodular Goitre- suddenly swollen

So I am a 31 year old female, 5'-6", 150lbs (the most I've ever weighed) of British decent, and I have a multi-nodular goitre that appeared when I had a bout of thyroiditis after mononucleosis. It's been 18 months since it initially appeared, and I've had two ultrasounds where it was diagnosed as being stable, nothing to biopsy etc. But this past weekend, my thyroid swelled up again. I've been in a medical search for the past two and a half, three years, since I suffer from chronic pain, fatigue, and number of other symptoms that had me sent to a rheumatologist who suspected I have an autoimmune disease. Once all of his tests came back negative, however, he dropped me. I've since switched family doctors but my records haven't yet been transferred. Regardless, I'm thinking the dots are connecting to point to something like Hashimoto's Thyroiditis - what tests do I ask for to confirm this? I saw another doctor at my GP's office yesterday since my doctor wasn't available, and he just sent me to get my TSH levels checked (which came back relatively normal, 2.49 after being 4.53 6 months ago).

IBS/ Thyroid Goitre

I was told to have IBS since 2014, but I strongly believe it had even started earlier than that. My conditions has gotten worse until I got myself into uncontrollable depression and panic disorder. I left my job last August 2016. And was resting at home looking for solutions as the supplements and medications prescribed by the doctors can no longer works or help much.

It took me almost nine months to search and lookout for solutions. I gotten Thyroid Goitre at 2006. The Specialist told me to go for a removal operation on my right side and due to complications, there might be results in course voice and voiceless after the operation. Worst of all, I will need to go back for another operation for the removal over the left side is there is discovery of cancerous tissues on the right side. No medications was given by the Specialist for my case.

I am so depress as my 3 kidz are still at their preschooling stage. I decided to search high and low from the internet to lookout for successful case. Please be patience with me as I will tell you why that got some links to my IBS attack on later years. (Tips: my goitre is gone after i apply blended watercress on the affected area and wrapped it for a week. Infact the swolleness subside after the 2nd days. You may change into fresh new watercress every other day)

I got very bad constipations that I think it got something causing by the IBS. I had experienced all the following: β€’ Irritable Bowel Syndrom β€’ Blurry Vision β€’ Abdominal Bloating β€’ Shortness of Breath β€’ Gas β€’ Flatulence β€’ GERD β€’ Reflux Disease β€’ Gastroparesis β€’ Headaches β€’ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome β€’ DigestiveDisorder β€’ PanicDisorder β€’ BrainFog β€’ Fatigue β€’ JointPain β€’ Nausea β€’ Leaky Gas β€’ Odor

With lots of trials, I blended a glass of papaya and zero fat milk, and I went to poo alot and my constipation is gone. Immediately, I feel better in my moodswing as the bloatedness is very much reduce. And it gives me joy naturally. (note: green papaya got higher enzymes than the ripe one, I used zero fat milk as I normal fresh milk will cause indigestion to me and worsen my bloatedness. I also take the chinese medicine to curb the sudden attack of depression and anxiety. But it only works occasionally. However, that doesn't mean I have fully recovered.

Summarize: Eliminiate Gluten, Antibiotics. Trust me IBS it something to do with leaky gut/ gas.

Got a multinodular goitre but I'm totally fine. How does that work?

I'm not looking for a diagnosis or advice, but I didn't really know where to ask this.

So as the title says, I have a visible, multinodular goitre but echography & blood tests say that I'm completely healthy. A large portion of the people in my family (both mom and dad side) have the same thing. Both sides of my family come from the same general area, a mountainous region far from the sea and where fish has never been part of the traditional diet (before I moved to a different area, I'd only eat fish like twice a year - and my doctor told me to not use iodized salt).

So, what gives? Is it due to a sort of mutation, an adaptation in populations that should have been suffering from iodine deficiency before iodised salt became a thing? It confuses me that you could have apparent symptoms of a disorder without actually having it.
