A napokban kiállt a Pate St. Denis elé egy fiatalember, s a szép őszi napban föl-alá sétálva, mint az utcai árusok, kérdezgette az arra menőket: „Parancsol boche-pénzt, uram? ...” „Olcsón adok boche-pénzt, uram”, kiabálta, „ezer márkát két sous-ért.” És nevetett.
A franciák is nevettek, s vásároltak tőle néhány ezrest. Láttam egy nagyságát, aki valószínűleg az unokái részére vásárolta a papirosokat. A fiatalember a markába is nevetett minden kötésnél, mert a papírka neki nem 2 sous-ba, hanem 0,000 000-ba került. Egy óra felé kisleánykák jöttek ki csapatostól egy közeli iskolából; ezek is megálltak, körülsereglették az árust, s vettek maguknak két barna rézpénzért egy boche-ezrest. A copfjuk a térdüket verte, sikongtak és pontosan tudták, mi ez a pénz, mire jó és honnan való?
Később feltűnt a láthatáron egy rendőr, s a leleményes fiatalember odébbinalt. Kár volt sietnie; a rendőr valószínűleg megmosolyogta volna a jelenetet, s maga is vásárolt volna egy ezrest.
Párizsban szívesen mosolyognak még az emberek.
Szoktak még Németországban mosolyogni az emberek?
Bizonyos, hogy igen; az élet mindennél erősebb esemény, és átveri magát akármilyen papírfalon. Valószínű, hogy sokaknak jó okuk van ott az elégedett mosolyra is, s abban is lesz valami igazság, hogy Németország soha olyan gazdag nem volt, mint most: mikor katonát tartania nem kell, s mikor a német ipar két esztendőn át papírbérben fizette a munkásait s aranypénzben adott túl az áruján. S azon is lehet tűnődni, hogy aznap, mikor Berlinben ötmilliárdot fizettek egy dollárért, a New York Herald fejcsóválva lenyomtatta a kábelhírt a Stinnes-Thyssen-Siemens-csoport amerikai tárgyalásairól, akik 700, írd és mondd: 700 millió dollár ára rézre és gyapjúra alkudnak Kanadában. Föl kell így tételezni, hogy legalább 3 milliárd körül akad még aranymárka a németeknél. Amit nem fordítanak a papírpénz stabilizálására. A német republikánusok négy esztendeje „sieht schwarz, malt rot, lebt golden”.
Arra a gazságra, amit a német nép és a német állam hátán csinált az utolsó hat hónapban tízezer gazember, még nem volt példa a történelemben. Az egymillió svájci frankos vagyonokat „játszva” keresték az emberek – a szónak hűséges értelmében.
Ha van egy kis eszük, most úgy néz ki ott minden, nem fognak fizetni egy vörös rézfillért sem.
A papírmárka-adósságot pár aranymillióval kifizethetik, amikor eszükbe jut. Nem fog károgni utána odahaza senki.

The shooting of protesting and striking workers, culminating in the La Rambla Massacre, the indiscriminate killing of Proletarians to maintain fear, like in the Asturias Baptisms! Could it be your friend rounded up to be drowned in the ocean? Could it be your mother shot by the police next?
