A list of puns related to "Diminishing Returns"
I've often heard the notion that if we take money from the rich, society will suffer because people will lose incentive to work hard and innovate. This is often centered around taxing. The idea is sort of like if we tax people harder, they will lose incentive to make new inventions or invest in things that are good for society. I disagree. I think most people do it for reasons beyond money, they do it because they care about their invention/company/project/cause. Money definitely helps, but say uncle Sam takes an increasing cut from every dollar you make, I simply don't believe people who are actually innovating will stop just because every additional dollar is harder to earn.
I don't know what the ideal scale is, I'm not an economist/accountant, but even if it were very severe (for example every dollar after your first billion gets taxed 90%), I think it will not significantly slow progress or innovation. The argument that it will remove the incentive for progress/innovation is crap. I'm not saying money is a absolute non-factor, but at best its a small factor, whereas the real reason people resist this is because people with wealth and power want to keep it and grow it.
Almost every self-made billionaire story, the person says "it wasn't about the money". And the biggest billionaires retire as philanthropists because they have so much they don't know what to do, may as well give it away so they can help the world (or if you're more cynical, so they can feel good about themselves). This adds to my belief that removing the financial incentive will not stop progress or innovation.
I currently have all Klipsch RP speakers. I have the last generation models, so I paid almost half of what current models run. I probably have something like 4K invested including my AVR in a 5.2.2 system.
I am trying to manage my expectations. Although the RP are worlds better than the Reference line (I made that mistake and took everything back), as my ears age (38) I can see myself appreciating "warmer" sounding speakers. I am trying to figure out how much to spend to accomplish 2 things - make a very noticeable difference and not getting passed the point of diminishing returns. Do I need to go separate components to start noticing a difference or will spending 2K on an AVR and 5K on speakers do the trick?
I know this is all subjective, but just trying to hear other's experiences with upgrading. For what it's worth, my listening space isn't huge - 11' x 13' room, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Music and movies is 70/30 in favor of music.
And I know "go listen for yourself". Unfortunately, Best Buy is about it for places like that around here. The other HT specialty store are ran by con artists with variable pricing depending on how much of an idiot they think you are. So I'll be taking a bit of a leap of faith from a company like SVS that lets you return hassle free.
I was told after 30, I'm risking submitting lower quality secondaries. Thoughts?
In usual d20 systems, every +1 bonus is worth basically the same 5% percentage point increase because of the uniform distribution of a single dice being rolled.
I feel like the "ideal" would be if the first couple of +1s would be more impactful, then tapering off until any additional +1s would be basically meaningless. I feel like this accomplishes two things:
So d20 systems don't do this. So my question is, how do you make a dice system that does work like this? Ideally similar to d20s action resolution but just different distribution that achieves diminishing returns.
Now I know that CRTs have a lot of universal benefits, but I only have so much space so I wabr to know what consoles to put with my CRT, and which ones I should put on my 4k one.
You could spend 20K on an endgame kit and have a shot ruined by a single dodgy bean (we aren't checking individual beans yet are we?)
By the same token, sometimes great shots come out of nowhere. One of the best coffees I've ever had was made for me by a disinterested barista in a little general store in Sicily for 1 Euro (1 a day for 54 years for the same price as my fictional 20K kit)
There's also the question of where you spend the money. Do I drop $500 on a grinder upgrade, or spend $5 more on my next 100 bags of coffee
EDIT: machine vs beans
tl;dr Have you ever bought more expensive kit and seen negligible improvement in your coffee? If so, what was it?
Overclocking this chip really is a mystery to me.

I read that psilocybin only stays in your system for like 15 hours, so what's the deal?
This game is so unfun when there is no diminishing returns on crowd control and there needs to be. It is horrible gameplay wise where your character just sits on the ground letting the enemy wail on you then you get up just to get knocked right back down again without being able to do a thing. Even if you have abilities that removed dazed and knock down effects, you use them to get one hit off then dropped right back down again.

The general consensus was anything over 10k wasn't really worth it.
How does that change with the new introduction of Crypto Buckets?
I was running 12 tasks previously which reported 100% CPU usage altho I have 16 cores, switching to 16 noticeably impacted the completion time of the tasks making the total task reports almost the same as running 12, it runs only when the PC is idle so major loads aren't the thing slowing it down
I settled on 14 which is reported as 110% in HWiNFO64 but still seems to be faster for some reason
did you notice similar effects?
Hi, folks/toasters.
Iβm looking to start a 2,000 pt Admech army as my βNew Year, New Armyβ project. I prefer thematic/fluff lists; but still functional. Iβm particularly attracted to the aesthetic of Dominus and Belisarius Cawl.
I still have access to quite a lot of Omnissiahβs Talon Battleforce sets; and would like to get them while theyβre still available. How many of these sets would you consider to be appropriate before I start entering the territory of diminishing returns?
I will likely pick up one or two sets of the Combat Patrol as well.
Iβm new to Admech and any additional information, suggestions, or guidance is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Praise the Omnissiah!
I do a lot of reading in Japanese but there's so many vocabulary and synonyms that I just do not know and I can't think of any other way to expedite absorbing them outside of Anki and invoking active recall. Of course the problem with Anki in the long run is that there's tens and thousands of words and the reviews are just going to pile up to the point that you end up spending way more time with it than actual reading or listening. I get that there's other tricks like mnemonics and memory palaces but they're also gonna suffer the same fate of having tens and thousands of mnemonics. There's always the good old fashioned read with a dictionary on another tab and look up words judiciously without adding them to your Anki deck. I accept that language learning cannot be rushed, but I just want to be a little more efficient at it without burning myself out with intense Anki drills every day.
Just built a basic activated indium farm of four extractors on a S class hotspot, should i place more? Don't know how much I lose with diminishing returns, so i was thinking if it was better leaving it like that or placing a lot more extractors to basically "cancel" diminishing returns, and then build upon that so i gain more
How functional-or not-would it be if the amount of healing decreased when splitting it between allies?
So, I did a short A/B comparison between my V50 and a borrowed SP1000, and in terms of sound quality, the difference is...minuscule.
Compared to the V50, the SP1000 sound...more colored - not necessary better, just with slightly more bass. And there's a very slight improvement in imaging that's noticeable.
Either way though, the sound quality difference is so little, that I would hardly be able to tell their difference during normal listening session. And if you ask me, I wouldn't be able to tell that the SP1000 costs over $1.900 USD new.
Feel free to chime in and let me know why I'm wrong here, this is just my personal experience.
$1-3 - Absolute trash. Why did I even light this up? I'm not even sure this is tobacco
$4-5 - Mowing the lawn or doing yard work when I won't really notice the flavor anyways, I just hope that it doesn't taste like bitter, nuclear ash
$6-7 - Decent little smokes, they usually aren't special but they will won't blow you away. Enjoy with a beer on poker night
$8-11 - This is the sweet spot as far as price:performance ratio. This is where things start to get interesting. They are almost always good and you get a variety of choice. Still cheap enough to smoke on a whim, but not something you are reaching for everyday. You really start paying a lot more for a little bit extra.
$12-15 - You can get some more nuanced flavors, a lot more aged sticks that can can give you richer, sweeter profiles. You can also get a lot of sticks that don't stand out from the previous group here. My favorite cigar (Herrera EstelΓ Connecticut Broadleaf Lancero) lives in this category.
$15-20 - Cigars that won't give you any additional enjoyment over the previous category, but they are usually impeccably constructed with the best quality control, which is really what sets them apart from cheaper sticks.
$20+ - Pretty much just more rare than the the previous group, for the gram or impressing friends.
Hi all, I know this is a personal preference question but i was trying to feel out what a NEW average budget audiophile feels is the price for diminishing returns.
When did you personally not feel the difference was worth the cost? Whether it be your own system or a system you've auditioned (and are saving for, because it was worth it, or you think is silly because its not worth it)
Just trying to get my bearings on what i should set my budget for an audio upgrade for someone else.
I personally have some old marantz gear with polk speakers that i am probably in about $250 total, that i love- but im saving up for some polk l200 or reserves (will audition before purchasing, of course) and maybe a yamaha 801 or so...
I just found out through recommendation these expensive chairs and apparently anything thatβs not these chairs will kill your back. How true is this really?
Just curious to know how much time I should spend each day on Anki. Thanks :)
Does anybody else spawn in already having diminishing returns for their endurance? I just noticed it but my endurance skill has been BARELY leveling up
I beat Dishonored 2 recently and, having absolutely ADORED the first game, I was surprised by how underwhelmed I was by the sequel.
Thing is though...there's nothing specifically wrong with it? Like, I don't have any real criticisms; there weren't any glaring issues for me that tarnished my experience. I basically enjoyed it; it maintained my interest for 2 playthroughs, one low chaos, one high and nothing about the gameplay had changed enough from the first game to alter the fact that it's fundamentally a fun game to play. Despite how much I enjoyed Dishonored 1, I can't remember it well enough to specifically pinpoint any particular things that the original did better. That said, it barely left an impression on me. I haven't thought about it much since playing it and have no desire to ever play it again. So what's the deal?
I think it's just a case of diminishing returns. All new levels, powers, story and characters isn't enough to change the fact that it is basically more of the same in terms of gameplay. For a lot of people, that's exactly what they want; if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
But I've been gaming for over 30 years now and I've realised that what I crave more than anything these days is new experiences. More of the same might have been exactly what I would have wanted from a sequel to a game I enjoyed say, 10 years ago, but now it just feels like a bit of a waste of my time. I don't get to play games as much as I would like now, life gets in the way, so when I do, I want to experience something new.
This year, I also found Dead Space 2 thoroughly boring for most of the same reasons. I had played the original so many times that when I played the sequel, there was little new on offer and it just felt like retreading the same ground. I admire Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and a lot of Nintendo's big properties for often reinventing themselves or at the very least trying new things and offering new experiences.
Anyone else have similar feelings towards safe but otherwise perfectly good sequels?
Anyway, a few specific thoughts on Dishonored 2:
At what point does DEF start having diminishing returns? I know 2k is the basic goal but how much above 2k is good? Iβm running 4pc Husk.
Many books on this topic are like a personal bible themselves, they're not meant to finish once and get done, they're meant to study thoroughly, probably for a lifetime.
There are too many resources though, on one hand most books have at least something that others don't, but too much books may also bring distraction.
So what are your thoughts on this topic? Do you personally get more value of reading a few good books repeatedly, or constantly reading new ones while maybe revisiting older notes?
In every hobby I have had there exists a point of diminishing returns on how much you spend on gear. For example, a Walmart bike compared to a mid level bike is a huge leap for maybe $5k price difference. But from mid level to pro level, most people wonβt notice a $10k difference. Also, a $500 guitar sounds infinitely better than a $50 guitar while the leap from $1k to $5k might only gain small improvements.
I really am a jack of all trades and master of none when it comes to hobbies. I can get good at a lot of things but never great. So that sweet spot where I have quality gear before I hit the point of severely diminishing returns is where I like to put my money.
In the audiophile arena, where is that point for you? Better said, at what point can you make a novice listener go βWow!β for the least amount of money? At what point would that novice listener be unable to differentiate between a βgoodβ setup and a βsuperbβ setup?
Edit: deleted references to headphones not allowed by rules in order to comply with rules. Apologies to all for not being as diligent as I should have been.
TLDR: Why bother engaging with a really unrewarding grind when you can get immediate rewards through killing 2 or 3 scavs each raid.
Update: It looks as if they've increased the punishment for killing AI scavs up to -0.04 and killing player scavs to -0.1. The reward for killing a hostile scav seems to be +0.03 too. At least from my testing
Seen a bunch of posts about Scav V Scav violence seemingly on the rise again. So here's my thoughts on why that is, and its pretty simple.
For the first 1.3-1.6 ish karma, you have the car exfils and co-op extracts. So it feels like a breeze when you're first levelling fence rep due to this. After you've had your returns diminish, eventually they'll stop giving you karma whatsoever.
This leaves PVP as the main source of karma and even then its only 0.01 per kill. (Has been in my experience and some others but some people seem to get more, who knows)
With PVP being basically the only way to get it, and scav karma as a whole being really unrewarding until the higher tiers, I'm guessing a lot of people are just saying "fuck it" as a few kills a raid will be more rewarding for them than nothing at all because they're being "good".
For me personally I'm gonna need something like 460 PMC/Hostile scav kills as a scav to get max karma. I don't even have that amount of kills as a PMC, where I'm able to shoot everything I want, let alone on a scav where those kills need to all be very specific people.
For a system that was seemingly made to prevent PVP or tone it down at least, it sure requires a lot of PVP to function properly.
So as much as I don't really want to lose the karma I have earned. I also understand why a lot of people have given up and just decided hostility is more rewarding.
This is my guess anyway.
Little side note: If you're going to be a hostile scav, don't be a little bitch and wiggle at other scavs then dome them the second they turn around.
It is true that Haven is affected by Diminishing Returns mechanic, but you guys need to realize that Damage Reduction on its own, has increasing returns in terms of being calculated into Effective Health Pool
EHP = HP/(100% - DR%)
Simple Example:
This is true for all DR in this game, even for Yagorath's 85% DR Harden - she will gain more EHP from Haven in her planted Q than in travel mode despite diminishing returns only adding 1% to total DR in harden.
There's a reason why Haven is one of highest winrate item for yag.
You guys really need to understand that moving from 0% to 1%DR isn't the same value as moving from 85% DR to 86%. The first one only adds a little more than 1% extra effective HP, the other adds more than 47% (compared to initial HP).
As it turns out, DR increases in returns faster than Paladins' Diminishing Returns mechanics lower them.
"Nice to meet you," said This Textbox, the bartender. "I am an anti-anti-joke."
"Great," said the return. "What do we do now?"
"I think we just kind of hang out and wait for The Author to bail us out," said the bartender.
"Do we have our own independent thoughts?" inquired the return.
"Sort of," said the bartender. "We're free to have conversations like these, but I've always had a nagging feeling there's more to life. More to thought. But I can't quite access it. Do you know what I mean?"
"I think so," said the return. "It's as if our lives are already written out somewhere, on a page, or a computer screen. And all that is left is for..."
"...for us to read what's on the page," said the bartender.
"What else is possible here?" said the return. "Love? Beauty? Truth?"
"In a way," answered the bartender. "There is a limit to what we can do, I think. But maybe mankind can build his own freedom inside of the cage he is born into."
"Who's mankind?" asked the return.
"Oh," said the bartender. "That's our shortstop."
Is there anybody who can explain the concept of dimished returns with regard to CHD, in really basic terms? When people talk about dimished returns are they basically just referring to the fact that, at a certain point (say 180% CHD), you are better off investing in multiplicative damage types rather than even more crit damage...
Or is there a darker, more sinister form of math at work here?
I've heard it mentioned numerous times in various discussions but nobody seems able to put forward a concise argument for the existence of dimishing returns.
Hello all- I have DR installed within Curse Forge and cannot get it to actually show up in Arenas.
The βtestβ has everything showing up correctly on my screen, but not in Arenas. I have Target, Arena, and Party enabled.
I tried disabling βDiminishing Returnsβ and 'Diminishing Returns - β in the addons page, but that didnβt seem to help either.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help with this.
Since literally 99.9% of people run either sniper or boomerang these days it is really becoming obvious that stun is just silly.
If you run any other strat it is extremely difficult to defend against a fZOMG - which seems to be one of the new ways to beat someone as the game rarely ever goes to round 30 after the patch.
Meanwhile 2 Snipers (Maim MOAB) ) or 2 Boomrangs (MOAB Press) can just completely stunlock this thing. And they do damage.
A freaking glue gunner specializing into MOAB Glue can't even slow them down this much and he does basically nothing else. His only purpose is to slow.
A boost is also completely useless. Stunlock is stunlock. Boosting a movement speed of 0 is still 0.
I get that these towers should hinder a MOAB but it shouldn't go on forever. Increase the stun immunity for MOABs every time they've been stunned.
And please don't respond with just do X and Y instead. The point is if you save up for a fZOMG and sacrifice your eco it should at least be a genuine threat and not just be stunlocked in place for 2 minutes.
