A list of puns related to "Chemical Shift"
I am 20+ years into a career with BS / MS in Chem E, largely having worked in Oil & Gas, R&D, Consulting, and Pulp/Paper in descending order of total years.
The shift into computer science concerns me a bit as all you good talent people are leaving the discipline.
I'm interested in the biggest drivers.
What I've observe so far are the following, not in any order of significance:
I would love to hear if these are common or of other drivers behind the shift into Comp Sci.
Thanks in advance!
I'm being taught about how we determine what chemicals are on stars and planets, and I understand to an extent but my teacher is having a bit of a tough time describing it in a way I understand. I understand that each element burns a certain color, and we use technology to figure out these 'fingerprints'. The trouble I'm having understanding is when it comes to red/blue shift
If we have a star that was made of helium, and we know the 'fingerprint' for helium, how do we determine that if it's shifted on the color spectrum to the left or right. If you grab those spaces and shift them to the right, wouldn't that change the color and make it look like a new element? If we're getting element information from the wavelengths wouldn't adjustimg the scale to the left or right tamper with that? I'm sure I answered my question but it's a hard concept for me to understand and would like help
I am doing my bachelors in Chemical Engineeirng.
I have seen the health and sleep schedule of my relative who works in chemical industry getting seriously messed up.
When I do consider it, it makes really averse to working in shifts.
So can I know what all jobs are there for a chemical engineer that doesn't involve working in shifts and how far is it possible for a fresher to land in such a job
I was asked in an exam why the two protons in beta to the carbonil group aren't showing different chemical shift even if they are diastereotopic. The professor wanted me to draw a tree diagram for their splitting. As the exam went on I forgot about this mistake and never got to ask about it again. Not sure what the answer is. Any ideas?

Often wondered what chemical shift of H2 gas or liquid is?
In my textbook, it writes that a 300MHz NMR will have chemical shift units of 300Hz (I.e. each 1 ppm on the x axis of the NMR is representative of 300Hz). Could someone explain how this conclusion was reached? I've spent way to long trying to figure it out.
I understand that these hydrogens are deshielded. But how exactly so. I guess based on thinking you got ring currents from double bond and you got the carbon bonded to oxygen so that creates a higher magnetic field that hydrogen experiences and more energy needed to shift it from an alpha state to a beta state.
Iβm a chemical engineer with certification in International Business Management. Iβve been working as Innovation Manager in a multinational organization. I have developed immense interest in the field of quantum mechanics/ computing and am looking for some advise on:
Thanks!
I havenβt been able to sleep tonight, but had this epiphany. Every campus and classroom is different, but if we could get the various people that would need to enter to do a mental safety walk through we could make it a safer experience sooner.
We had to notate every potential risk from opening boxes to turning valves to cleaning toilets. If part of our job required being at a desk, we had to do an ergonomic assessment. Every tiny detail had to be notated. As teachers we do this in regards to student learning. The safety coordinator where I worked is married to a teacher, so I may also pick his brain.
After I compile my format and questions Iβll gladly share an editable google file of some kind. What are some questions youβd ask on this document? Wha are concerns you plan to address when we eventually return to our physical classrooms?
Edit: this is more to get multiple perspectives for a risk assessment, not to replace the ones used by admin. Covid is changing a lot of norms, and itβs going to take input from all of us to be best prepared.
Hi all,
Just finished elucidating the structure of a molecule, and need to assign each carbon to their respective peak in the NMR spectrum. Iβve got most of them down except for two, corresponding to shifts of either 31.99 ppm or 39.49 ppm. Itβs between the CH3 or the CH2 adjacent to the hydroxy carbon.
My thinking is Iβll assign the CH3 carbon with the lower chemical shift, since having 3 electron donating Hβs can probably shield better than two Hβs on the CH2. However, Iβve also been toying with the possibility that the electron-donating alkyl chain might provide more shielding than the methyl.
Note that a possible answer might be that itβs too close to assign shifts for these carbons.
Thanks!!
Not sure this is right place to post this. It probably isnβt, but here goes.
So, my boss is opening up my company next week. Limited staff has been here for the past 4 weeks and weβve been taking serious contamination precautions. Face masks and gloves at all times. Changing gloves often. Public transportation to or from the building is prohibited. Offsetting shifts so AM and PM staff are never in the building at the same time.
Iβve been taking on a lot of products outside of my normal department because a lot of out employees are, understandably, unwilling to come to work during this pandemic. Today, she bought a βfogger,β and wants to to walk the the building between between shifts and at the end of the night to disinfect the air. Itβs a Ryobi brand Defender.
I just read the the manual, and it says multiple times throughout it in no uncertain terms that itβs designed for outdoor use only in well ventilated areas. I havenβt spoken to my boss since Iβve read through it, but does anyone have any experience with these devices? Iβm thinking this is something that we shouldnβt be using inside, and I absolutely do not want to be the one using it.
