The Brazilian Empire abolished the death penalty, extinguished slavery, and gave Brazilians peace, prosperity & individual liberty. Why was it overthrown at its height by the military in favor of a republic?

Brazil seems to have been in a very good place with Emperor Pedro II at the helm in the 19th century. And yet he ended up being overthrown and sent into exile to Europe. He seems to have been almost universally loved in Brazil. A lot of unstability and military/political violence followed.

How is this possible? What led to his exile? What piece of the puzzle am I missing here?

Speculation of the State of the Brazilian Empire

Brazil is a fascinating country in the lore of After the End. Being one of the few pre-event civilizations to have survived, or at the very least somewhat recovered from, the event, there is naturally a lot of questions one might have on in what form this Brazilian Empire might exist in. I don't have answers to those questions, however I do think some answers might be found in the discussion of Brazil's geography.

To begin, we need to recognize two things about Brazil's geography. First is that much of the land Brazil controls today isn't particularly appealing for an aspiring empire. The vast majority of the country is undesirable for preindustrial agriculture methods like those practiced in the medieval ages, the Amazon rainforest which covers much of the northern half of the nation would be extremely difficult to control, and the strip of more heavily inhabited areas which spans Brazil's coast would likely be subject to raids given their proximity to a more wild interior.

More importantly, the second necessary lesson about Brazil is that it is absolutely massive. I want to give massive props to the devs here for adding so many counties and baronies to Brazil, because it really deserves it. The nation is so large that one could almost stuff all of Europe in there. All of Germany, Britain, France, Spain, Poland, Ukraine and Italy. Imagine all of those nations under one country in vanilla CK3. You'd be on your way to a world conquest! This massive size means that although there is a lot of undesirable land in Brazil, the parts that are desirable are absolutely massive as well.

If a Brazilian Empire were to exist in AtE, my guess is that it would inhabit at least some part of the most agriculturally productive parts of the country spanning from the border of modern day Uruguay to the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo. That region is the most suitable for production of crops like wheat, barley, and corn.

It should be mentioned here that there are many parts of the interior of Brazil today which are quite agriculturally productive, as seen with the soy boom in the large region of Brazil known as the Cerrado, a tropical savannah. In fact, the Cerrano is today one of the most productive regions for soy on Earth today. However, much of that agricultural productivity is driven by fertilizers and additives that fix the acidic, nutrient-poor earth for food production. Without such technologies in AtE, the region would likely remain sparsely inhabited and limit
