Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller

BIFF:

Now hear this, Willy, this is me. You know why I had no address for three months? I stole a suit

in Kansas City and I was in jail. I stole myself out of every good job since high school!

And I never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air I could never stand taking

orders from anybody! That’s whose fault it is! It’s goddam time you heard this! I had to be big

boss shot in two weeks, and I’m through with it! Willy! I ran down eleven flights with a pen in

my hand today. And suddenly I stopped, you hear me? And in the middle of that office building,

do you hear this? I stopped in the middle of that building and I saw - the sky. I saw the things

that I love in this world. The work and the food and time to sit and smoke. And I looked at the

pen and said to myself, what the hell am I grabbing this for? Why am I trying to become what I

don’t want to be? What am I doing in an office, making a contemptuous, begging fool of myself,

when all I want is out there, waiting for me the minute I say I know who I am!

All My Sons - Arthur Miller - Setting Analysis

I've been reading All My Sons by Arthur Miller recently, and I've been especially intrigued by the layout of the setting in the play. The main family is nestled between two houses and is constantly infiltrated by their neighbors in conversation. I mean, the neighbors quite literally invite themselves onto the property, sit on their furniture like it's their own... But does anyone have any other ideas on the significance of this layout?

Arthur Miller - The Crucible RELATED TEXTS PLS!!!

Anyone know any texts that are similar to the crucible for analysis?

Was hoping to find something that conveyed the same 'Mass Hysteria' and "Hypocrisy" themes that could be brought back to referencing the cold war and the political commentary that Arthur Miller was making.

I was thinking about doing 'The Lottery' by Shirley Jackson but it didn't have the same mass hysteria theme I was looking for and was more concerned with groupthink and tradition (which are still relevant but I would like more hehe)

Anyone got anything in mind? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Arthur Miller's essay "On Social Play" and how it relates to Nietzsche

Here is a quick summary of the argument made in the essay

As times have gone on, societies have grown wider and wider across the globe. It increasingly became apparent to the elite ruling class that in terms to maintain their power, there ought to be some form of globalization; specifically, that systematic integration of men that atomizes their individuality. However, this was not possible in an age of "tragic and heroic" deeds, which is defined in the questioning of even the most basics of laws and mores. And further, in pursuing an excellence in physical and intellectual facets of life, the tragic hero’s quest then precedes that of the hedonistic pleasure seeker and the comfortable escapist, for to establish a (more) accurate and just law, society needs its tragic outsiders who first dared to ask the taboo questions; how else can a society test and evolve its virtues, but with a shared reflection on its unjust accusations of the past? This tragic hero, who’s innate worth is in his will to push the boundaries of social norms, was then to be melted into a pathetic one; the mission of the machine, atomization of individuals, required men to see only the doomed air that surrounded the life of a tragic hero, and in turns, forget the victories that he brought upon his country’s future. In achieving this, the elite secured the stability of the system, and the people turned into pathetic integers whose ultimate goal in life is the avoidance of pain. And to complicate the matters further, the system’s virtues were hold as religious and sacred, which was another attempt to maximizing the metallic shield of stability that the elite desired; and in completing this, the machine has now successfully turned people into specialized integers who are ignorant to the bigger picture of their condition, and will in their life only focus on their set rule in society, forgetting the value of morality, humanity, and individuality.

Can it be argued that the "tragic hero" that Miller speaks about is actually an analogy for the Übermensch that Nietzsche wrote on?

Arthur Miller - feminist?

Hi all,

I'm currently studying Death of A Salesman and my teacher made the comment that we should not mistake Miller for a proto-feminist, due to his portrayals of women that are reflective of the patriarchy in the 1940s.

My question is, is that not Miller's point?

I interpret the arguable lack of autonomy for Linda and The Woman as an intentional emphasis to this systemic patriarchy, in which women were confined to roles as either sexual accessories or household carers.

I understand that we can read literature in a variety of ways, but I thought that Miller's progressive views were fairly apparent - to the extent that Linda could be used to highlight how women were the necessary foundations for the American Dream and male opportunity (though, again I suppose it could be debated that this is fairly reactionary).

Not entirely sure where I stand on this. Thought it was a fairly interesting talking point, anyone else have any opinions?
