A list of puns related to "File Shortcut"
I am trying to make a shortcut to a file on my flash drive to a file deep within a folder system on the flash drive. I need a way to make a shortcut to the file without using a drive letter in the shortcut, because I intend to use the drive on multiple computers and the drive letter may not be the same on those computers.
If there is not a way, then is there a way to assign a permanent drive letter to flash drives on all computers it may be plugged into? Without assigning drive letter on each computer it goes in.
(Let's not get into weather this is all a good idea, i just want to do this if it's reasonably possible. I realise i can just use the new disk as normal or transfer stuff manually one-by-one. I'm just too lazy and i just know there is a better way.)
So I decided to replace my 1TB HDD with a 1TB NVMe SSD. So I plopped the SSD into my PC and created a clone of the HDD onto the SSD with Marcium Reflect.
The problem is, that all my programs and stuff is on both drives now, but i didn't want to create a backup, but replace the HDD with SSD as seamlessly as possible. Stuff like my browser still launches from the older disk, not from the new one and same with whortcuts in file explorer and desktop shortcuts. They all still point to the old disk.
Long story short, how do I trick windows into thinking the SSD is the old HDD? I have done something like this already with transfering my OS onto another SSD (standard stuff) but never without OS. I tried the samsung data transfer tool (new disk is a samsung 970Evo), but that didnt work as that only works when the original disk has the OS on it.
Hi, many times at day I have to creae a new empty txt file and I worry if there is some shortcut I could use or any way to create it, the idea is create files just like you create a new folder with F10.
Thanks!
Just to be clear, what I'm looking for is the keyboard shortcut
I never found anything saying this feature was removed. But when I right click any program I don't get a list of recently used files like in Windows 10.
Is it just gone? Is there any setting or third party program to rectify this? It's an awkward topic to google.
Excuse the username
May have asked this before with no response, can't remember.
I'm wanting to use Chrome's "Create Shortcut" option to create a bunch of shortcuts for various sites, that I'd keep in a big organised folder. Because of how many shortcuts I'm thinking of having, I wouldn't want to have to remake all of the shortcuts whenever I moved to a new PC, and so would want the convenience of just copying the folder onto a USB to transfer them to the next PC.
Does that work? Or are the Shortcuts limited to the PC they're created on, and won't work when transferred?
I need to move a shortcut from C:\ to the Desktop, but desktop is stored in OneDrive, so the directory to Desktop doesnβt exist for the batch file. Like for example %USERPROFILE%\OneDrive\Desktop doesnβt work and idk why. But what I discovered is that a shortcut to desktop works, and if I drag and drop files into that shortcut, it actually goes to desktop. So is there a way to sorta βdrag and dropβ a file into a shortcut with a .bat file? Iβm very new to batch files so idk.
Iβm wanting to hide all my desktop program shortcuts in file explorer when I click on Desktop. I really want to just see folders or documents. My old computer was setup this was and it was a way to show less clutter in file explorer. A few of the programs shortcuts are not showing, which I like, however some are still showing up. Is there a way to hide icons/shortcuts by file type?
I have a bunch of M4A files that I'd like in MP3, but I have no way to convert them. Does anyone know of a shortcut that will do it?
Is there a keyboard shortcut to close the file explorer? There's a command bar command to open it but not to close it which is really annoying
Using a vanilla 20.04 LTS
How has it taken me this long to find this shortcut?! I'm a developer and this is so useful. I actually hardly ever use Finder as a result of not being able to see hidden files and turn to the terminal instead. I'm wondering what else I have missed. Post your favorite keyboard shortcuts or tricks!
I recently put all my PS1 games on my computer and theres quite a bit of other files Launchbox is trying to grab when I import. I was thinking of making shortcuts to all the .cue files rather than manually selecting them from within the app (on Windows 10).
Can I do this? And for that matter, could I just make shortcuts for all my roms and have Launchbox save those in the game folder location or am I going to have issues with tracks, etc?
Hi all, i'm a newbie in AppleScript + Shortcuts.
I'd like to know if there is an AppleScript that trims first "n" character from a file name.
Thank you so much
Best Wishes for a new year
I Created a simple shortcut for renaming the files, it's working fine up to 1500 files but not more than that.
But I have an old WhatsUp image backup folder containing more than 25k files where my shortcut is failing even its not work for 1501 files.
Is there any limitation to handling the number of files in shortcuts? If YES, How I can increase that?
Hi guys,
I've switched from S21 Ultra to 13 Pro Max and I'm trying to migrate my whole library of photos / pictures to iOS. I've noticed how great Shortcuts are and how I can use them to convert my older images into HEIF. The issue that I have though is that Shortcuts can't deal with huge amount (30k) of files in a folder at the same time (I'm assuming it's too much to load it into memory). Is there a way to deal with that? Like make Shortcuts work with one file at a time? I've tried for each loop but it still seems to try load all files first before proceeding. I'll be grateful for any help on that subject.
You can pass a file as input to the Shortcuts action βExecute SSH Scriptβ.
What does that look like on the code level?
SSH is usually just a way to log in to a remote shell.
I donβt know how passing referents (variable names, file names) works over SSH.
Is the Shortcut action running some Swift code or something?
Is the file being sent over SSH with its name or just a stream of data, the file contents?
Iβm trying to understand how to capture it at the other end, in Bash.
cat /dev/stdin > filename
has actually been successful - I guess Shortcuts βinputβ gets sent to Bashβs βstdinβ.
Is it possible to send the filename over as well, to capture it on the other end?
Thanks very much
Is there any way to pin a local video file to the home screen to access it as quickly and easily as opening an app?
I have a video file that I need to play all the time, many times throughout the day, I typically either play it through plex or VLC locally on my Shield TV but I'd like to be able to skip the browsing and open the video as soon as possible from the home screen if possible.
Is there any way to make this happen? I know on standard Android devices this is pretty easy to do, if it could be as easy as opening a shortcut to a local file that'd be ideal I suppose.
I really appreciate any advice on this, thank you
EDIT: Starting to feel like just using KODI and setting the video file as a favorite on the front page may be my best bet, haven't given up but after sideloading different apps I haven't been able to get this to work
I have Norton 360 installed on my computer and it updates automatically. The exe to run Norton 360 is called βuistub.exeβ and itβs located in the following directory:
C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine64[##.##]\uistub.exe
Where [##.##] is the current software version.
Every time the software updates, the [##.##] folder name changes to reflect the new software version. This means that the exe fileβs path changes each time the software updates.
I have been using RocketDock to display docked shortcuts on my desktop and every time Norton Updates, it breaks my shortcut because the path to the exe is no longer the same.
Even if I wasnβt using RocketDock and just had the shortcut directly on the desktop, the shortcut breaks because the path has changed.
My question is:
Is there a way to create a shortcut that dynamically updates the path whenever the software updates. Itβs really annoying to have to update the shortcut every time thereβs an update to the software.
Is there vscode keyboard shortcut that gives me the same result as you mouse click the new file icon at the top of your working folder? Ctr+N gives me a new text file I have to rename with my preferred extension double the work. no use why I want a text file? say I want html file or js file mouse click on the new file icon gives me a box to type in the preferred type of my file. that's perfect. Does shortcut mean speedup same thing right? why Microsoft programmers program the Ctr+n shortcut to give me a totally different result than mouse click new file? Isn't that the better way? I am frustrated, waste a hell lot of time searching google without luck finding a shortcut to do this simple task. the mouse click is saving time than this :-) then I see in the file menu another shortcut Cnt+Alt+Windows+N to create so I tried that. it gives me box to type not the same way as a mouse click though it's on the top. finally, another way I thought and type index.html to create a new Html file but nothing happened it vanishing . in that shortcut if you type anything into it and enter then it vanishing but if you just enter blank its creates a default new text file. same result as Ctr+N .
I simply want a keyboard shortcut for this mouse click show on the picture.

It's a shame there's no native option for this, but which is the best (and what are it's other useful features)?
To begin with, I'm a Powershell novice, so my first question will be asking if this is even possible. If it's not with Powershell, maybe it's not with any scripting process.
I have a large directory of files, and within these files are hundreds or maybe thousands of shortcuts to files in other directories. For example:
C:\Users\User1\Desktop\ProjectFiles\Project1
Project1 folder would contain:
This method was likely done with the intention of keeping things organized and/or conserving space. However, I would like to consolidate the data so I can move it to a new location.
I'm wondering if there is a way for a Powershell script to be turned loose on C:\Users\User1\Desktop\ProjectFiles\ that would:
If I'm in the wrong place, please let me know, but I'm really not looking forward to doing this manually, so I'm hoping some scripting/automation can help me out. So far in all my Googling I can find scripts that will change the target location of the target path, like if I was changing the name of a remote server or something, but that isn't what I'm trying to do here.
AFAIK this is a Windows-only option.
When you are watching an on-going TV show or anime, with open directories you have to somehow remember which OD to go to for new episodes. Internet shortcuts are a convenient way to do that. They have content like this:
[InternetShortcut]
URL="https://nyaa.si/?q=%5BSubsPlease%5D+Mushoku+Tensei+%28720p%29&f=0&c=0_0"
The files are named whatever you like, with the extension ".url". I usually name mine "Look for new episodes.url". For an OD, it will just be the page with the show. For torrents, it will be whatever search you would do at the site to get all the episodes for a show, so you can see if there's a new one. The example finds the torrent links for episodes from [SubsPlease] for the anime Mushoku Tensai. The URL leaves out the episode number so all episodes are returned. Search the torrent site; when it returns the results you want, grab the URL and put it in the internet shortcut file. To search for new episodes, just double-click the shortcut.
Internet shortcuts are handy for putting links to related sites in a folder of TV shows or movies, etc., e.g. an IMDB page, a Wikipedia page about the movie series, and so on. The shortcut is like a browser bookmark that lives in the folder.
Here the first image shows what the internet shortcut looks like. In my case, since Chrome is my default browser, it has the Chrome icon with the addition of a little arrow. The ".url" extension is hidden, even though I specify that Windows Explorer always show extensions.
Also shown is the parameters window for the C# code I use to create shortcuts, for inspiration if you want to roll your own. Unfortunately my code is part of a huge collection of utility methods so it's impossible to share. Here's the meat of the code, though. These are my extension methods but the method names are understandable.
f.WriteToEmptyFile(saveFilePath, "[InternetShortcut]");
f.WriteToFile(saveFilePath, $"URL={f.Quote(theURL)}");
f.Quote() surrounds theUrl with double-quotes.
It's easy to create the internet shortcuts manually: just apply the format of the example in a plain text editor like NotePad++ and name the file with the ".url" extension.
I hope this is useful for y'all!
I apologize in advance if this has already been asked. I couldn't find anything searching for what I am looking to do.
I have a folder containing files. I'd like to move them to itemized folders based on the file names, I have that worked out. Where I am running into issues is that I have shortcuts (of directories), that I would like to move files to the destination based on matching of the shortcut name.
Example:
File Name: Silver_Cars.jpg
Shortcut Name: Silver_Cars.lnk
Destination of Shortcut: i:\cars
Based on the file name matching the shortcut name (minus the file extensions) I'd like to move the file to i:\cars, which is the actual destination of the .lnk shortcut.
