[Anime] The Endless Eight - How one of anime's most controversial arcs sent its fandom into a tailspin

The Anime in Question

Haruhi Suzumiya is a Japanese light novel series, currently made up of twelve volumes. The first of these came out in 2003, and most of the others released during the early 2000s, to critical acclaim and enormous fandom. For the uninitiated, light novels are kind of like Japan’s take on young adult novels - they’re usually short, conversational in tone, and concern themselves with middle/high school issues. Haruhi was one of the medium’s biggest success stories at the time. As of today, there are well over 20 million copies in circulation.

So what is it about?

Obviously, spoilers ahead. So beware. The books follow Kyon, a new student at a generic high school, who gets dragged into the machinations of the titular Haruhi, whose eccentric and bizarre interests include searching for aliens, espers, and time travellers. She is certain of their existence, despite her consistent failures to find proof. A high school club is set up and named the SOS brigade, to investigate any and all paranormal events. Aside from Kyon and Haruhi, the club soon gains new members, who reveal themselves to be the exact entities Haruhi is seeking - Mikuru Asahina is a time traveller from the future, Yuki Nagato is a human mouthpiece for an incomprehensible alien, and Itsuki Koizumi is an esper able to communicate with spirits, ghosts, and other strange things. They are all the creations of Haruhi, who has the power to manipulate reality, but doesn’t know it. By believing in the supernatural, she causes it to exist. The three entities work with Kyon to contain Haruhi’s power, but their inability to do so is the driving force behind their misadventures.

Inevitably, an anime adaptation was made, slated to debut in Spring 2006. It came at the hands of Kyoto Animation, at the time a new studio with only a few shows under its belt. But today Kyoto Animation is one of anime’s most prestigious and respected studios, responsible for successes such as Clannad, Free, Violet Evergarden, Hyouka, and more. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was an uproarious success, and was arguably what first put Kyoto Animation on the map. The fandom exploded across Japan and took Western weebs by storm. You couldn’t scroll through a single forum without seeing

Anime fandoms need to stop being so defensive

Idk why people/fandoms can't understand that you can like something as a whole, and also acknowledge that it has certain flaws. This is especially common in elitist fanbases of highly critically acclaimed works, or fanbases of works that contain something generally considered problematic (which elicits the defensiveness).

Hunter x Hunter has bad writing and issues at places. Everything doesn't need to be Chimera Ant arc level writing. Alluka is major hindrance to any future writing (basically can solve any conflict instantly), Nen is not properly integrated into their world building, Uvogin vs Kurapika eludes logic at places because somehow Kurapika tanked a direct punch from him (the same guy who busted eardrums from just enhanced yelling) - Restrictions don't increase your defensive nen output. Still a 10/10 for me tho.

Berserk has an obvious rape problem - the paneling in rape scenes is fetishized and the rape itself is overused for shock value. Schierke is sexualized very unnecessarily, at times. I still fucking enjoyed it tho.

Monogatari Series IS an ecchi AND a harem (Doesn't matter if Senjougahara is his true pairing, harem is defined as 3+ people showing romantic/sexual interest in the MC) but fans hate it being labeled so, because those tags are "bad" and they like Monogatari series, so it cannot have bad tags. Don't get me started on Mayoi and Shinobu (and Araragi's creepy interactions with them) - its literally the "but she's actually 9000+ years old in a child's body" meme. But its still deep, the writing is clever af and its a really unique series that I'd recommend to someone who can look past these things.

LoGH is pretentious at times and its political takes aren't anything deeper than what you can get by reading 3 Wikipedia articles. Most of the battles make no sense and rely on deliberate dumb moves made by someone. Every higher up is unrealistically incompetent so that the two MCs can be shown as smart. Speaking of, Yang is one of the worst Mary Sues I've ever seen - even if he's entertaining to watch and relatable af. Regardless, LoGH is still in my top 5 anime (out of 100+) for its amazing world, incredibly complex and vast storyline.

Made in Abyss has some disgusting and unnecessary pedophilic elements. Its not "realism", its a fetish that the author clearly has. It didn't affect the breathtaking story and experience for me, and I still enjoyed it while acknowledging its problem and steering totally clear of the manga. Th

[Anime] This is my first foray into fandom and the internet, and I'm still learning

This is my first foray into fandom and the internet. I've been browsing /r/anime and /r/anime_irl since the show was still airing and I've become more comfortable with it. A lot of the older posts, such as the infamous ones from the last season are still relevant and I can relate to it.

The general rules for this sub are "don't judge someone for their taste" and "give people the benefit of doubt", so I'll try to follow those rules to the best of my ability. I do however have my own preferences in anime and I'm not going to be judgemental about them, so if you don't care what these people like I'm sorry.

For example:

  • Anime is a huge genre that has a lot of anime, and I think it's important to watch and talk about all of them, but I don't think the same people who liked the same things as me have to, and I'm not going to judge them for not liking the same things as me.
  • Anime can be a lot of things but I'm not going to be judgmental about the specific things the anime can be.

I will however still be judgy about the following issues:

  • Being an anime fan or not is very subjective, and people who like the same anime as I do should be able to find one another and talk about it.
  • People who don't like specific anime should not be banned from the group, and people who like specific anime should be allowed to talk about it.
  • It's really weird when someone comes in and says they like an anime and no one else does, because it's a minority opinion.
  • It's really weird when someone says they like the same anime as me and no one else does, because it's a minority opinion.

I've also seen people say that there are a lot of people who post in the wrong categories. They usually are right, but in this case I'm willing to accept that people who post in the wrong categories are a minority. If you want to know what those categories are, please ask.

I do not think in any way that anyone who disagrees with me is automatically a bad person, but they are just as easy to argue with.

I also want to say that I will only be judging the anime that I like, and if you don't like it please tell me why. Also please don't call them gay unless you want to.

If you have any questions about the rules, please ask. I'd like to keep this subreddit as active as possible.

I hope this isn't too long.

Thank you.

Hey guys!

Today I bring you a massive list of RP Ideas that I’m constantly working on. These posts are mainly around anime I’ve watched or games/Fandoms I’m in. However, there is some OC based stuff that might be used either way!

For my replies I only write in first person and the length of my replies vary from a few sentences to a few solid paragraphs depending on how much is going on in a scene. I figured I’d put a fair warning here that if you reply with low detail, I won’t be rping with you. I’m not looking for a few words as a response. While that might be your thing, that's fine and power to you! It’s just not mine.

I’m someone who likes a nice balance of build-up and story to go along with the smut. I’m not the biggest fan of constant sex, or sex that starts within one or two replies. I also like cute dates and moments, and love to type out action driven moments.

What I look for in a partner:

Third Person responses (Unless you're playing an OC among the harem)

Don’t take control of my character at any point. Self explanatory but if you write that he does something or has a reaction to something I didn’t write myself I’m not going to be rping with you.

Active: I don't wanna be waiting a week for a reply. I understand if you're busy outside of RP but please let me know so I'm not just waiting around and twiddling my thumbs. If I go a week without hearing from you at all I'm going to assume you're no longer interested.

Communicative: It kinda links in with the other but if you're not feeling the RP or you're busy IRL I'm not gonna get mad or anything I'm an understanding person! Also we don’t both need to be online to RP I generally go off the idea that we both reply whenever we’re able to and the other will get to it once we’re up for it/online.

Please for the love of god don’t spam me every 5 mins. I’m not ignoring you if I don’t reply, I’m probably busy. And if I just come back to a bunch of spam or keep hearing the notification noise while I’m trying to do something else, it annoys me. As it would anyone I’m sure. Spamming me is a quick way to get blocked.

Detailed responses: Anything just a little less than a paragraph (4+ sentences) is enough, but more is always very much appreciated.

Now to get into the meat and potatoes, I’ll post my kinks and limits. There’s a lot there and not all of them will be applicable to the starters. As I’m a massive fan of harems I’ll put this i

[Anime] Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's: How a fandom created multiple urban legends to justify a quality drop

(Obligatory image for the mobile crowd. Remember, BUY BLACKWINGS.)

I know Yu-Gi-Oh has been a frequent source of drama for this subreddit lately, and this post is absolutely inspired by the recent works of /u/misterbadguy159 covering the card game side of the drama. This post is admittedly more of a compilation than a proper post as many of the sources and claims in this post are going to link back to posts made by /u/misterbadguy159 and others that have long since done the work breaking down the myths covered here today. With that being said:

> Yu-Gi-Oh, King of Recap Games:

For those out of the loop, Yu-Gi-Oh is a manga series written by Kazuki Takahashi that ran from September 14, 1996 to March 8, 2004, totalling 343 chapters. In the story, protagonist Yugi Mutou (Yugi Moto in the localisations) discovers an ancient artifact that contains a dark spirit within who takes residence in Yugi's soul. The spirit takes over whenever Yugi is in danger, challenging criminals and thugs with deadly games of chance wherein he punishes them with ironic punishments. Later on, it's discovered that the spirit is the remnant of an Egyptian Pharoah who lived thousands of years in the past called Atem.

After about seven volumes, Takahashi created a one-off card game called Duel Monsters, which saw immediate popularity with the fans. After it and villain Seto Kaiba were brought back several times, the card game became a reality in 1999, coming to the West in 2002.

After a 1998 anime adaptation by Toei, Studio Gallop, alongside Nihon Ad Systems, would make an anime covering much of the manga following the introduction of Kaiba and the Duel Monsters game (alongside several filler arcs done to either shill new cards or buy Takahashi time to wrap up the current arc in the manga). This series, also known as Duel Monsters, ran from 2000 to 2004, and is nowadays seen as one of the most iconic pieces of children's media for the Late 90s-Early Noughts generation alongside Power Rangers, Digimon and Pokemon. This was helped by an English dub done by 4Kids Entertainment, who made some dubious changes to the source material in their efforts to localise it, but nowadays the dub is seen as a bit ironically iconic due to the wonders of meme culture. Yu-Gi-Oh became a merchandising powerhouse, with all sorts of additional merchandise- tie in games, shirts, board games, and even [anti-weed PSA. ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkGax
