A list of puns related to "Anthology Of American Folk Music"
I would put figures like T-Bone Slim, Franklin Rosemont and Ruth Seeger into this camp as well. Does anyone have any other examples of this? Hope all is well and the songs are good! From Australia
I want to curate as many different modern versions of people playing the songs from the Harry Smith Anthology of American Folk Music. I don't know how to host it or share, or where to start, but e-mail samjessin@gmail.com if you are interested. Everything is free.
I just purchased the re-issue boxset of the anthology of american folk music.
What ridiculous things have you done to add to your vinyl collection?
I've been waiting for someone else to post it that can do a better job. It's been a while since the release so I guess I'll give it a shot.
I'm not sure what can be said about the music that hasn't already been said. Bob Dylan, among others, has said that these are the most important recordings of the 20th century. They were assembled by Harry Smith from a collection of 78s. The songs are genuinely curated and it feels like you're walking through a museum of sound. Here's a link of the details of Harry Smith and the impact the album had on the 50s and 60s folk movement. The 50s and 60s folk movement then went on to shape the USA and music itself through folk rock and rock. All of this is really well documented by people who know much more about it than I do, so to continue, I'll pick a few examples from the set and give details from this specific press.
Foremost, anytime you're dealing with recordings of this age, and folk at that, you have to expect some quality loss. It's sad to think you'll never hear a perfect recording of Robert Johnson but we make due with what we have. I'll say that this pressing is as perfect as can be. Half the new vinyl I get today varies from minor flaws to just shit, but these were well taken care of and pressed on 200g of vinyl. From the photo album, you can see the quality of the packaging. I'm not sure what they would've used as a master in this case, if anyone else knows, I'll add it into the review. I doubt they used original 78s or the original albums so possibly there were magnetic tapes from the original. It was 1952 so i'm not sure if tape was used. Original 78s were used for the sourcing of the albums.
As for the music, THERE'S A LOT. I post a couple of my favorites. The first wasn't on the original anthology but was added in the fourth volume entitled Rhythmic Changes. Cold Iron Bed - Jack Kelly & His South Memphis Jug Band. This Jug band pops up a few times in the compilation. This song immediately caught my ear because it sounds exactly like a 60s replication of the blues. Most songs fit their time frame but this sounds years ahead of it's time. It would fit perfectly into the early Dylan repertoire. The solo and the song structure are what stand out to me. [John the Revelator - Blind Willie Johnson.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
