Really hate dental work... 4th crown on same tooth & been in extreme pain today.

So back in December my dentist said they wanted to crown off a tooth that was a bit messed up/damaged after it was fixed, after 3 times the perm crown won't fit & been stuck with diff temporary crowns, for a bit, my gums & mouth been kind of aching, I was told that's normal but idk how normal its supposed to feel.

I hate being drugged up on pain meds & really hate having to spend so much per session, I'm starting to dip into my savings I didn't want to, but had to, to pay off co-pay. Next appointment is in 2-3 weeks to test another perm crown, why does the Labs or stuff take so long for permanent crowns? Dentist wants it perfect I believe, but I feel like I'm just wasting money at this point, and starting to get more depressed/frustrated.

Maybe its just something I need to deal with and be an adult, but I just had to let this out somewhere.

kid is reporting tooth pain. state dental. holidays and dentists arent answering. we are going to ER but i dont know how to get this kid through christmas are there really only two places that take state dental?

see above. it looks like a dead tooth not a cavity. hopefully the primary source of pain is an infection and ER will give us antibiotics.

EDIT: it looks like a chipped tooth and i overreacted when i first woke up. the pain is in his actual tooth, not his gums and he screams and cries when hes in real pain and this isnt that degree of pain. the pain also comes and goes. our plan is to rotate childrens pain relief based on dentist advice, avoid all sugars and have him rinse frequently with flouride in order to maybe make a protective layer long enough to get through the weekend

Elderly female, medically fragile, dental pain

My (white) mom is 80 and is very medically fragile. By that I mean that she may die any day. She has multiple issues (cardiac-aortic ulcer, subclavian steal syndrome, multiple heart attacks; diabetes; hypertension). She is about 180lbs and 5'1 and on multiple meds to handle her medical issues and make her a bit stable. She lives with my Dh and myself now but prior to that she spent about 20 years neglecting/ignoring her health, including her dental health.

She has rotten teeth, though no infection at this time (no fever or swelling), and is experiencing a great deal of dental pain. Not surprisingly, no dentist will touch her without an MD signing off on the procedure and no MD will do that because of her very fragile state (we've reached the "every day is a gift" stage of life). She has no family doctor (Ontario, Canada) and her specialist (after he, and another specialist played hot potato with her) has retired.

I've purchased Orajel, Tylenol, Aleve (which I understand she can take with Tylenol), and the dental wax for "capping" one of her broken rotting teeth which seems to help. I've been told that beyond an ER trip for infection, that there is nothing really that can be done, but any suggestions are welcome. Is there anything else that I can do or purchase that might make her more comfortable? Thank you!

Pain between my molars (quite bad when I floss or bite down hard) after getting cavities filled at a very unprofessional dental practice. Should I switch dentists?

Edited to add: I am a mid-twenties female. Drink occasionally, don't smoke, floss daily, seem to have kind of crappy teeth that need fillings every couple years

As I said, I got some fillings almost two weeks ago. In particular between my back two molars, it's quite painful to floss. It feels like what I imagine a nerve would feel like. But it's between some other molars too, on the top and bottom. It's not super consistent except for when I floss, but I had popcorn the other night which really set it off.

This is the first time I've been to the dentist in I want to say 5 years, since I didn't have insurance, and the first time going to this practice. I had a really good experience on my cleaning/xrays, but the dentist who did the fillings was a different guy (he said there were "a lot" of fillings but didn't say how many, just that there were a couple deeper cavities and "a lot" of shallow ones).

The whole process of getting the fillings was SO unprofessional. The person assisting would often leave me to choke on my spit while she was literally distracted watching music videos on the TV, and singing along quite loudly. Sprayed me in the face with the water thing twice, which has never happened to me before at the dentist. Her and the dentist were also flirting quite a bit and she was really rude to the other assistant who got things set up (hygienist? no clue), and both were really uncomfortable to witness.

The above information isn't exactly pertinent to my teeth, but I just feel like it gives a sense of the fact that maybe this practice is a little sketchy, or at least some of the people who work there.

The dentist actually told me, which I've NEVER been told after a filling (and my teeth kind of suck so I've had a number of them), that if I was having any pain I should come back and get things fixed.

Should I trust this guy to fix my teeth? It seems like he may have already really messed up the first time, and it also sounds like he does all the fillings for that practice. My issue is that if I go to another dentist will they be able to see what was done and what the problem is? I would prefer to go somewhere else after my general bad experience, but not if it could mess things up further. I've been kind of agonizing over this but hoping this sub can help me decide what to do!

The VA ER can help with dental pain, even if you don't qualify for dental care.

I was reading a locked thread discussing cancelled/delayed appointments, and dental care was brought up. If you have dental pain, but do not qualify for VA dental, the VA will still help with the pain. If you go to the ER, they can prescribe pain killers, but perhaps more importantly, they can prescribe antibiotics. If you have a painful tooth, much of the pain may be caused by an infection (abscess). The right antibiotics can clear up an infection very quickly which will alleviate some of the pain.

This is very useful if you use a civilian dentist, but they are unable to get you in quickly for an appointment. I had this happen recently where I had an infected tooth on a weekend, and my dentist couldn't see me for a few days. I went to the VA ER. I didn't even have to go back to the exam rooms. As soon as I told the nurse what was wrong, a doctor came out, asked me a few questions, and gave me an Rx. By the time I saw my dentist, the infection was cleared up.

Pain months after dental implant placed but no explainable cause so far?

Hi there,

I got a dental implant put in on 9/1 this year so about 3 months ago now. I needed one as I was born with a baby tooth (a lower left molar) that had no adult tooth underneath it. This tooth became infected over the summer and was extracted. After a healing period the implant was placed. The implant was also done with a bone graft. The crown and abutment have not been placed, I only have the titanium post in my mouth currently.

I followed all aftercare procedures for the two weeks following the implant placement, it seemed to heal fine. I had little to no pain after the procedure itself, more just annoying and weird with stiches in my mouth.

Maybe a month after the procedure I started to notice I was getting pangs in the implant area that would come and go. Some days it would be more intense and then subside quickly (usually after eating or drinking, but sometimes for no reason at all) and other days it would be a constant dull ache. Other days there would be nothing at all. I would say it happens most often after eating or drinking though.

It went on long enough I saw the surgeon again to have it checked. He took an x ray of the area and said it looks fine and seemed confused. He gave antibiotics and steroids just in case which I have taken the round of but am still experiencing the same sensation.

I have an appointment for another check in a couple days and I am wondering any additional advice or just what this might/could be. He mentioned nerve inflammation - I have looked up some things about the possibility of nerve damage but would this have appeared on the x-ray? The pain is not so bad that its significantly interfering with my life, but its definitely there and it's not making sense to me that its happening and that the surgeon cannot identify a cause. I am open to seeing someone else but I am mostly just curious in the mean time what this could be.

Referred dental pain - scared

Hello,

I will start by saying I am very anxious and scared, and appreciate anyone's help.

Male 28, 6ft 220Lbs, non-smoker

I have had a hot burning/pins and needle sensation on my left face (around eye/eyebrow/forehead/lip) (comes and goes, intensity varies) for 3-4 weeks. GP thought it was trigeminal neuralgia and put me on carbamazepine (thus the anxiety).

Subsequently an endodontist diagnosed me with irreversible pulpitis/pulp necrosis of the 1st left upper molar. I had a root canal done 3 days ago but the facial pain persists.

Is my story normal, will my pain possibly go away, how long does referred pain last?

I am just so tired of the pain and so scared it will never end.

Thanks for anyone who can take the time to help.

Jaw pain after dental work

I just went to see if anyone here has had something similar.

TLDR : I had dental work and was in a lot of pain. Dentist first said I was clenching at night. Next day changed his tune to joint paint.

Last Wednesday I had a filling done. Since the filling my jaw, face, and tooth have been in a ton of pain. I called my dentist on Monday and I went in to see if something was wrong with the filling. Luckily per the X-ray the filling still looked good. My dentist look at my mouth for maybe 60 seconds and starts going off and how I clench at night and I need a mouth guard. Okay I get a temporary one. That night and the next day the pain was worse and I call back and told him how I know I am a mouth breather (breathing through my nose makes me feel like I am suffocating). He immediately changes his tune and says it must be joint pain I am going to prescribe you steroids.

I called my rheumatologist at that point to check in with her. She is okay with me taking the medication and said a flair up isn’t unusual after dental work. I was able to pick up the meds last night and I was willing to sacrifice sleep to be able to start the steroids and my pain is almost gone. My jaw still aches some but nothing too bad.

Edit: After 3 weeks in constant pain, I went to my old dentist for a second opinion. He took X-rays and said it looks like the filling didn’t bond to my tooth. He was able to redo the filling same day (yay). After some angry nerves that didn’t want to wake up after the numbing, I am pain free. Some sensitivity to cold but I think that is normal after a filling. It hasn’t yet been 24 hours but I am hopeful that this is the fix.

I finally scheduled a second opinion because the original surgeon is saying I should get a crown, but wouldn’t the crown make it worse? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Dental pain after cavity fillings

I had 6 cavities filled two weeks ago and I'm having more pain now then I did before the fillings. During the fillings, they had to inject me with the numbing agent at least 8 times, I lost count, because throughout the process I kept being able to feel the drill and it was extremely painful. The dentist said it must be because I have some Irish gene, but this has never happened to me before. Online it said that anxiety could cause novacaine to not work and I know I was really anxious, I was shaking.

Now I'm taking a ton of aspirin throughout the day and I figured the pain would go away but it's not, and I'm afraid to go back to that dentist, they were very nice but I think they must have done something wrong. I don't know who to go to, and I have Medicaid so there's not a lot of dentists I can see. I had to drive two hours just to see this one.

Edit: I'm 35F, I rarely drink, don't smoke, but I do have GERD, and I know that it has harmed my teeth. It's also the reason I can't keep taking 2-3,000mg of aspirin a day.

mild discomfort with perm dental crown after 2 months, pain when tapping it?

hello! i've had a permanent dental crown fitted around 2 months ago and had a root canal treatment done before that. the whole procedure happened in around 2 weeks as i was leaving the country for a while and so my dentist put me on the urgent list.

i had the bite readjusted once and it's been okay, other than when i tap on it, there's some slight discomfort. another thing i've noticed, bit of a tmi, is that i'm hyperaware of it being there when i'm PMS-ing as in i can feel it there and feel slight pressure when i bite / clench my jaw (do this a lot bc i get quite stressed / anxious esp during pms but there doesn't seem to be a crack on the crown or anything of that sort, no excruciating pain) and sometimes feel pain when biting down on hard food during that time, but it goes back to normal after that period is over.

it worries me that there's some discomfort when i tap on it and i imagine the pain and discomfort could during pms could just be due to the heightened sensitivity during that period, but i'm concerned that it's actually a problem that i'm not aware of? or could it be that because i went through the whole process so quickly, my gums and tooth are still healing and adjusting to the rapid change they underwent? am i overthinking this perhaps? all the articles say that there shouldn't be any pain after 2 weeks of the procedure but nothing mentions mild discomfort...

thanks in advance for any helpful insight
