The FAA is changing how some planes land in an effort to cut emissions. Isn’t this essentially just using a glide slope? abcnews.go.com/Politics/f…

Getting a taste of flying: glide plane vs hang glider

Hello! I do not have the financial means to pursue powered flight options (at the moment) but still want to enjoy the beauty of soaring - as a hobby, not a career.

I was hoping to get some experienced opinions about unpowered flight options. I would like to start with unpowered options as a sort of gateway drug to build up experience and confirm that this is indeed a hobby I want to pursue. The most appealing options to me are hang gliding and gliding in a plane ("sailplane"?). Paragliding sounds exciting, but there is something about having a winged craft to maneuver that just thrills me more.

In terms of cost, ease of access, enjoyment, knowledge building, etc. what would you recommend for a beginner? Hang gliding or glide plane? Is it reasonable for a hobbyist to own a hang glider or glide plane, or are these usually rented just for the time of flight?

I'm sorry if these are ignorant questions. I'm jazzed about the idea of soaring and just don't know how to break in.

The Antonov A-40 was a Soviet attempt to allow a tank to glide into battle, after being tugged by a motorized aircraft. Amazingly the first test flight was a success, with the pilot smoothly landing the tank-plane and driving it back. However, the idea was found unworkable, and production ceased.
