> Ficciones is one of Borges’ most famous short story collections, comprising the eight stories in The Garden of Forking Paths and the nine stories in Artifices. Most of the stories in the first section discuss or reference imaginary books - in Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, a man discovers writings on the false country of Uqbar, whose people have discovered the unknown planet of Tlön; the titular novel in the story The Approach to Al-Mu’tasim has a protagonist who is never named seeking a man who has left touches of the divine on the people he has met; The Library of Babel explores the nature of an infinite library containing infinite books. The second section is more abstract, with the narrator in Funes, the Memorius meeting a man with perfect recollection of every memory and dream he has ever experienced, and the protagonist of Death and the Compass investigating a series of murders each revealing the Absolute Name of God.
Each story in Ficciones is fascinating, with literary, historical, philosophical, and religious layers providing depth and richness to his speculative writing. It’s easy for some of the complexity to go over the reader’s head - my general knowledge on these subjects is certainly not enough to have caught every reference on my first read through. Even though I didn’t necessarily have the full context for each story, they are written in such a skillful way that they draw you in and stay with you after finishing. Definitely worth revisiting later after having ruminated for a while - Borges’ writing fully deserves the acclaim.

> This edition of The Arabian Nights consists of 271 nights, based on the text of the 14th century Syrian manuscript. The Persian king Shahrayar, betrayed by the women in his life, swears to marry one woman from among his subjects each night and kill her the next morning as revenge. Clever Shahrazad, daughter of the king’s Vizier, comes up with a plan to save her people - offer herself up to the king, and tell him a story each night, so that he may eagerly await

So I'm wondering what you guys think is the best book of the two and why? And which would you recommend to start with?
Ficciones is a collection of 17 short stories written by Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges. These stories have one thing in common, they are the most impressive stimulation for our mind. Most of these stories will probably left you admiring Borges hability to explore the power of literature, to do so he uses meta fiction, magical realism and an incredible perfection in every word he writes Some of his stories include a man who can remember every single detail of his existence, an infinite library, a society in which luck dominates every event, a critic of an invented novel and more

Look what I found on page 116 of Bluebeard:
"The easternmost house of the three which used to belong to Gregory, I only discovered on this most recent trip to New York, is now the office and dwelling of the Delegation to the United Nations of the Emirate of Salibaar. That was the first I had ever heard of the Emirate of Salibaar, which I can't find anywhere in my Encyclopaedia Britannica. I can only find a desert town by that name, population eleven thousand, about the population of San Ignacio. Circe Berman says it is time I got a new encyclopedia, and some new neckties, too."
As I try to decide between which collection to buy I'm struck by how despite the fact that Ficciones is the most recommended collection, Labyrinths has most of its stories (save for The Approach to Al-Mu'tasim, The End, and The South) and more, including essays. I've already listened to the audiobook for Labyrinths and I'm wondering if it's worth it to explore Ficciones at all.

I particularly like how scholarly and dense these two writers are, as well as their philosophical settings which challenge our very understanding of society, reality and being.

I just picked up this book after reading a lot of positive stuff about it on the internet and I am lost. I am utterly clueless about what is going on in the stories. I have read 6 stories till now with two naps in between because of the imaginary and pedantic ramblings. I would call these rambling digressions, but it seems that most of the stories are only ramblings with a little bit of story thrown here and there. Every once in a while I see Borges' literary genius that everyone else is talking about shine out in a particular line, but it seems like I am missing something.
I liked The Circular Ruins and the Library of Babel; though even these two I understood sparingly. The others just flew over my head. Am I the only one who thinks so? Or am I going about reading Borges the wrong way?
PS: I don't understand what the terms modernist or post-modernist mean and my reaction is similar to the books that are tagged as post-modern or modern. So, is it a genre thing?
I'm just disappointed because I heard so much about this book and I can feel its profundity but not grasp it completely.
I'm reading through these tales of wonder and would like to discuss with someone about the mind blowing concepts that Borges present to us.
Halfway through and my brain is so twisted on this read.
