Daemonologie: A Field Guide for the Devil’s Dice

Daemonologie is an upcoming tabletop role-playing game using a uniquely bastardised d6 dicepool system and set against the age of hysterical witch hunts in Jacobean England. It's a high magic, planar crossing, alternate history of malicious devilry, furious tension, and relentless campery. You play anti-establishment Inquisitors, racing against the rising public fear to catch the servants of the Devil before the King's forces start executing the innocent.

Two of us have been writing this over the course of the last two years, playing it privately for over a year now. We've reached the point where we want to share it with the world and so our first step to doing this is releasing the basic ruleset in print form as a part of Zine Quest. It will be available as a PDF for free, but this is a unique chance to have the physical copy and extra content from the full game.

We're both new to taking about our game, so if you have any questions about how the system will work then please do ask! Our inspirations for the system are wide, but primarily a mix of Powered by the Apocalypse games and Burning Wheel. We consider ourselves to be a new school revolution game, quick to learn for new players with rewarding advancement for continued play and a rich lore to fully dive into. It's strongly narrative driven with a framework of rules that structure specific moments, mostly to maintain the game's flow - we almost never get bogged down in ruling moments (and not for a lack of forgetting them).

Combat is a part of the game, but it is overwhelmingly about investigation and unravelling mysteries, while trying to keep a low profile and manage the rising level of local hysteria. There are 9 professions in the game, working more like classes than playbooks, with narratively rich powers that draw on a wide pool of European folklore and theology.

There's a bunch of cool mechanics that have been proved to be rigorously fun in playtesting. For example, 6s are failed dice unless a Devil's Bargain is taken, making you roll 2d6 (d66) on a table of ridiculous to dangerous random occurences. The inspiration for this is the Perils of the Warp from the Warhammer 40K TTRPGs.

It is a labour of love on our part and we've been working with some wonderful artists to help us realise it. [This kickstarter](https://www.kicksta

Daemonologie, an alternate history tabletop game based on pan-European folklore

Daemonologie: a parlour game of most excellent quality with full directions in a handsome book.

Daemonologie is an uncoming alternate history tabletop RPG where you play secret Inquisitors seeking out the Devil's minions before the crown's forces can start their witch trials.

I wanted to post here because I thought its inspirations from across European folklore, mythology, and early modern theology may be of interest to some.

We have playable characters that use gifts from the Celtic Fae, hermetic early scientific ritualists who work with the powers of angels, and peacekeeping druids who have who can work a wicker man in dire straights.

Our monsters range from the everyday vampire and werewolf, to the obscurer tatzelwurm and vrykolakas, and many of our own design. It's also not a game about running recklessly into combat, but comitting to researchand careful planning, to free creatures from the Devil's influence instead.

We're proud of how it's come along and you can join us on our path towards release, starting on Tuesday on our Kickstarter which you can follow here.

You can also listen to us play the game and talk behind the scenes here, but our episode about monsters is here, and our episode where we talk about Jacobean history is here.

Why is it so hard to find Daemonologie?

I'm going to be visiting Salem, MA in time for Halloween and I'm disappointed and surprised by the fact that I can't seem to find whether or not there's a copy of Daemonologie from the book's first century or so on display anywhere either in Salem or nearby. In fact, when I try to find places where an original is on display, the only one I can find is in London. I just find it so hard to believe though that there's not at least one in Salem, of all places. Am I just not searching correctly? Can anyone tell me whether or not there's one on display anywhere in Salem? Alternatively, is there anywhere else in the States I might see one on display? Thanks!

I was browsing various occult topics on wikipedia when Daemonologie came up. I found a pdf of it in all its glorious olde english and was thoroughly engrossed reading it.

Did any of the other great philosophers, theologians, or monarchs write so much about the occult? If I had to give a scope, would Europe before 1850 work? I'd love to take a look at other works like Daemonologie!

Daemonologie by King James I of England (VI of Scotland) written in 1597.

Not an easy read as it's written in an older style of English, but far from impossible. There are modern English equivalents.

It's basically a dissertation he wrote about the "evils" of what he believed to be witchcraft and magic. He was heavily involved in some witch trials in Scotland.

Demonolatry AMA

Demonolatry is a Pagan faith defined by the worship of "darker" forces such as demons. It's a very personal religion with no real dogma, so nothing I say is universal, but there are some unifying ideas that most of us follow, I will try to specify what's personal and what's common. In my personal opinion, Demonolatry is the origin of the idea of Satanism, as the names of many of our deities have been used in modern media and by movements which use Satanism as a political symbol.

In my community I'm a priestess of the archdemon often known as Satan or Baphomet. I'm of the belief that there is no such thing as an evil spirit, that evil is a human trait and accusations of evil towards gods and spirits such as demons and the Fair Folk are motivated by misplaced fear or poor communication. In my witchcraft practice I specialize primarily in curses, spirit work, and divination.

Ask me anything.

Am I missing any notable Shakespeare-era/Renaissance (1500-1650 AD) literature that I shouldn't go without?

For dawn of humanity to 1,500 AD, see this post.

As mentioned in the previous post, I am embarking on an interesting project. I intend to experience the best art and media humanity has to offer before I die. Namely this is all the highly notable and interesting books, plays, art, music, films, TV shows, and video games. I guess you could call it a bucket list. I've been indexing it chronologically and downloading it to an external hard drive.

The second major chunk of this project after ancient/medieval/classical era literature is the Renaissance, especially in England. Amazingly, the span between 1587-1614 has about as many entries for this project than the dawn of humanity to 1,500. I have naturally included many of Shakespeare's work, as well as a number of well-known works by other playwrights in the same era. But it's very possible that amazing works have slipped through the cracks in my research. Please let me know if you spot anything I've missed that you would consider highly notable, something I wouldn't want to miss:

  • 1508 AmadΓs de Gaula

Daemonologie is an upcoming tabletop role-playing game using a uniquely bastardised d6 dicepool system and set against the age of hysterical witch hunts in Jacobean England. It's a high magic, planar crossing, alternate history of malicious devilry, furious tension, and relentless campery.
