How often do you experience abelism/audism and what phrases do you find unacceptable

For me it's usually when people say are you deaf or are you hard of hearing as an insult and I have only experienced it a couple of times

Examples of Audism

Hello everyone!

I hope you all do not mind me posting here. I am doing a project for a class on audism. So I was wondering if any of you could tell me some examples of audism that you have seen/faced? I am specifically looking into examples of audism in books/movies/TV, but anything would be helpful!

Thank you all so much in advance! I appreciate any feedback at all.

Audism experiences

Hi! I’m a hearing student at EKU and I’m currently learning ASL. For my project, I will be doing research on audism. I would love for you guys to put some of your experiences so I can learn a bit more about audism and possibly put some of the stories into my paper, if that’s okay. You will remain anonymous.

Interviewing Deaf/HoH mainstreamed folks about audism

Hello! So I am an interpreting student right now, and for one of my classes, I have to interview Deaf people about their experiences with audism in a K-12 setting. Before COVID-19 I was planning on going to the building with all the Deaf students and asking if people would be willing to answer a few questions, but now, of course, that's no longer an option, so I thought I'd see if anybody on here would be willing to talk to me. If anybody who is Deaf/HoH and has gone through K-12 education with an interpreter is willing to talk to me about their experiences, please message me! We can video chat or just talk over messages, whatever you're more comfortable with.

This was posted in a feel good subreddit. I tried to explain how it reinforces audism but everyone was just saying that I was just trying to ruin and be upset over a baby getting hearing aide. That I was trying to find a reason to be upset. How can I get throught to them as this is harming the deaf community.

Audism in the Deaf Community

Before I start, here's some info about me: 18yo, CODA/OCODA (only child), living in Germany (hence my grammar mistakes, sorry :')

When I was younger, I felt most comfortable at our Deaf Club. It was a space where language was fluent and personal, different from the busy and impersonal hearing world.

But as I got older, the behaviour from the Deaf people I knew since I was a baby, changed. I felt like they wanted to cast me out, like I suddenly didn't belong to them anymore. It didn't just happen to me, I witnessed it with the other CODAS my age as well.

In the last couple of years I've been to some KODA and CODA conferences and listened to a lot of people talking about having the same experiences about Deaf people unknowingly casting people out that they deem "not deaf enough".

I really hope no one sees this as an attack, that truly is the last thing I want. But I feel like sometimes Deaf people fall into this "audistic" behaviour of unconciously treating people different, according to their level of hearing loss or lack thereof.

Two examples:

  1. When you meet people for the first time in the German Deaf Community, they will ask you right away if you're deaf, HoH or hearing. The first question, regardless if they've seen you sign before or not.

  2. Even if you've talked to them for a while, fully signing mind you, a lot of deaf people will start talking. Yes, I know they don't have ill intend but even after asking them to stop, I've had conversations with a lot of deaf people who refused to, always saying something along the lines of "oh no, it's no big deal".

It just sits sour with me. I see a lot of deaf people (including my parents) having this "us vs. them" mentality, acting as if hearing people are the cause of all of their problems and that they cast them out while doing the exact same thing to CODAS, HoH people who are not deaf enough, HoH people who choose to affiliate with hearing people or deaf people who lost their hearing at some point in their life.

Maybe it's a german thing, maybe it's a Deaf Community thing. How do you feel about this?

I have been HOH 60% since birth and only discovered the word Audism today. I'd like to share some cool links on facebook. The audism pictures online are all a bit aggressive?

I've just been on tour with my band, for the first time. It was great thanks to the kind germans who looked after us but my band members are so harsh about me not being able to hear them. Music is not a problem, but words are. They would roll their eyes and moan if I asked them 'what's up'? if I didn't overhear a conversation that I wasn't part of, across a large hall, and say 'OH GOD do i HAVE to go through it AGAIN'!?...sort of thing. i felt so lonley. I try not to ask anything and have learned a way to just always be behind them and just follow what they do - not knowing what's going on until they do it sort of thing. so I'm going to leave the band, after a year or more of trying really hard. I'm not up for people being mean and grumpy about it. I do my best and I help people whenever I can and don't grump and moan about it. They seem to ignore it as if, some how i should just suddenly hear better. So...now that I found this word, i'm looking around for cool posters or giffs that might show them on facebook that I am proud of my ears, and that we should all make efforts to include everybody.

Discomfort in Class - Audism & Deaf Culture

I'll try to keep this brief.

I'm a second year grad student, and chose an elective that is new for this program. It's crosslisted for Undergrad/Graduate level, and is taught by an auditory verbal therapist. The class was marketed as "Communication for Children with Hearing Loss," which I am highly interested both from a practical viewpoint and as someone who loves the Deaf Culture and American Sign Language. Upon beginning the class, it appears to be a class that is marketing the listening and talking approach. I have looked throughout the syllabus and there appears to be no reference to the benefits of manually signed language. Many of the reading materials are sourced from A.G. Bell sources. I just read the Volta Voices magazine and it seems to be - for lack of a better term - audist propaganda (by that, I mean it places value only in using technology to manufacture hearing to have the child attempt to fit into the hearing world rather than be a part of the Deaf world).

I just keep thinking back to the classes I took with a Deaf instructor, and the modules on the history of eugenics and oralism - that A.G. Bell was behind. I just skimmed through his manifesto on why Deaf people should be kept from marrying each other to pass on their "defects" - and how his push for oralism is intended to keep a "Deaf race" from forming. It really disgusts me. I understand that I have my own biases - being introduced to the Deaf culture before beginning my SLP journey is a big one for me. Removing that all, though, how can we, SLPs who are supposed to be great advocates for (among others) the disability community, use resources from companies who use this man's name?

I suppose my intent for this post is to vent a little, and express my discomfort with the materials and the history behind them. I thought about continuing on with the class, with the intent to learn more to be well informed for all approaches. However, I don't feel that these sources are unbiased. Reading the Volta Voices magazine was incredibly difficult for me. I'm considering dropping the class at this point - and recommending that the program institute a class on Deaf Culture. Does anyone feel a similar way? Can you help me shine some light on the situation - is there something that I'm missing?

The Effortpost About Audism

Audism is the term for discrimination against deaf and hard of hearing people, in particular the belief that the better a deaf person hears or speaks the smarter they are. First, some basic terms.

ASL: American Sign Language. Used mostly in the USA and some parts of Canada, this is only one of the many sign languages used around the world. French Sign Language (or langue des signes française) is its mother. ASL shares about 60% of signs with it.

deaf and Deaf: Lowercase deaf refers to the medical condition, Deaf refers to someone who is culturally Deaf or the culture itself. Eg: "Your baby is deaf" and "My ASL teachers are Deaf."

Total Communication (TC), Oralism, and Bi-Bi: These are all different ways of teaching Deaf people language. TC uses sign to teach Deaf kids how to speak English, Bi-Bi is short for bicultural-bilingual, which teaches kids sign as a first language and English as a second (and it was created by a woman named Marie Jean Philip.) Oralism is not using sign at all and making kids learn how to speak, dammit! It's a very audist practice and is still in use.

To give a better example of audism in practice, let's take the hypothetical case of Lane. Lane is Deaf and was taught using the Bi-Bi method. Lane is better at using ASL but struggles with English a bit because they're more used to sign. ASL is a separate language from English: One of the examples I like to use is that a basic English sentence goes subject-verb-object while ASL's is object-subject-verb. So, Lane sometimes makes mistakes while writing in English but otherwise is a pretty smart person. Lane sees a stupid post complaining about why those damn Deafs won't speak, are they retarded or something?????? Lane manages to keep their cool and reply with a thoughtful post that unfortunately has some grammatical errors. So, all the jump on them about how they must be stupid or something because of all those errors!!!! instead of looking at the content of their post. Lane then says screw it and tells a joke ("A Russian, a Cuban, and a Deaf person and their interpreter get on a train. The Russian throws some vodka out of the train. 'We have so much vodka in Russia we can afford to waste it.' The Cuban throws out his half smoked cigar, 'We have so many fine cigars in Cuba, we can afford to waste them.' The Deaf person throws out their interpreter, signing 'We have so many hearing people in America, we can afford to waste them.'") and then gets banned for insulting th

DAD JOKES ARE NOT DIRTY.

Go post NSFW jokes somewhere else. If I can't tell my kids this joke, then it is not a DAD JOKE.

If you feel it's appropriate to share NSFW jokes with your kids, that's on you. But a real, true dad joke should work for anyone's kid.

Mods... If you exist... Please, stop this madness. Rule #6 should simply not allow NSFW or (wtf) NSFL tags. Also, remember that MINORS browse this subreddit too? Why put that in rule #6, then allow NSFW???

Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.

Thank you,

A Dad.

Dealing with how people disrespect you for having a hard time hearing in front of your partner

I have had a moderate-severe hearing loss since I was a kid. Had a situation where I went out to a bar with my girlfriend for a drink with her friend and her coworkers. One of her coworkers asked me a question and when I misheard him he and her friends boyfriend laughed at me. I let it roll off my shoulder but it actually did hurt my girlfriends feelings.

She asked me why I didn’t just say I was hard of hearing. I explained to her that people generally don’t respect that I’m hard of hearing and directing the attention to my hearing impairment does single me out for more direct forms of disrespect from people. I pointed out as an example of a time where she explained to someone that I was hard of hearing once and they immediately looked directly at me and with exaggeration put their hand behind their ear and shouted, β€œwhat?!!” At me. Usually explaining my situation to people is at the least met with mock empathy. In a lot of ways I feel like I’m being tested on how sensitive I am.

When I was single I had no problem being confrontational over this kind of stuff but friends or other people will then either treat as if I’m being overly sensitive and they definitely are not supportive if I become aggressive. But in a relationship I thought it was going to be better to just not make a big deal out of this weirdness from people to protect her friendship. And it turns out I was wrong.

How do you handle this?
