I'm seeking two obscure references related to Caribbean monk seals for a book I'm writing. They are not online anywhere as far as I've been able to find and as I'm not affiliated with a university, I don't have access to a reference librarian or interlibrary loan system. I very much appreciate any assistance that one of you might be able to provide to getting copies of the following:
- "The West Indian Monk Seal" by CB Lewis in the Natural History Notes of the Natural History Society of Jamaica, 34: 169-172 (1948)
- "On the Bahamas Fisheries" by CR Nesbitt in the Journal for the Bahama Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge. 1836: 126-136 (1836)

I was recently suspended for 3 days for suggesting a negative consequence toward whomever murdered a monk Seal in a shooting incident on Molokai recently. I now see the error of my ways. It was rash and insensitive and I'm too disabled to actually plant anyone in a pineapple field - no matter how angry I may be. I didn't mean it and I truly thank the sane individual who reported/suspended me, thank you for your important work!
I just hope that Molakai takes this matter seriously (something like 7 Monk Seals have been deliberately killed in the past 5 years). There are only a handful of people living on Molakai and I'd imagine that they could effectively suss out who these culprits are and deliver them to the authorities for justice.
As angry as this animal abuse make us, abstract proclamations of revenge are not the solution. They need to be held accountable by their community and, after they are done with them, turn them over to the authorities. We need to hold the authorities and the people of Molakai to account for sorting this out on their own. It is absolutely tragic and disgusting situation.
